Here's to Aunt Eileen gone to Heaven leaving us with the fine memories of a life well lived. Just a wee lass who came to America and made a great life for herself and her family but stayed the girl from Donegal. Rest In Peace Aunt Eileen till we meet again. Say hi to Mom Margie and all the rest for me.

A great song indeed. Not from Donegal myself. My family hail from West Cork which is a very different place altogether. Living in Central America for the past twenty years. My kids speak Spanish and hardly a word of English between them.

Hello there all & as a proud born Donegal Man who left in 1976 & now lives in Wales where I stayed for the lovely Beryl who I lost to God in 2014 after many happy years & I now visit back to my old home in Fanad as often as possible ! This Version of this fine song by Paul a proud Derry Man is the best I have ever heard & I have heard a lot including my excuse of a version of the Same 😄 Well done Paul & My dear Mother Mary was born in your own great City of Derry on Brandywell Road & RIP Mam & Dad & dear Sister Bernadette along with all departed family & Friends.

Long as we lived.

I first listened to this beautiful song sitting in my Grandfathers home in Belfast 18 yrs ago. It touched me so deeply and remains to this day, my favorite Irish song. I traveled to Donegal and stayed there for a few "wild whaling nights". Its hard to describe the feeling this time in my life gave to me. I am so fortunate to have been able to spend so much time in Ireland, a place I consider home. Even with the "Troubles" I never felt so at peace there in Grandfathers house, listening to this.

Completely understand where you are coming from SuperWingman69. Much of my most cherished memories are in the Hills and Mountains of Donegal, Irelands unspoiled County. My mother used to sing this around the house whilst baking bread and feeding the 5,000. I miss her dearly.

The first one to popularize this ballad was a guy called Charlie McGee in the late 50's. It was played almost every Saturday on Radio Eireann ( Irish Radio) in a programme called The Walton Programme ....Paul (I think ) recorded it in the 70's..They used to name the singer.."Charlie McGee and his gay guitar"...

I've just dropped in to see you all I'll only stay awhile I want to hear how you're getting on I want to hear you smile I'm happy to be back again And greet you big and small For there's no place on earth just like The homes of Donegal I long to see your smiling children Standing by the door The kettle boiling on the hearth As I walk up the floor And then to see a welcome free For travellers one and all For your hearts are like your mountains In the homes of Donegal I'd like to stay along with you And while away the night With fairy lore and tales of yore Beside the turf fire bright And then to see laid out for me A shake-down by the wall For there's rest for weary wanderers In the homes of Donegal the time has come for me to go And bid you all adieu For the open highway calls me back To do these things I do But when I'm travelling far away Your friendship I'll recall And please God I'll soon return unto The homes of Donegal Donegal, Pride of all Donegal, Pride of all
