Actually, the simplest answer is, they are both right. I hate to admit that, as it was my brother who corrected me years ago, and I refused to believe him until I did a deep dive. It's comes from the Greek prefix gigas, which is pronounced with a soft G ( as in gigantic). It was intially used in Germany in reference to Gigawatts in the early 1900's, but American scientists from the 1960's started to pronounce it with a soft G, more in keeping with the root etymology. The more popular pronunciation is with a hard G (as in Gate, and my way of pronouncing it), but there was never really any consensus on pronunciation. In fact, it should really be jai-ga-watt, if using the root word. The same happened with Gif, which apparently is correctly pronounced Jif. Sorry boring, I just hope my brother doesn't see this.
