We really need a resurgence of no frills but features people actually care about phones+latest SOC at reasonable prices. You know, the role that the OnePlus One filled originally. It wasn't a perfect phone(no sd, replacable battery), but it did a lot of the things I cared about and cut costs where it made sense. OnePlus has really fallen far since then.

You're just not going to get that bargain phone. I bit the bullet and got Sony Xperia to get those features at full price. It takes demand to get that OnePlus budget flagship kind of device. Too many are more willing to be debtors for SamApple or nab the cheaper Google. The companies have proven people will compromise and pay more for less

Im not over the SD card loss either. Im not gonna stop using my old S9 until the day i either break the screen, or it just dies on its own. Such a good phone and i think it still has at least a year of life left in it.

My S9 Note got "inflated battery syndrome" and split the glass case. I recently replaced it with an S20, and it's still got SD support, but it's in the SIM tray so it's not easily accessible. Not that I'm shuttling gigabytes of data on and off the phone very often, so I really don't care. But it's a solid device and a few hundred cheaper than the flagship models. I specifically got the Note because of the stylus, because my skin is so dry my fingers often don't work correctly with touch-screens - so I have no interest in a phone that doesn't have one.

That was the biggest deal deal breaker for me not upgrading to this phone. Not having an SD card slot. Hopefully they add it again in the future since that was one of the biggest ways they differentiate themselves from Apple and their iPhone. Also I think the "not having enough room" thing for me is BS. I'm Samsung could of found a way if they really wanted to.

I totally agree and understand, but personally, I don't see a reason the average consumer will need more than 128 or 256 with an increasing user base using cloud storage for the important pictures and videos. Of course, there's drawbacks, but I think we're at the point where built in storage is enough for most, at least for now.

Same, S10 and recently got Android 12 and OneUI 4.0. I don't see the OneUI update as being much of an "upgrade", but this will definitely be the last major update we'll get. Which royally sucks, because specs-wise, the S10 is perfect, still has a headphone jack, still has an SD card slot and 4100mAh battery, so I can still use wired 3.5mm headphones w/out a dongle, have a fairly fast 512GB SDXC card for $50 and my battery lasts all day since I don't have to charge wireless earbud case off of my phone's battery. The thing is, if Samsung put the specs of the S22 Ultra into a phone with an SD card and headphone jack, I'd spend the $1200 for the 128GB version, but WTF Samsung?

I mean, the launcher and whatnot are still changeable, but Samsung is one of the few companies still doing cool things with the status bar, settings, or something as GODSEND ERGONOMICALLY GOOD such as keeping right-hand back button nav option... What's really really nice about Samsung is the integration with windows. When I'm working, I practically never touch my phone because I can make and take calls from laptop. I haven't tried it with other android, but the link to windows is already installed on the S10+. It can also copy paste from the laptop to phone and vice versa. Hence I can copy something from the laptop, and when I open my phone and tap paste, boom, you have the text which you copied from the laptop. The integration makes me more efficient since I don't have to reach for my phone every time.

I have a s9+ and I definitely notice the sunlight color shift you're talking about. I think it turn your display to a colder white balance when it detects sun light and back to normal in the shade and makes the colors look better in direct sun light. For me they're the easiest way to move around photos and other data, and keep them safe. I recently bought an iphone for my wife numerous times and was the one responsible for transferring her files over for her. This year, she upgraded to the iphone 14 and when I made the transfer. I said WOW, its that easy any person should be able to do it on his or her own. Apple did mature on this area of data transfer. I just followed the steps, linked her old phone with her new phone via wifi and viola! All her pics, apps and data transferred to her new phone, over the air, seamlessly.

The non expandable storage is a painful deal breaker as a 256gb Note 10 plus owner. Samsung is definitely finding sneaky ways to raise their profit margin with moves like this. I'm happy to see a tech reviewer actually highlight this issue. I also don't know why they are still committed to the curved display on the Note as it effectively takes away usable spen real estate on the sides of the screen. Either way I'm glad to see the Note is back, fingers crossed they bring the SD card back next year.

On one hand as a Note 9 128gb owner, I can say that the storage was more than enough for me, even though while upgrading I'll take at least 256gb version - I've had Note 9 since it's release and still got 23gb available. On the other hand, I like having an option whether should I use 2nd slot for SD card or another SIM. Can't agree about curved display though - I really like both visualy and when holding phone in hands. Indeed, for someone it can be annoying having curved borders while writing with your S pen, but I see those borders as the way of keeping you within the screen AND having visually excelling style. I was also surprised that there are people who dislikes Note's strict corners and monolith build...Well, folks....that's Note. What REALLY bothers me is the lack of 3.5 jack, hate wireless crap.

Having worked in a tech support role in a previous job, the number of times I had to deal with customers in tears due to SD cards full of memories unceremoniously dying for no reason cemented my mindset that they could go the way of the dodo. There are too many good cloud solutions and easy methods of offloading to more reliable storage solutions these days to be dependent on unreliable SD cards.

Just because there are other ways of storing data, doesn't mean that something as fundamental as upgrading internal storage should be removed. SD cards though, for smart phone use, need to just go away. They're unreliable and can cause noticeable phone stability issues. That was another issue I encountered a lot. People that bought dirt cheap ass quality SD cards off amazon then wondering why their phone would slow to a crawl in normal operation. Too many variables and too many better solutions.

