Good to hear. I wouldn't regret anything. I've been geeking out on this Asus TUF VG27AQ and I have to say the the feature in discussion is not a huge deal. I've already noticed ELMB w/gsync affecting different moving objects differently. So, it slightly solves one optical illusion, while possibly making other random optical illusions.

About the micro stutter: just turn to full screen mode instead of borderless window, you can eliminate the micro stuttering. Because in borderless window mode, the GPU has to copy frame buffer to another frame buffer that's bound to the game's window before showing it. That copying could be delayed there's other stuff utilizing GPU at the same time. Just turn to full screen mode, the copying is not needed, thus eliminating the micro stuttering.

I have this, the only negatives I can say about it is, a fair bit of backlight bleed in the bottom corners. If you're not in a dark room though this isn't so noticeable. @soylentgreenb4 жыл бұрын
6:20 that’s not where the benefit is! If your eyes move and the monitor stays illuminated you smear the image over an entire frames’ worth of time. Eyes move vontinuously and display in discrete steps. By flashing the image briefly you get a clear image that follows along ln the retina as an after image. That’s why CRTs have such extremely good motion clarity and LCDs even with BFI are kind of meh. Microled will fix this; extreme brightness for a tiny period of time; then shut off and update the picture and then flash again at extreme brightness. For monolithic microleds as might be used for AR 1 million nits is achievable. Even through semitransparent mirrors and other ineffiicencies you can still have a duty cycle of 1% or less.

backlight strobing reduces motion blur from the persistence of vision phenomenon. basically when your eye tracks an object on screen, your brain will create an illusion of the image and track it even during a still frame while it waits for a new frame to appear on screen.this effect produces motion blur. elmbs inserts a black frame between screen refreshes by turning off the backlight. this forces your brain to get rid of the illusion, reducing motion blur. this motion blur is not the same as the kind of blur you'd get from out of sync frame timings or late pixel transitions. normally, backlight strobing and adaptive sync are mutually exclusive, however elmbs allows for both adaptive sync and backlight strobing to be active at the same time. this just means that they found a way to tie the backlight strobing refresh speed to the refresh rate of the monitor(which is the fps of the gpu due to adaptive sync).

ULMB and ELMB are meaningful *only* when your eyes move or you record monitor with *a moving camera*. If camera is static (e.g. attached on tripod) or you stare at the crosshair without moving your eyes, ULMB and ELMB only introduce flicker without any benefit. For example, sniping in CS GO and tracking the target with mouse, as long as the target stays under the crosshair, there's no benefit for using ULMB or ELMB because you constantly look at the center. However, in close combat situations where the target is moving across the screen faster than you are able to track with mouse, then the difference gets more important. Similarly, in driving simulators, the difference is most important if you look at different locations on display surface while the screen animates. It's those cases where black frame insertion actually reduces the visible blur.

"You'll need a powerful GPU because ELMB and adaptive sync cannot be used between 60 and 165 frames per second" That's a really confusing slip of the tongue. If true this monitor is only good for awful GPUs haha.
@skreph27174 жыл бұрын
I heard ELMB does not work well. I have also learned that when a new device comes out with a new feature it usually isn't great, or you can't use the feature with others to create the experience you wanted.

There is one detail that I didn't quite catch here: At 7:19, you say that both adaptive sync and ELMB don't work if you have less than 165Hz. I don't know about the technical details of the motion-blur reduction, but the point of adaptive sync is to sync your monitors refresh rate to the output frequency of your GPU. So its main purpose is to use it below 165Hz, which contradicts your statement. So, does ELMB work under 165Hz? If not, why not exactly? Does it work above 165Hz?

ELMB sounds like a dream to me: there's a few games where I love capping my framerate at 140 on my 144hz monitor and enable Freesync (I love consistent frame delivery and frametimes and despite my games running at around 180 average, the competitive ones, I choose freesync without extra input lag over unlimited fps and less consistent image during fast turns) but I lose out on my motion blur reduction option, which is pretty decent on my panel. However... from what I've read ELMB still is very prone to flickering in brightness and things like that, whereas my own normal MBR is completely consistent so the flickering isn't visible without a slowmo camera. However... my panel has the issue where MBR is very, very bright instead of more dim than the standard setting. It's Samsung's version which works slightly differently, but to the same visual effect as normal ELMB/ULMB/Lightboost.

I game on an Asus VG248QA with a separate Lightstrobe program running to enable Black Frame Insertion on this model. The app doesn't ways automatically open with Windows 10. I recently forgot to make sure it was on before starting my game. Even at 120fps, I INSTANTLY NOTICED it was blurrier. More accurately, I noticed it was blurry, because with BFI, there is zero blur on this monitor! I don't understand how BFI isn't a hugely sought after feature.

Just bought this monitor. Guys! Don't believe in the hype! It's a great monitor for gaming, but it looks already great with ELMB Sync turned off. When I turn it on, there're very noticable artifacts when watching videos, sometimes even cut scenes in games. It's not even worth the extra effort to switch between on and off depending what I'm doing, because it really makes very little difference. I can reliably get that headshot I want with ELMB Sync off.
@hassanaslam60085 жыл бұрын
I can second that. I exchanged my Asus PG279Q with this one and honestly do not see any difference at all with the exception of the lower price point which saved me about $106.
