Puce is French for “fleas.” The color is a purple-brown and first became popular in the late 18th century as a way to hide fleas (which were very common at the time). This may explain Drew’s revulsion at the term. He must have been a French maiden in Marie Antoinette’s court in a past life.

I am doing the Diamine Inkvent Calendar (2022) for the first time with the whole family. The granddaughter really gets jazzed to see what's next. We are using dip pens and add a small splash on 82lb laser paper, then let it dry overnight, revealing a wonderful, and sometimes interesting collection of color from just one ink! This experience inspires me to set this as a new tradition for us to look forward too next year as well.

My first fountain pen in 30 years arrived this week and I'm already fangirling over all the different inks you can get now. When I was in school you really only had the choice of red, black, blue/black and blue. I'm already leaning towards turquoise and purples and have fallen in love with Diamine Mystique - such a beautiful colour with all that shimmer happening. I'm obsessed.

I got into FP's under a year ago, and was shocked by the selection, Diamine alone has over 100 colors and those are just the normal line, there's the music line, the shimmers, Pilot has some really nice inks, there's a good selection og american inks, Jinhao has fluorescent Inks, overall it's crazy lol

Ferris Wheel Press Inks are awesome. The only issue is popping off that freshness seal. Remember to save it and to put it inside the cap or the cap will not seal tight enough and leak. Silly me, I didn’t know this and have many leaky bottles! All the best.

I loved hearing about your favorite inks, and a bunch of those are favorites for me as well. De Atramentis Document Black is one I use daily; it dries so fast! Nitrogen is amazing. For those bothered by the smear factor, I think Diamine Jack Frost is an excellent alternative, looks nearly the same to me, dries faster, and smears less. Of course it will still migrate onto every surface in range if a dried drop gets accidentally rewet. For those who love the Organics Studio Nitrogen, their Thoreau Walden Pond Blue is fabulous too, with a more blue-green cast. I would love to see more inks with great chromatography in much darker colors. The lighter ones like Manyo Haha get all the attention, but the really dark ones are better for us artists, who are diluting them with water into washes in our sketchbooks, yet still need to get our darkest darks with them. (You can always make an ink lighter by diluting it, but you can't make it darker!) Sailor Studio 673 is a great example of a darker ink with wonderful chromatography in washes. It's really hard to find swatches of how darker inks behave when added to wet paper, which makes it tough to know what inks/samples to purchase and test drive. I've also enjoyed a bunch of the inks in the Inkvent Green Edition this year. Last year's inks had better chromatography, but there are some this year that have beautiful effects. Like Brian, I like Yule Log quite a bit, as well as Spice Apple, and Olive Swirl. I wish they hadn't included scented inks, but there were only two of those. I'm very grateful to you at Goulet pens for all the information you share and the joy of Pencasts! Happy Holidays!

This is the first year I received the Diamine advent calendar. I've only tried a few so far because I only have so many pens, but Bliss and Solar Storm are fantastic! Spruce is the only scented one I've tried so far. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the scented inks, but this calendar has been an absolute joy to open and experience!

I came so close to buying the inkvent, but buy the time I knew I could afford it, yall had sold out. This was my first year with fountain pens, and I doubt I'll ever go back. You guys have been an amazing guide and almost friends. Since everyone I know scoffs at a 20 dollar pen. As for my favorite inks, I discovered are Noodlers Australian Black Roses, Apache Sunset, PR Ebany Green, Lexington Gray, and Noodlers Polar Purple. My favorite pens are the Twisbi Eco, Monteverde Ritma, and Kaweco Sport. Thank you for all the extuisastic information and nerd outs. It has helped me through a very rough year.

I've Made and sold my own inks for a little over 2 years, having different colors based on the paper is a common occurance in my work, making custom inks from customers is the best way to learn how colors work and what doesn't

I travel full time with only a carryon, so while I really wanted the Inkvent calendar, I had to open them all like a goblin so I could figure out what would go in my liquids bag. (To be fair, 3/4 of my liquids bag is just ink.) There were some BEAUTIFUL colours in there. Deck the Halls is lovely, and I agree about Serendipity. I have a Diamine Frankenblue that is "here is all the leftover sample bits of Inkvent blues that I combined in to one vial", and this year's blue fits right in. ;)

I completely relate to Drew's reaction on hearing the word "Puce". It's one of those words that conjures up the image of a caretaker's bucket in a primary school corridor. Instant triggering. For me the equivalent revulsion words from my childhood are "thus" and "plus". I use them both all the time nowadays but, as a youngster, I'd only ever see them written by someone else.

I have every ink you mentioned! I will make a confession though - I usually still buy Ferris Wheel Press inks from Ferris Wheel Press, because I'm always worried I won't get the limited edition ones before they're gone. That and Van Diemans (which you don't carry) are the only ones I buy elsewhere. I would LOVE to see you do a monthly new ink sampler. Like a sub box except you don't have to worry about having a specific number of units to box up and ship out.