The one deficiency of Ultra or Note 9 that my family of four with Note 9's all have happened is the curved bezel display is wicked susceptible to cracking exactly at the apex of the curve even with good case protection. Samsung needs to go to a flat screen design like the S22 plus. If our note 9's didn't have the curved glass they'd all be still working fine regardless of there age.

SO... I bought a POOP ton of S-pens in my day, literally probably have 50 floating around here somewhere as we speak. ANYWAYS... the different color S Pens from the Note 9 and on, had a really cool little easter egg built in. When using the screen off note or whatever they were calling it; you pull out a Red S-Pen the ink would be red. Pull out a Blue S-Pen the ink would be Blue. So on and so forth. Black though would have white ink. Kind of neat little easter egg that I bet not a lot of people knew about. Obviously the S-Pen had to be one of those that you had to charge to use their Air Gesture gimmicks that never worked well on any of the devices I've tried them on, including the current Tab S7 Plus I use to this day.

I've fallen out of love with the Fold too. It's back to the noteish S22 Ultra. I wanted a phone that turned into a tablet, but I ended up with an annoyingly delicate micro tablet that folded into a chonky TV remote. I'm now enjoying apps and content that actually use all of the screen, and it's a solid screen too. It feels like a classic case of technology trying to make a use case but creating more problems than it solved, like 3D TV. I can picture the ideal foldable phone in my mind. It's the same thickness as the s22 ultra, doesn't have a crease, the internal screen is made of magic non existent glass that bends with no curvature radius, and of course the internal and external screens are both 16 x 9 aspect ratios because the laws of physics are altered when the device opens.

Video idea: I'd love a comparison of 3-5 year old smartphones from different brands (each one with the latest available OS). Would be really interesting to compare how each of them has held up in terms of longevity, because that's actually the most important criterion for me when buying a new smartphone. I'm currently looking to upgrade my almost 5 year old LG G6 (R.I.P LG). Even though I love Android's customizability and tinkering headroom, I'm considering switching to iPhone just because of the long software support and the fact that older iPhones don't seem to turn into a stuttering useless paperweight when updating the OS. Longevity is a deciding factor in my opinion, not just because using phones for longer is better for the environment, but it also puts the high upfront cost of an iPhone into perspective and could actually make it a better value option if you get two more years of (pleasurable) use out of it compared to an Android phone.

Just ended up ordering the S22 Ultra the other day to replace my S10+. Had planned on keeping the S10+ for years to come as I'm not one to waste money on the latest phone every year (and I REALLY resent the removal of both the headphone jack and microSD card on these newer phones), but the USB-C port is totally worn out already. It will lose the connection if I just breathe on it, if I can even get it to charge and connect in the first place. So forget about charging in the car. This is the first USB-C device I've owned that I use regularly, and so far USB-C being more durable has definitely not been my experience. Anyway, since Verizon (I think all the major carriers are offering the same deals) was offering $1,000 trade-in value for my S10+, along with selling the next storage size up for the price of the lower size, I figured may as well go all in. This will be my first Note-class phone, and I'm looking forward to it.

I was disappointed that 16GB ram wasn't available (it was an option on the Note) but there is a new feature in Android 12 called "Ram Plus", which is basically a storage-based virtual ram... by default on my Note is sized at 4GB. The S22 models seem to support up tp 16GB. One other thing of interest to me is that Samsung is recreating Apple interoperability by more closely integrating with Windows. Another huge announcement made at the big reveal is that while in the past Samsung guaranteed 2 Android version updates they now support 4 generations of Android and 5 years of security updates. This apparently outdoes Google's update policy and nearly matches Apple.

There isn't a future for the note line lol, at least, not the way it used to be. The reason Samsung never released a Note phone after the Note20 Ultra was because the S22 Ultra and the Note22 Ultra would be fusing together. They were already extremely similar phones and Samsung saw no reason to continue selling both of them, so they took the better design of the two (the Note) and the naming/release time of the S and made them the same phone. If any phone comes out with the Note name after this, I suspect it'll be 100% fold-related, as it makes way more sense for the fold and note to fuse.

no sd card slot = no buy for me. im not paying outrageous increase price for the slightly bigger storage( 256gb instead of 128gb) when for the same cost i can have a 1tb sd card. which i can change out when needed.

@@TheZoenGaming You can of course always change the battery on a phone. But normally most people lack the skill to do so, where a third party repair shop can do it for you

As someone who loves OnePlus you hit it on the money with the software going from perfect to what it is now. This is my planned new phone when my 6t finally is done

Just wished for a 3.5mm jack. Love my BT earbuds for gym and convenience, but wired is still king for enjoying music and chilling. Oh well, adapters aren't expensive. And that video stabilization, damn, actually impressive, even elderly with arthritis can take decent videos now :)

Hey, my S21 is still rocking strong! Debrand skin on it, and some basic case. Dang did I ever drop it a lot already. I love how phones are so rock solid today. And the 6" and aspect ration of the S21 are perfect for me and my hands. I really like how they build on the design and improved it with the S22! Honestly. I like what I see. But I won't switch. S21 gotta hold up at least 3 years.

Thank you for the review Linus. As a note 20 ultra owner, I just may switch to the s22 ultra now. 8oz is half a pound but hell. Us tech guys have perfected muscles in our hands to.... Better hold our phones no matter what weight and still type on a keyboard one handed. Lol

I want a note, I loved my note 4 back in the day, it was fantastic... I just don't think 3x the price of the note 4 on release is justifiable in what I'm getting lol.
