There was another story i read once, that the prophecy said the kings son will kill him, but the king ignored it and raised him with love, years later when the king was old and suffering, the son went through with mercy killing on his fathers request.... So it doesnt have to be hatred, Frieren could ask Fern to kill her for plot reasons (suffering or something else, Fern could also be in a situation to choose between humanity and frieren for whatever reason etc Aka a lot of different plotlines could result in such a scenario, including Fern killing Frieren not because she's more powerful, but because Frieren lets her.

Both Frieren and Fern have said it, Frieren's main weakneses are that she takes a lot of time (like, talking about decades at least) to fully adapt to new spells, so Zooltrak and its respective defense version are still """new""" to her, plus she is on average slower to cast spells (for a mage of her level), by contrast Fern has spent her life perfecting Zoltraak and is much faster at casting spells than the average, so she quite literally is the counter to Frieren, if any Magic user that isn't outright stronger than her (like Serie or the Demon King) could defeat her in a 1vs1 Fern is probably the one with the most chances
