Fanny was my great great grandmother's niece. I'm not sure what that makes my relationship to her, but I still go and visit the grave in Alton every now then.

The contrast between the innocence of childhood, the incredibly beautiful setting and a murder most horrific is apparent. Thank you for telling the story of this poor little girl.

Thank you for remembering the short life ( and tragic death ) of Fanny Adams . These tales from the Victorian era are truly shocking and disturbing . My heart is pained by her parents subsequent constant grief of their daughters murder . In the gilded age of knowing one's station and all the formal manners required of the age makes this even more shocking . All though not directly connected with Jack the Ripper these incidents do give one a broader insight of the time and its terrible crimes that often went unpunished and undetected . I hope you can continue to upload more of these sobering and insightful taled from the era as I am sure I am not alone in saying that I find them quite hauntingly fascinating. Please keep up all your hard work in researching and production of these dark tales .

No one has a lick of respect for a child murderer. Children are weak and are unable to protect themselves, so we should protect them always.

That was an horrific tragedy! And I thought the Ripper killings were bad. Thank God the perpetrator was brought to justice, although hanging was too good for him! I will remember Sweet Fanny Adams as the innocent child who never got to grow up, rather than a well worn and disrespectful expression..❤

Sounds like Fanny did have a sense of something being off because she didn't want to go with him. He watching those kids play the week before shows it was something he had been thinking about before . He's a monster. Poor little Fanny doesn't know it, but the truth is, she was probably instrumental in saving other little girls from this horrible monster.

The German film M (1931) starring Peter Lorre deals with this subject. It's a film by Fritz Lang, the great German director. Science doesn't know anymore today about it than it did back then.

If this happened today, it would be a shocking crime, even with the social decay and rising crime of modern Britain. Imagine the impact of this in Victorian times, when the country was homogenous, far more peaceful and less violent. RIP, Fanny.
@petebennett3733
@petebennett3733 Жыл бұрын
There were still crimes, people were still going off to wars, there were still various issues and problems at all levels of society and family related problems. Just look at the various punishments for various crimes. Look at the attitudes of people at the top of society towards those lower down the ladder. As for the last part of your comment "...far more peaceful and less violent" that I hate to break it to you but your looking at it through rose tinted glasses.

Do you really think it was safer back then? Crime fluctuates, and it's not even as high now as it was in the 1990s. Really weird reverence of the past.

I’ve read somewhere that the 1874 murder victim Harriet Lane’s name was used in the same way as ‘sweet Fanny Adam’s’. Do you know if there’s any truth in that Mr. Jones?

Hi, Yes, there were accounts in the 1920s and 1930s that suggested it was referring Harriet Lane, there were also suggestions around this time that Fanny Adams was a married woman who was murdered.!

In those days, so many families were intertwined. I descend from the Baker family, and Frederick was a cousin. Though not related to Fanny Adams directly, I am related by marriage to three of her siblings, and also directly to several of the witnesses at the court appearances. This is history you can touch. A personal link to an horrific event, captured in time.

Apparently Minnie and Lizzie ran back to Mrs Warner's home (Minnie's mother) and they told her about witnessing Baker carrying Fanny away. Mrs Warner assumed they were joking and the girls figured that if Mrs Warner wasnt worried, they shouldnt be. Also the girls knew he was called Frederick Baker and they told Mrs Gardiner when she enquired Fanny's whereabouts they had told her Baker had carried her away.

I have a hard time believing that was the first murder Baker had committed. You dont just murder & chop someone up into 20 pieces one day out of the blue.. it would make more sense that he was a sick person who got to that point gradually. It is sick and poor Fanny never deserved that! Rest in Peace Fanny Adam's
