Takeaways from tonight's "Extraness" episode: 1. Ryan, Rob, Karen, Bryce, Ralph and Craig in the house tonight... 2. We are 12 minutes into the show when Pete realizes he never sent the link for Craig to join the show... 3. "What Ralph said" 4. " The extraness of the vocals" 5. "...Paul Stanley screaming his nuts off" 6. The frustration of audience participation segments on live albums... 7. Ryan with a Steve Keeler voice impersonation... 8. "Oh shit! I thought we were doing 'Jailbait'" 9. "I got shit to do" 10. "It's why punk was invented" 11. Ryan with a 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' analogy (with sound effects) on the album "Unleashed in the (mother fucking) East"... 12. "I don't care if they recorded it in a barn on Mars" 13. "The screams in that one could shatter glass six counties over" 14. "If you got Binks, it don't stinks" 15. "...singing like his balls are in a vice grip" 16. "I don't have time for all that live album bullshit" 17. "Does the bass sound like a bulldozer rolling through your wall? HELL YEAH!" 18. "It doesn't need to be faster and sloppier. It's already pretty sloppy as it is" 19. "...plays like his balls are on fire" 20. Sitting in your car in the driveway or garage waiting for a great long song to finish... 21. "Uli Roth beats the guitar like it owes him money" 22. "I thought it was "smell my fart'" 23. "Caterwauling " 24. "...next weeks episode: The ugliest bands" 25. "You and I should share a square"

And you were spot on! I hated that song for years until I discovered the debut album version. Now I've done a 180 and it's one of my favorite Maiden songs. Paul's ferocious punk swagger and Clive's phenomenal drum groove at the break make it a heavy metal masterpiece! But I will never listen to that terrible live version again.

This is really must-see TV. Agree with another comment that stated that watching was like hanging out with buddies. On this episode, I was surprised that the studio tracks came out on top. These aren't just live albums, they are iconic live albums. One of the ones that i agreed with was "Stranglehold'. Rob Grange did a lot for Ted on that self-titled solo album and beyond. I can also proudly say that I was in attendance the night that BOC recorded "Astronomy" in Columbus, GA in 1978. Angel opened that show. The Godz were also on the bill, but had to cancel when that show was rescheduled.

I am going to beg forgiveness from my teenage self. My favorite Motorhead album is “Motorhead” as it was the first Motorhead album I bought and I remember talking about it with my friends at school. However…… “Iron Horse (Born to Lose)” from “No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith” is almost a “meaning of life” song for me. The lyrics, the delivery, everything just elevates this song (for me) to being more than a song. Dear Ryan, if your aliens from outer space ask you for a song that reflects the meaning of life, please feel free to give them this song (from “No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith”).

Some live albums seem better because the acoustics make the songs sound better. A good example is Paris by Supertramp. Contrary to popular belief there was very little reworking in the studio afterwards, only Helliwells keyboards as they got lost in the mix. But I prefer listening to the live songs from Crisis and Crime to the studio versions, which, to me made them sound weak. Le Bercy where Paris was recorded had great acoustics and the songs had a much fuller sound.

Anyone who says "I don't have time for all that" isn't a true music fan. Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix on Band Of Gypsys, No Quarter & Dazed & Confused by Led Zeppelin on The Song Remains The Same, Child In Time by Deep Purple on Made In Japan are all masterpieces by the greatest musicians. Growing up in the 70s the highlight of a concert was the guitar solo & when the band went along with it it was magical. Live music is going to be faster than the studio version as it is played with more emotion & that's what makes it better. Some versions of live songs that are better than their studio version are Kill The King-Rainbow, Lord Of The Thighs(Live Bootleg version)-Aerosmith, Then Came The Last Days Of May(On Your Feet Or On Your Knees version)-Blue Oyster Cult as well as the 4 I listed above. BTW, where's the King Chris Alo? Always enjoy his opinions/rants.

Shout out to Bryce for picking Somewhere In Time as his favorite Maiden album! I'm glad Butch wasn't on the show this week to trash it again like he did when Nick Franco picked it as one of his five favorite albums. I don't hate Butch, but he can be an asshole sometimes, which would be fine if he could take what he dishes out (from anyone but Lynne), but you'd start WWIII if you told him David Lee Roth can't carry a tune in a bucket. Remember how he came down on Alo like a ton of bricks when he dared to say Priest would still be together without Richie Faulkner ("Bad Opening Bands")? I also get tired of him interrupting everyone, so it's nice to get a hiatus once in a while.

I hated that song for years because of the Live After Death version. Maybe it's fun if you were in the crowd, but on a live album it's beyond grating to hear five minutes of "ok, now you on the right half, I wanna hear you say 'I'm running free yeah!'" tacked onto a three minute song. Then I heard the original on the debut and Paul kills on the snarling punky vocals the song demands and Clive has arguably the best drum groove in all of heavy metal, and now it's one of my favorite Maiden songs. No disrespect to the OP, but I couldn't disagree more.

The Mob Rules studio version is the best. The Mob Rules song is different on the “Heavy Metal” movie soundtrack.

Dokken "One Live Night" album has a great version of Tooth and Nail. Iron Maiden "Ed Hunter Live" has my favorite version of Fear of the Dark. Dio Sabbath "Live Evil" is the best live album ever IMO minus the Ozzy era songs. Pantera "101 Proof" is amazing also. The Domination/Hollow combo sounds meant to be. Incredible throughout.

If you guys are talking about Live After Death, it wasn't Run To The Hills it was Running Free that had the extended audience participation moment. Flight Of Icarus= studio Deuce= either or but I'll go Alive cos no fadeout Mob Rules= live cos fuck fadeouts Emerald = studio Strangelhold= studio Victim Of Changes = live Overkill = studio La Villa Strangiato= live (although Alex's solo on Exit is gloriously violent and nasty). Man On The Silver Mountain = studio I guess, but the real best version is on Dio's "The very Beast Of Dio."

Live After Death is my all time favorite live album. Nothing even comes close. But i have to say that when i first heard the album i was a bit disappointed. I was 12 when it came out and so I wasn't used to live recordings yet. And the faster pace on the songs kinda put me off at first. But after a couple of runs, i just couldn't get enough of it. I still love every Maiden album before LAD, but man that album changed my life.

"Unleashed In The East" was my first exposure to JP, and it simply blew me away. Still one of my favorite live albums of all-time. To be honest, I did go back and buy a couple of the earlier albums, but they didn't live up to what I heard on UITE. I love most everything Priest did from 'Hell Bent/Killing Machine' going forward, but I've had a lifelong issue with the sound quality of Columbia records in general. Some of the most satisfying remastered discs I own were once on Columbia vinyl, and I hated the sound. It didn't sound that bad back in the day, as most of us had crap stereos until we could afford what we really wanted, so we didn't know any better. In retrospect, most of the Columbia catalog sounded like shite... but I digress.

I'm with Ryan 100% on Motorhead. Great as the studio version is, the live version is off the f'n charts! They are going at it so hard, you feel like the band is just going to break down at any second. In Karen's terms, the dirtiness on No Sleep has an extraness!

In 1982/83 Live evil was considered very well produced. Nothing sounded like that: ferocious, wicked, evil. Immense

concerning les binks drumming on *unleashed in the east* it has to be said that it isn't as precise and to the point, not that heavy and funky together as simon phillips drumming on sin after sin. simon is another dimension of drumming without any doubt!!!