I have grown to love Ferris wheel. Press, Ink. their presentation is over the top, and the colors are well saturated and beautiful. I find that the shimmer inks haven’t yet clogged my pens. I love some of the first series like jellybean blue. A beautiful, bright blue. I’m also a fan of Diamine Oxford blue. It is bright, yet a little darker than Kon Peki

@@ImCFoxx I do have some problems with clogging in my Lamy Safaris (my pen of choice) but all of mine are fine or extra fine nibs, and it only happens if i let the pen sit for a week or more before using. Im usually able to clear it up by wiping the nib with a paper towel

I have several FWP Ferris Tales greens with heavy sheen/shimmer and their Sweet Honeydew. The Ferris Tales are super high maintenance but totally worth it. My letter recipient said it does eventually stop transferring to fingertips because he's not getting green fingertips though I am lol. I've discovered a bit of Sweet Honeydew as a dip/rinse adds awesome shading and helps keep things moving. I like them in the TWSBI go stub because the go makes flushing and washing so much easier for me.

I bought a bottle of OS Nitrogen from you guys this year and it's easily one my favorite inks! It does manage to get absolutely everywhere though. This may upset some people, but I don't like Diamine inks very much. They have amazing colors, but they always seem just a little too dry and put down thin down-strokes through my italic nibs. That being said, syrah is my favorite red from them.

Inkvent next box should be White box gold & silver lettering and artwork Or black with a holographic lettering and artwork last option I like is a matte black box with a mix of silver and gold and holo just with that serious pop off the box wow factor. I like the last one obviously 😉

I have the Diamine Oxblood which is a gorgeous red. I know that Writer's Blood has been more prevalent this year but the dry time sold me on the Oxblood. Another great ink I just recently purchased is Diamine Regency Blue. I think itay be better than the Iroshizuku asa-gao I have. Lastly I am considering Private Reserve Ultra Black ink. It isn't gray like many black inks but black. Yes, I thought of the Platinum Carbon Black but the maintenance from the ink makes me shy away from it.

Diamine Writer’s Blood is my favorite red! I’m a writer so there’s the whole in joke of an editor’s markup and bleeding words on a page. Document black is my go to because of Drew’s black ink testing video. I have Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade. Gorgeous! I have this year’s Inkvent. I’ve been posting daily on Instagram. Yule Log is my favorite! One word - copper! Ghost is my other favorite. It shades so well even in EF nib pens.

This year, I put the Diamine Inkvent calendar on my (early) Christmas list… I did not get it… next year I will not make the same mistake and will just buy it for myself. Also as to the color for next year I think purple would be a great one, but not like a light purple a deep royal purple (close to what you would see on a crown royal bag). I have Christmas ornaments that were passed down to me and their colors are; Blue, Red, Green, and Purple. All with a kind of velvet black sheen and gold accents. These are my favorite ornaments and actually the inspiration for my ink colors search… so, long story short, I think purple would be an excellent choice for next years invent calendar😂

Just a review. I used the Diamine InkVent Calendar this year and loved it. My favorite colors were the shimmer inks. Yule log, Spice Apple, Alpine Shimmer, Dusted Truffle, and Olive Swirl. I was not impressed with the last one called Best Wishes. I find that dark colors do not shimmer and sheen well. All in all, I can't wait for next year. I guess holiday inks just require shimmer:). Oddly my favorites were more brown tones this year. Yea Drew!

I agree that the Organic Studios Nitrogen is a GIANT PITA, but it's sooooo pretty! And it sheens on ANYTHING. It will sheen (and actually dry in a reasonable fashion, with relatively little smearing) on index cards. It does clog my pens SO badly, though. I'm thinking I may need to pull out the glass pen and see how it works with that.

Oxblood is the first ink color, other than black, that I tried and now it is my EDI. I am now looking for a blue-Diamine of course so I can mix some of it with the Oxblood to create a new shade of purple….:-) I see another rabbit hole to fall down into……

I like "everything" about Diamine Writers Blood, Twilight (a proper blue-black: looks black at first glance from a moderately wet nib), and Sepia ... except for one thing: A complete lack of water resistance after it dries (for over a week) on the paper. Does Diamine make a water resistant -- or better yet, a waterproof ink in colors normally used for business records and correspondence that have to last a few years?

Great video, as usual. But I have to tell you that OS Nitrogen clogged up my pen so badly, I never used it again. I actually threw out the bottle this year! It was pretty, yes. But what a pain it was! I have come to the conclusion that if an ink is a shimmering ink, I might try a sample, but I will not buy the bottle. They are just too much work. I am sticking to sheening or plain ink. I did order a sample of the Goulet Colorverse excusive purple ink. I'll see how that goes. I love the color on line. Have a great New Year!!!

Butterfly Nebula is NGC 6302... Both are names for the same Nebula in the constellation Scorpio... Would think you would have mentioned it...

OS Nitrogen was one of my first inks, and I still love it, but getting it out of the bottle without flakes from the cap coming off and smearing everything has made it an ink that I only use when I’ve got time to don some gloves, cover the area I’m working on, and put on some sloppy work clothes! And even that doesn’t guarantee wearing OSN on my fingers for a week!

OS Nitrogen LOL I filled a pen and was finding blue on everything for 2 weeks, including my white dog. I finally threw it away. It was such a PITA color.

I heard about puce in the first season of Longmire. It was the color of a car that the victim had been known to be seen in, kind of a sun faded pink. In the books where a car with an odd color was discussed, the color was scours, which was described as the color of newborn calf diarrhea. I am so looking forward to writing with that color profile...
