Yeah just don’t tell him that. Nobody under 32 even knows who the hell Howard actually is. And if they do have even the slightest familiarity with him, it’s due to his judging on AGT or whatever the hell. He’s become pretty irrelevant in his later years. I can’t recall the last time I heard anyone say the words “did you hear what Howard did?” or even anything close to that.

You’d be lucky if 3 of them could actually say he’s famous for being a radio host. It’s like asking a kid from the 90’s who Bob Hope is. If anything they’d know him from AGT or like the dude above they saw some clips of Beetlejuice and discovered him that way. But I’m sure even that’d be pretty damn rare nowadays.

I worked as an i.t. technician on the Howard stern show from 2013 to 2016 . On numerous occasions I heard Howard screaming at producers about ratings and "what the fuck is up" with these podcast and how much money do they even make. They basically lied to him and said that podcasting was just a fad that would "go away." At one point he was having numerous meetings with a Podcaster named Adam Curry and was trying to pick his brain about how podcasting worked but Howard couldn't grasp it and finally the meetings just stopped. I just lied about all of this.

Great job compiling all these old clips as usual! Howard is 68 years old, and likely salty that podcasters have quickly become the dominant source for long form interviews and commentary and have quickly replaced what he dominated for decades except without the scrutiny of the FCC. Podcasters have essentially made Howard obsolete and he can’t accept that it’s the evolution of radio. Much like streaming took over traditional TV, podcasting took over radio. That being said Howard lost his edge, instead of stepping over the line, he now tows it which is the exact opposite reason everyone tuned into him to begin with.

JRE, Tigerbelly, Flagrant, Theo Von's This past weekend, etc. It just goes on and on. Not saying they're bad or anything, but its just becoming to much. No podcast feels special or exciting. That’s not what it is. Howard isn’t resentful that podcasters don’t have to go through the scrutiny he once did. He’s upset that he has no leverage, no position of power to gatekeep. He’s bitter that anyone can plug in a mic and if they’re talented enough and driven enough, they can become a massive star. He hates that. He hates that because the separation between him and the “other” blurs more and more. He wants to be above everyone, always. Now he’s fading into obscurity even more rapidly than ever before and a whole slew of audio format entertainers are popping up and he can’t pull any shit behind the scenes to stop them.

I would argue he is annoyed that it's actually the opposite. You don't have to have talent now, or drive, you just need a pre-existing relationship with someone who has a popular podcast. That's just the thing. Most of them are talentless and still succeed because of who they know. They just get in on the podcast circlejerk, then get involved in some influencer drama, and that's it, they make a career out of that, even if they literally never had a joke land in their lives. They're never driven to hone their craft and they don't drive each other to become better comedians (if they're even capable of that) , and we are subjected to endless mediocrity as a result.

Stern was huge in the 90s too man. He was at a high level for a long time. Longer than most, and his interviews are still pretty good. He mostly talks about old controversy’s that people are fine discussing at this point.. he has almost no discernible opinions of his own, lol, as one person on one side of a feud or controversy he’s their best friend, and then the opposite side is on and Howard takes their side.. but it makes the guest give a maybe more honest or longer answer than most sound bites from them on the topics of yester-year.

The one thing I will defend Howard on is the interviews. He's damned if he does damned if he doesn't. If he asks people crazy questions and embarrasses them, it's good radio but celebs won't want to go on to be interviewed. So he has more people going on to be interviewed because he isn't ripping on them anymore. This may be an unpopular opinion but maybe Howard was funnier back in the day because there were boundaries, so they had to be creative with what they said and use innuendo. There were a lot of boundaries to push, which was exciting. Now Howard can say anything and it's not challenging. Idk. It's something I've wondered. Or maybe he just got boring. Lol!

That's amazing because Howard became famous by doing the exact opposite. He would eviscerate Hollywood elites and became an "all-talk" morning personality - something unheard of in his era. So naturally, when you become #1 in the country, the show becomes a good vehicle for promotion and celebrities would start to come on the show. Now Howard is an ass-kissing buddy of the same people he would roast.

The thing about Podcasts is that no, not just anyone can become a successful podcaster. It still takes hard work, you still need to know how to grab and hold audience, work ads into your show, and be able to plan for longevity. Which I think is why a lot of standup comedians have a successful podcasts. Yeah there's a lot of random nobodies who made it but all in all there's still a level of talent and work that goes into these things. I bet a lot of these broadcasters think people just hit a button and they have a show. It's not how that works at all.
