Very well read! It's interesting to me that Lovecraft writes this story in the third person, whereas in Shadow Over Innsmouth he writes in first person. He seems to be identifying with the protagonist at the beginning where he writes that he was a short story writer in Providence, writing stories about the same stuff that Lovecraft himself would write. It seems like in this story he is actually writing about himself.

I thought exactly the same. It totally seemed like he was putting himself in this story and imagining a world where he goes too deep into his own mythology. I really liked this story. The pacing, the setting, all of it came together really well. It’s is probably my favorite story of his that I’ve read so far. I haven’t read The Shadow Over Innsmouth yet, I’d be interested in a first person story from him. I’ve noticed a lot of versions of that one out there, so I’m guessing it’s a pretty good one.
