Welcome to The Horrors Of 2022, a series where throughout the month of October I'll be taking a look at some recent horror-ish movies, and now it's time for Mad God, Phil Tippett's magnum opus stop-motion experimental horror movie that's been 30 years in the making!
If you enjoyed this video or my channel in general and would like to support what I do, you could always take a look over at / horriblereviews

Passion project that is for a niche market. Can’t say it appeals to me but I have mad respect for the amount of work gone into it!

Yeah. Love the visuals, but I see this as a movie to play in the background during a social gathering.

loved this, loved the vibe and animation etc, there's no traditional narrative but there is a method to the madness, it's not all random noise and fury

Glad to see you cover this! Love the channel! I had been eagerly awaiting this movie for like a year or 2 and when i finally saw it i was a bit disappointed - at first (although awed in aspects of its design from the start). For me it was one of those that i had to piece together a narrative for myself after watching it and thinking on it for a few days. I ended up liking it a lot more after letting it marinate. I don't know if what i came up with as far as storyline is what it is technically about but i like the conclusions i came to. So although it wasn't exactly what i expected i really do dig, it surprised me

One ingredient to help with this one is to set aside the beer, and drop some good old fashioned lab-quality hallucinogens.

I'm a big stop motion and horror fan, I love Robert Morgan's surreal videos but I just couldn't get through this movie. Somehow I feel this world would be awesome for a videogame like Dark Souls or something

I feel you, I generally also love and appreciate stop motion animation. I totally respect the art and craftsmanship, but as a whole, the movie just wasn't all that memorable for me...

My dude :) I have enjoyed your reviews for years. I totally still do. But I didn't REALLY understand this movie the first time I watched it. I've seen it five times now, and I keep finding new and interesting twists on this take of assassinating / absolving a God-smoten Sodom and Gomorrah. Watch it a few more times. Like, it's WAY better than Tom Six's trilogy. Also, are you reviewing the new Hellraiser?

It definitely looks really cool, and I've always love the aesthetic of stop motion animation. I as well like a plot with my movies, but some films are just meant to be a visual adventure. I think if the movie inspires a video, it might be worth checking out though. 🍻

Because it's such a visual movie it's a great movie to put on with friends when you know that everyone is gonna be talking the whole time. Some movies are just great for that. I've described movies like this as "background movies" but in a good way.

I have to say I kind of agree with you. I hadn't heard about this movie until a friend on Facebook mentioned it, and i was very intrigued, so i watched it right away. It really looks amazing, I find it hard to fathom how someone can visualise these scenarios, and then bring them to life.. Truly mindblowing visuals. That being said though... I fell asleep after half an hour or so, because I just couldn't grasp onto any kind of story

At first I was a little disappointed that there was not much of a clear narrative (I realized it was gonna be entirely visuals about 10 minutes in) but it definitely grew on me as it went on. Similar to Begotten its just a freaky experimental mood piece, glimpses into a horrible nightmare existence, into another world, that depending on who you ask may or may not mean anything. I for one really vibed with it.
@JohmathanBSwift

I had a friend a good number of years ago, that would incessantly watch Begotten. It was ok, but what I got sick of was him trying to defend its genius merits. For me, Begotten just droned on and on. I don't need to watch 20 minutes of a bunch of Druids walking.

@@WhirlingMusic No i just watched the movie and followed the plot lol, sure its weird and abstract but there is story and characters there, like all the flashbacks with him and his sister. Not a great example of a "plotless" movie.

The main character is hard to care about. It's so alien like, and has no motivation to relate to the audience. Without it being important, the rest is just stop motion thriller, which is more curious to some and not thrilling to most.
