yes!! A person's life is not all their own once they bring kids into the world. Unfortunately all I saw was a man who was incredibly selfish to leave his VERY young children & fam he valued so much. He could have died in that bottle-neck going back down. The real Beauty in his life wasnt that awesome view he saw all around him for a few moments but his supportive & loving fam he had back home. It was an expensive thrill. What a priority....He reached the top but I dont value him as any greater, stronger or anything other than being a fool.

This hubris of this guy. He is so self-unaware. He starts his climb by lecturing another climber that “you don’t belong on Everest”. He drones on about his father dying when he was young, but leaves his children for this vanity project. Talks about his abilities, but uses supplemental Os and is fed by his Sherpa above Camp IV. He had to make a phone call from the summit because… well, we all know that guy. Manages to insult the Mountain God. Then he takes a helicopter out of base camp rather than walking out! It would have been perfect if, as Ant was limping down from Camp IV, some climber told him “you don’t belong on this mountain”. What I do give Ant credit for is documenting (and releasing) this series of failures.

Best documentary I’ve ever seen is on Netflix, called Mountain Queen. Lhakpa Sherpa made the Everest summit 10 times and added K2 with that. She even made the summit once with her period. And another summit unknowingly that she was pregnant.

Because most people manage to survive, others think they can do it. Unfortunately they don't. Greedy guides don't care whether their clients know what they are doing or not.

Well... In that kind of situation... if you don't appear to have this "ptsd" that means you have lost your situational awareness that means greater chance of death if you are unlucky. If it's at your local park path someone behave like this, that is PTSD for sure. But somewhere there's dead body around, what would you expect??? This kind of "ptsd" may save your life.

I met a Polish climber during International film festival and he was the fifth climber to do all of the highest mountains of the world . The men was 5’7 maybe 140 pounds nobody could tell he was one of the great climbers until you looked into his eyes of steel. Looks can be very deceiving.

You climbed with Madison Mountaineering…..you were in great hands the whole time. It’s disgusting these first time climbers paying big bucks to get dragged up the hill, causing unnecessary bottlenecks. Nepal government should start vetting climbers. If it’s a money issue, just charge more for licenses….people can get sponsors to help pay if there are less people allowed to climb. I watched Ryan’s video and thought maybe I could summit if I work towards…..after watching your video, they is no way I would try! I was a Marine and hiked with packs a lot, and did strenuous things for many years…..nothing like this. This video had some serious 1996 vibes. No sun glasses? Not very smart dude!

Who knows what motivates people to take risks like that, but did you ever see Flying Wallendas? The whole family takes incredible risks like tightroap walking over Niagara Falls without any saftey nets. What I've read, Mount Everest is a dump of trash and dead bodies. What a lovely site to see. Beauty is hiking to the top of an Adirondack Mt. at the hight of fall when the trees just turned to their full autum colors.

What is the horrible truth part? Watching someone die, or nearly making orphans of your children? Several years ago, I wanted to climb in the Himalaya. A friend who had climbed there talked me out of going. He said the level of risk simply isn't worth it, and I decided he was right. Life is a gift from God, and I don't have the right to be irresponsible with that gift. I still climb, but well within my limit.

Ant Middleton may be one of the guys who attempted to reach the summit of Everest and succeeded in making a safe return home. I hope it's enough to teach him the most difficult lesson possible about life and death. As a married father of young children, he ought to consider his priorities and concentrate on leading a secure, healthy, and fulfilling life rather than taking needless chances like scaling Mount Everest or perhaps the K2.

My former boss was also a (German) special forces officer with several tours in Afghanistan. He's also a mountaineer and has now quit his IT profession to work as a full time mountain guide. He's been on some of the most challenging peaks in the world, including K2. He's hard as a rock, but at the same time incredibly kind and empathetic. I would trust him with my life anytime. But this kind of passion is not for me.

@@markturner977 Yes, well said. Gawd there are some utter tools on here. The sherpas are there to do a job and earn good money. It is an unwritten rule that you cannot help someone else down (even the sherpas were going to cut that guy off), since you can barely keep yourself alive. Also, many people will fly out of base camp due to being weakened, time constraints, for the thrill etc. The climb is done already. Most of the tools on here would never get to experience anything like this in their tiny little lives. Ant has an ego, it is what it is, but he is ex SAS and has done things (saved myriad lives) that majority of people will never do. I think he can be forgiven for having an ego.

I understand both the critics and the decision to climb the mountain. Some feel a deep inner drive that pushes them to conquer, yet in doing so, they risk destroying something essential within themselves. You might call it recklessness, but it's also the urge to follow an inner voice. Of course, we all must weigh when the right moment is for each decision.
