when you don't sleep for an extended period of time, your body or mind will start to adapt to the condition to the point that you no longer need a rest or sleep. i experienced this about more than a decade ago. didn't sleep for 2 weeks until i feel like i don't crave for sleep anymore, then 2 more weeks without sleep and i can start to feel some kind of insanity, like a part of my brain that i could not control. until a doctor forced me to sleep. fortunately, out of many medicines, there's still one medicine that can put me to sleep and took the meds for about a week until i'm back normally. thinking about it now, it was a scary, not because of the experience, but the thought that my mind might be totally destroyed and i might be an insane person right now if not for that doctor who relentlessly forced me to sleep.

it isn't an unknown source, it's a disease caused by prions. prions sometimes can be sporadic (a mutation of one of your proteins, something that everyone has), genetic (a parent with a prion may pass this disease to their child, there is a 50/50 chance) and by eating infected meat of an animal what may cause mad cow disease or CJD in humans, and also consuming human meat, it can cause kuru. prions are always fatal, they have a 100% mortality rate and no one has ever survived a disease like that.

It's nice to see the dangers of fluoroquinolones being shared. I was poisoned by ciprofloxacin almost 4 years ago, after only 2 pills, and still live back at home with my dad unable to work a daily job. I can't even fully pursue most of my hobbies. My tendons were the main target rather than my nervous system like this guy, though I did have a lot of unpleasant neurological effects too, including full-blown panic attacks where I thought I might suffocate to death. But no, I am still alive and dealing with chronic pain/injury, but I am young and slowly healing. I tell everyone I know who gets an infection to STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM FLUOROQUINOLONES. If I was ever on death's door and the only way to possibly survive was to take fluoroquinolones again, I would let myself die.

The new session opener was composed really well! When I saw the title of this video, I'll admit, it was a bit of an eye-roll of, "Yes, yes, we've all heard that so-and-so went so long without sleep, which just isn't feasible in the eyes of science." However, I'm also aware of a few stories of people who have had certain types of brain damage leading them to years without sleep. I'm recalling one case that I barely remember the details of, but if memory serves, it was a man that underwent brain surgery for severe seizures and ended up cured of the seizures, but left with a short-term memory of only 30 seconds, as well as the inability to sleep for the rest of his life, which was decades beyond the point of surgery... so, yeah, I'm giving this video a check for credible and quite possibly real, considering the evidence we've been provided.

I can attest to just how insanely terrifying this likely is. Fuck. In case anyone is curious to look it up further, my clotting disease is called TTP, Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. It's the second autoimmune disease I have of 4. A day in my life looks like worrying about a TTC episode and for my Hashimoto's to give me nodules on my thyroid, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalsia. In case anyone was further curious. some of the information in this video is pretty grossly chosen id say - or possibly just incredibly badly researched. It is nitpicked to sensationalise Ricards struggles. I'd recommend looking into a better video to understand the truth behind this and how unlikely it was that he was correctly estimating his lack of sleep a main thing id like to point out is that tekkit calls the 'disease' FFL and says there is little to no research behind its genealogy. FFI, what he means, is short for fatal *familial* insomnia. Ricard did not have FFI and you cannot develop it from any medication nor conditions. FFI is so uncommon due to the certainty of an early death. It is not redundant and you would know if you or your family had it. I hope you aren't lead to worry any more, and I truly hope your TB goes into remission! wish you all the best :)

This is definitely an interesting situation. Total insomnia is simply a scary thing, and nobody who hasn't experienced it or something like it can even fathom what it is like to go through it, me included. I feel as this is more of an unsolved medical mystery instead of an unsolved KZbin mystery though. The drug he took sounds insanely scary and sounds like it could make the body do something insane like described in the video. Cool video, but I would rather it be covered by a channel that deals with strange medical cases or something like that instead of this one. Good luck in the future Dallas.

It’s crazy how despite it being one of the most vital things to our survival and something that takes up roughly a third of our lives, science still does not understand a lot about sleep. We can examine how it affects the brain and what happens when you don’t get enough of it, but to put it into perspective, the field of anesthesia, basically the practice of putting patients to sleep during surgery, is very much unknown; we know that certain drugs have certain effects, but even some of the drugs that have been used for a long time do not have an explanation for how they work

I have my own very strange story that relates to how he explained his situation (as far as how trying to fall asleep felt.) I had gotten very sick one night, and had to call an ambulance. Extreme nausea/pain. I get to the hospital. They had me on several different meds and nothing would help until like the 5th or 6th try. By then it was maybe 2/3am. I was laying on my side and fell in this weird state that sounds very familiar to how he felt trying to fall asleep. The crazy jerk, and falling. Constantly. And as you lay there you feel absolutely insane and want to die. The level of exhaustion, was literally painful to my head, my soul felt rotten. I don't understand why I randomly one night felt this feeling. But I am so thankful it wasn't more than one night of experiencing this. I luckily did sleep very hard later that next/following day, but it took almost two days. That night at the hospital felt like torture. I can't imagine what this man went through! Weeks... Months.. Theres actually alot of people with extreme insomnia. 😢

I have been dealing with insomnia ever since i was a little kid, having had one really bad phase where i didn't sleep a minute for nearly 2 weeks and currently having a little less severe one which has lasted for over a month. This past month, i've slept on average 2-3 hours a night in 1 hour increments. Luckily with few night where i've been able to sleep for whole 5 hours continiously. Both these cases have already been absolute hell and i can't even imagine how it would feel to have not slept for a year

My theory is that in his family actually had fatal insomnia, but it was so little that it couldn't be seen and the drugs helped the fatal insomnia get stronger really quickly

As I'm listening to him I'm reminding or reminded of a time in my life where I took a drug that I had to go to mental institution in order to get. Granted it didn't work after that but anyways. The thing that was wrong with the drug was that I may have been awake 2 hours at most the rest of the time it would make me sleep. I stopped taking it because of fear that the next time I took the pill I would never wake up again

if this is interesting to you, you should check out the uk tv show shattered. basically the contestants competed to see who could stay awake the longest. it continued to the point of contestants hallucinating and dissociating. crazy and difficult to watch and hard to believe it was ever allowed to air. only one season.

I stayed awake for 36 hours once, and that was horrible. I kept seeing shit out of the corner of my eye and hearing things. I can't imagine how horrible this is.

I have insomnia and it sucks. I feel so horrible for Ricardo if this was what he had because it can make life miserable. That's why I am thankful to have found a medicine to treat mine.
