The Hum for 5 minutes

This is a simulation of "the hum" the way that I perceive it. You must be using headphones with good bass response or it won't sound right. Turn the volume to the point where it sounds similar to an idling large truck in the distance. I live in the midwest, United States, and I do not have tinnitus or hearing loss.

It is NOT amazing when you suffer from it. This is the closest someone has made it, but it is without droning. And to the other guy saing that some older does not hear it bcause age, that is wrong. Our lower perception of sound does not gonaway, it is the hich ebd that suffers with age. Low is no problem.

This is exactly what I've heard and it lasts for about 30 minutes or more. It can get to the point where it actually hurts my eardrums. Thought it was some sort of aircraft overhead. Happens in the wee hours of the morning - usually just after midnight. This is on the west coast, northern California. No one else I've mentioned it to seems to have heard it.

Thank you for your comment. I was living across the bay in Marin at the time I heard it (on more than one occasion). I know it wasn't my imagination. Kind of creepy though. And, it seems to hover just above but nothing in sight and then it vanishes.

This is VERY close to the sound inside of my house and yards (front and back). Has become more noticeable in the last 6mo to a year. Varies in amplitude (louder and softer). Power lines go over top of my house. Power company refused to come into house to hear it. Wife can not hear it. Not constant, happens more often at night and light rain/foggy days. Central Ohio. 50 years old. 35 years experience with electronics. I do have tinnitus....this is NOT ringing...low frequency, droning sound like a distant motor running. Power company did replace connections on pole at transformer in back yard....had no effect, hum remains. Suspect it may be induced into power grid by an external source. ??????

I’m on the Gold Coast in Australia and I’ve heard this twice in the last month. Both times it lasted almost all night. It was coming from the east the first time and the second time I drove to my friends house 28 km away and it was much louder but from North West. I recorded it both times, it is definitely the same sound.

I never actually knew that there was a big thing about "the hum" so it's nice to know I'm possibly not crazy. Starting around a year ago for me, whenever I was sitting in my living room at around 12:30 am, this humming noise would permeate throughout my house, it almost sounded like it was actually shaking my home. This isn't what it perfectly sounds like, but it's damn close. It doesn't scare me or cause me pain, but I feel a strange curiosity towards it like I need to go outside and find it.

First time I heard it was about four or five years ago and I thought it was a oil delivery truck left running down the street. The next night I heard the same noise and thought another truck and I fell asleep,but on the third night I thought what are the chances of three nights of continuous diesel trucks idling down the road. I went looking for the noise, I came up with maybe my neighbors water pump was malfunctioning, maybe the local winery has a giant condenser always running, government underground testing, all were wrong. My best guess was that the massive oil tankers that deliver just 2 miles off shore from my house are constantly running their giant diesel engines and the sound is traveling through the water into the earth and into my house. Probably still wrong, I was loosing my mind and couldn't sleep at night. It was like Chinese water torture the constant drone that nobody else could hear. Finally a friend that also heard the noise had told me it was called the "HUM" and turned me on to the phenomenon that only some people can hear the ultra low frequency drone. I still don't have a answer for it but I sleep better knowing others are out there that hear the same noise.

I can see that. I heard that there is a constant humming 1 out of every 50 people hear. So this is what it sounds like? I heard that a few committed suicide cause they couldn't take it anymore. I’m 15. I’ve heard a noise similar to this my whole life. My hearing is fine. It’s not tinnitus. I hear a noise like this but like 10 octaves higher. A very high pitch sound, but wavering intensity and a bit of pink noise. It’s very strange. I’ve learned to accept it and any moderate noise drowns or out entirely

Heard it since I was diagnosed with snow eye syndrome. The funny part about it was I was into energy/spells and this guy on yt to tell me to close your eyes and see the energy around u like dots and I could see it. After that I had hums whenever I was quiet. I didnt really bother because somehow I could actually make the hums in my ears be lower or higher. Am also very sensitive to sound and can hear almost anybody if they arent whispering straight into somebody ear.

That's it! great simulation. I heard it earlier this year in my garden in Ireland. I had to be standing in a particular spot to hear it and it was very loud. The strange thing is when I took just one single step back from the spot I could no longer hear it even though it was so loud. Sure enough when I took one step forward there it was again. I haven't heard it since. I must also mention I heard a very loud boom some months previous to the hum but I don't know if they were connected. Thanks for sharing this video.

I moved into a new appartement in december and since then, can hear this pulsing sound very silent, but noticable in my living room. On some moments, i can feel the vibrations in the floor and if i move closer to a certain wall, i can hear it a little bit louder. It made me almost crazy, because ive tried for days to find the trigger for this sound. I never found it and probably never will. So i started living with it, just don't listen to it anymore and ignore it. One has to forget it, or he will be restless for the rest of his life i guess.

I feel ya guys,I have tinnitus in a very heavy for,I hear about 4 high frequency sine waves in my ears combined with the hum. To be honest the tinnitus is from recently and it does die off from time to time,and its barely noticeble,but the hum has always been with me from the very start of my life,I first remember hearing it when I was a 4 year old and I was just sitting in my extremely quiet room,and at the time I thought It was just something involving the house,but later in the years I started thinking that its the earth's crust moving under my house,after I was proved yet again wrong,I only found out a year ago that this is something thats inside me,cause I have never moved house before,but when I was on a vacation and went 300 miles deep in-land and was just lying in an extremely quiet hotel room,I heard it and at that moment I already knew what was going on.

I just wanna share my experience about this. Way back 2021, around 2 or 3 am, me and my sister heard a sound similar to this and it was really scary. I usually woke up around this time too, I don’t why haha. But we’re still a little perplexed and not sure cause nobody around our neighborhood heard the sound. And it was actually really loud so we don’t know why nobody heard it, and it was like coming from above our house and lasted like a minute or two.

What I have experienced since March 2019 is both an oscillating pulsing, interspersed with long intervals of a steady tone. The tone (note) itself stays static. This isn't the "popular" hum. This is not due to a problem with my ears, or anything internal. It stopped entirely for one week from November 23 to December 1, 2019. Nothing had changed in my environment. I can hear the tone outside, but not everywhere. The same is true for inside buildings. Even some buildings with every electronic device, do not have this sound. I have attempted to find variables. I have attempted to map out the locations where I hear, and do not hear the sound, but find that it is too draining to work at that too much, as a lot of energy goes into living with the sound.I can't listen to the sound presented in the video, as I do not have headphones, and just this PC.

I hear this all the time. Its louder during the night but i sometimes can hear this during the day. I always think its coming from outside. But nothings there...

I heard it again last night. And I don't even live in a rural area. It was really loud last night to and I asked my brother if he can hear it and he can't. Last night, it sounded like something was hovering over my house while also pulling down the throttle on a motorcycle and just sitting there. Also, I felt the vibration of it to. I look outside and theres nothing there but thats where it sounds like it comes from. Its really annoying man.

I live in Oregon and I've been hearing a similar low humming noise at night for months. I travel between two cities that are about 100 miles apart and I hear the noise in both cities. I'm just guessing, but it would require an enormous energy source to generate a sound that covers that kind of distance.
