Behind bars? They are in front of them. There are 30 bars and restaurants in the Palace of Westminster, all subsidised by the tax payer. After all, we can't expect Peers on a mere £323 a day to pay full price for their drinks. As one Noble Lord apparently put it: "This is the only club in England where they pay you to eat lunch." How I laughed when I heard that. I expect you're laughing too.

If "resignation honours" were simply medals, with no real monetary value or power attached, I wouldn't mind. Let those "honoured" for services rendered boast about it: the rest of us wouldn't need to care. But it can't be right for the "honour" to be political power, and payment, for the rest of your life. If we saw this happening in another country, we'd know it for what it is: corruption, and an insult to democracy.

As an Irish person, I feel like term limits on the lords is a little thick. Their entire purpose is to be able to work for the actual betterment of the country because they don’t need to worry about how their constituents will vote in the next election, and that doesn’t sound ridiculous to me.
@kozomi_
@kozomi_ 10 ай бұрын
@@mqxogamessorry, is the fact you’re Irish supposed to make that comment sound any less laughable? The voting history of the lords is enough evidence for a toddler to understand that the majority of them couldn’t care less about bettering their country, the reason they cherish their position is precisely because there are no constituents to represent, so they can behave entirely in their own interest. There is absolutely no risk in ignoring the needs of the country because you can’t be voted out no matter how despicable you are. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, voting on behalf of 70,000 people who elected you and can remove you instead of for absolutely no one except yourself and the other self-serving power that appointed you tends to be more of what we call ‘democratic’.

theres many reasons why. a large portion of the population simply doesn't care. their only concern is making it to the next weekend to get blootered. others have too much on the line. loans, mortages, student debt, a family to feed etc... pensioners are obviously out of the question and many younger people are too busy trying to be roadmen. this leaves a very small portion of the population willing to actually do something but no plan or course of action.

Conservatives control the media and people will believe the media telling them it’s bad. They won’t say it’s bad because the only ones benefiting from FPTP are Conservatives (and SNP in Scotland) but rather that’s it’s against British culture and tradition - that it’s a leftie move to make us more similar with EU than being proud of the tradition… or some BS. And if it comes to a referendum - it won’t happen. We need FPTP to bring Labour government and they need to put it in the manifesto so it can’t be blocked by Lords. And then abolish the Lords.

@@jamesbarbour8400 Yeh, we keep hearing this from tory shills, based on literally no evidence (and I'm really not interested in your magic predictions for the future). Despite the Iraq war bullsh*t this country was massively better off under the last Labour government compared to the utter sh*tshow we have now after 14 years of tory parasites and I see no reason to believe that the next Labour government won't similarly improve things for the majority of people. Do feel free to disagree and go waste your vote on Reform or whoever, any vote that goes towards the Farage pantomime is one less for the tories.
@robinholland1136

@@jamesbarbour8400 I'd be very interested to hear your reasoning to back up your statement. Perhaps, if true, it will be because the country has been put in such a parlous state by the Conservatives over the past decade, that no incoming government will be able to make up the lost ground with any rapidity. Remember what Rees Mogg said about it 'taking 50 years' to get back to an economy at the same level as it was before leaving the EU? He was right. But then, the Tories have always been about dismantling and selling off 'the family silver' to their friends, who contribute nothing and take their wealth overseas whilst, at the same time, consolidating their power over the ordinary citizens of the UK. To be honest, the Muppets would be better at running the country than this corrupt, incompetent bunch of liars and theives.

Greed is a pandemic and it needs to be rooted out and condemned. I’m not British, this is the small tip of the iceberg of what is happening and has always been happening on a global scale. We all know it is bad across political ideologies. We all want a thriving economy and competent people in charge. But a system that allows for this sort of favoritism will never allow competence to shine through because it will only go to illuminate their crimes.
