We have our hopes and dreams … of a full and purposeful life, of enduring health, a loving and supportive family, a strong circle of friends.
As we grow older, our dreams become narrower … contentment often focused on security and the place we call home. We reminisce on our achievements and our failures … those moments enriched or distorted by time, and by what is yet still to be done.
There are Places … places of the heart, where we lived our childhood and formative years, a house, a school, a factory, a farm or a city where we built a career. Our memory is sprinkled with recollections of holidays, of growing up, of creating our empire. Eventually though, the fabric of those days begins to crumble … masonry is replaced by weeds, and paint peels like forgotten wrapping paper from the walls of our life. The Paradise we knew now has hazy corners like an antique photograph.
But in a very real sense, the place of the heart remains … some stories we created at 17 are those still etched deeply in our mind at 70. In the end ... Paradise is where you are now … you cannot escape your own life by living another.
“We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.” Pascal Mercier
