The BBC started releasing classic Doctor Who on DVD in something like 2001. They're still releasing them today and obviously the logo and overall design of them has changed massively... but every single one has a reversible cover with a design that replicates the original 2001 look on the back. That's the gold-standard for how to approach packaging changes I think.

The funny thing is that this never happened in Europe. Here all the cases have the same logo no matter when the 3ds game was released!

Fun Fact: in europe games after 2017 still have old Nintendo logo on the spine, but they do have the new one on the right-down corner of the box art.

What really annoys me are the random case colors. Afaik Nintendo has done this only on the 3DS, and seemingly at random decided whether a game should get a colored case or not. I'm not a games collector, but my copy of Pokemon Alpha Saphire just sticks out like a sore thumb with it's blue case in between the white cases of Pokemon X and Pokemon Ultra Moon (both games *also* with blue-ish as their "theme" color)

Glad I'm not the only person that has a problem with this. I get that Nintendo wanted red to represent their brand but they should've kept the spines the same but changed the color of the Nintendo logo itself to red on a white background. Yeah it would've stood out a little bit but it would've stood out far less compared to what they actually did.

Newer prints of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS got the updated logo on the spine, as well as the Nintendo logo removed from the bottom right corner of the front cover. So now there’s two variants of the box art.

I remember I preordered Resident Evil Revelations for 3DS. The spine had incorrect spelling and said “Revalaitons” instead.

If they truly needed the red bg then they should've kept the logo the same size and orientation but added a little strip of red with a zig-zag pattern on the title side to blend in better

In europe they didn't change the spine. They only changed the logo at the front bottom right. I just checked my copies of m&l Bowser inside story and superstar saga. (They don't have a red case either)

The 2016 Nintendo logos on the 3DS cases look more like a cardboard sleeve that was only for the bottom of the case (which I personally don’t mind) Alongside each other they look ok, but the majority of peoples 3DS library is pre 2016 so it’ll just look odd

I never owned a 3ds but i used to play Xbox and after being so used to every single game having a unique spine 3ds spines look like the spines GameStop used with their used games that they didn't have covers for

The reason for choosing a generic font from a 3rd party publisher's perspective is money. The fancier font with added color costs a lot more to produce.

I miss the gameboy, gameboy color and gameboy advances boxes. Not the fact they're boxes, the current cases are far better. But the fact those old boxes each had the game logo down the spine plus the console instantly. Even the boxes were different colours. I always wished for a mix between 3ds and gameboy color some day.

Me but with the ps3 spines, they went through like 3 different versions, stylised spine with part of the art, and then white with two different versions of the ps3 logo, lining my games up annoys me because of it lol

You can custom make the covers, considering the cases are small, it should fit on standard letter sizes and you can find the cover images p easily. Just edir out the publishers logo and put the gray one

I think Nintendo is one of the few companies to change their actual corporate logo to represent their console. I don’t know if there any other examples though.

About the red logo part of the 3DS spine. Thats not the case for 3DS. They always used the old logo for all 3DS games. 2011 till New 3DS. All same. Also EU has same white 3DS cases as USA got but slightly thicker. Also for New 3DS, we have black cases that stabds out wayy better coz the New 3DS is a better version and some exclusive games for it.

Covers like this I tend to just do some photo editing work with nice spines and have someone print them. I know it's extra money and can be fairly expensive if you have a lot. However if you want nice looking shelves or have OCD you don't have any other choice.

The fact that only in North America they changed the logo on the side is very weird. In Europe, they still have the grey logo but have the new 2016 one to the bottom right of the box art. Just another reason to become European

I honestly liked the red/white logo on the spine, especially the all red cases. I felt like the red logo just gave the spines more character. I was never a fan of the grey nintendo logo on white background, I sorta just didn't mind it most of the time. (Not a biased review from someone who's favorite color is red)

As somebody with a small collection of 3DS games, I agree. I have all three mainline Fire Emblem games on 3DS, Awakening uses it's logo, Fates uses a generic font, and Echoes goes back to the logo but has the red block of doom. Plus some companies couldn't help themselves. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call has a Moogle sillhouette and Sega 3D Classics Collection has some art on the bottom. And yet it's still better than the one Japanese game in my collection, Puyo Puyo Chronicle, where the rating is on the spine as well!

My solution to this is to just have them sorted by the spine over alphabetical order. I don’t really organize my games in alphabetical order anyways so it doesn’t really bother me.

My pokemon ultra moon doesn't have that, any chance that logo thing is just regional? I mean fire emblem warriors for exmaple had a black box (to signify it as new 3ds only i guess) in europe and it's spine apparently has a normal white nintendo logo on the existing black background and equally miitopia also came with the old grey on white logo apparently

I didn't even know this logo switch happened. Turns out I don't own any first party 3DS games from the time period it was being used. This is similar but not quite as bad as the Genesis case redesign where it went from black to red. Hmmm, red seems to be the official colour of this phenomenon. At least with the 3DS it's just the logo. Any Genesis collection arranged in alphabetical order is a mismatch of black and red spines with completely different fonts and layouts. This also reminds me of when the Simpsons switched their DVD collection packaging to plastic heads of the family members in season six and then were completely caught off guard by fan complaints about the sets no longer matching on the shelf. Do the people that make these decisions not collect anything at all? Is their house full of bare shelves? Surely at some point in their lives they must have observed some set of something with a matching look and thought it looked nice? If you have such little attention to detail regarding how the case looks then why are you in charge of designing the case? If anything the people working on stuff like this should be more observant of these things than customers are.

Was this only a thing in America? I live in Europe and I checked my 3DS collection and all of them have the grey and white Nintendo logo. Even the games Scott showed in this video like Kirby Battle Royale and Samus Returns. But we have colourful trianlges in the corners, which I never unferstood what they mean. Maybe the age rating of the games?

He could have just place those Red Logo cases after his "A to Z" system he set up. He should really shift his perpective to "Okay, so these Red Logo Games were in development as the Nintendo Devs were shifting to Switch Developed, and it's Nintendo's way of pointing it out as a form of Easter eggs.) He should really think of these games as a special "Swan Song/Final Goodbyes" from the 3DS Style of Developers as they shifted to Switch. I often imagine the 3DS devs polishing the final touches to there last 3DS games as either new staff or co-workers are slowing being told learn new skills for Switch, and the 3DS devs are kind of honored to have worked on the last few 3DS Nintendo titles. The Red Logo is an achievement.

Missed opportunity to talk about how the PAL region handled 3DS cases differently. Here the spine stayed always the same,they only updated the Nintendo logo in the front cover for newer games. But still a very entertaining video! Thanks, Scott!

@@arcanusafonso2647 Yeah, I've purchased a used modded new 2ds with a physical copy of WarioWare Gold a year ago... Fittingly enough for a Wario game it was a German region cartridge... Even though it wasn't bought there... But opening up the box wrapped in the original Nintendo-branded film in 2022 and being able to play it in English on a non-German console is pretty rad! Sadly, nowadays with the Switch you can't flex like that anymore that you own a pal copy...
