@tommyl.dayandtherunaways8202 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it doesn’t quite portray the truth because the church would have absolutely covered up for 90% of Frollo’s actions. I wish they’d been just that little bit braver and kept him as a clergyman rather than making him a judge, but this is still a very brave critique of religion considering the time period it was made. As an atheist, I can understand the caution the writers had to take with this given the social and political environment at the time. The church has almost always managed to remain above criticism, but thankfully, that is changing in recent years.

What i love about Frollo is how he is not some guy with super powers. He is a man with sexual desires that he knows he can't have. It kills and guilts him that he knows he shouldn't feel the way he does but he can't stop being attracted to her and wanting her. So of course the only way to stop it is kill and destroy. The most "evil " here is, human nature.

@nicapp9845 жыл бұрын
I think it's less "human nature" and more the fault of his pride. He was too proud to admit that he was a sinner, and blamed Esmeralda for "tempting him". He uses the excuse that God must want it to happen, thinking that his response is natural and that anyone in his position would do the same. Really it's his own inability to look at himself and realize that it's his fault, not hers, and that he has to be the one to change.

Kyrie Eleison is actually a Greek phrase. It's commonly used in the chants at the Greek church, which are spoken in ancient Greek, and it is often repeated in our prayers. Kyrie in modern Greek actually means “Sir”, or “Lord” when it's told during a prayer, and Eleison means “Have mercy on us” (Eleos = mercy).

My favorite part is when the red-cloaked figures appear after Frollo says his desire is "turning him to sin". I looked it up, and they're singing "Mea culpa" or "Through my fault" in Latin. Meanwhile, Frollo's attempting to argue and say he's not to blame for his lust. I've always thought they represent all his sins, and that when he sees them, he's facing his own damnation and trying to escape it. Thus he sounds so desperate.

Some are just too fun or don't seem nearly as evil as this even if they are. Such as the people ready to kill the beast, ursula basically telling us she's screwed so many over into those monster things we see b4 Ariel enters, etc. Pocahuntas-Savages is quite literal, but it is about two different "races/species" the way they act, it's not so personal and the sides just more misunderstand poor actions than anything. Scar-Be Prepared if you remove the hyena jokes (which I feel like was done to make it seem less dark) has a guy basically taking an army and his own wish to rule to kill the monarchy and make it a dictatorship with marching soldiers and that imagery is way more creepy than it's taken for "because it's animals." And in a way, it's sorta true, as all it takes here is one man, creepy back imagery of red men in coats, a dancing flame, and Frollo to sing of his wrongdoings he is consumed by but wants mercy and is going to do it anyway.

As a young teen, I knew he was singing about confessing his sins. This actually became one of my favorite songs to listen to as a kid and teen. Very few Disney songs at that time had that effect. This song was actually in a middle school play at the school I was attaining at that time, since my neighborhood was predominately Catholic. Public schools today wouldn't dare do plays like this anymore due to the whole PC mentality taking over and focusing too much on exams. Schools can't even explore deeper-darker side of human nature, because it gives kids "bad" impressions and ideas. >_> Some schools go as far as to say you can't even say "no" or "don't" to kids anymore. One can only use positive language, which is rather confusing to use around kids with disabilities and/or disorders.>_>

I don't know why people are saying they feel bad for Frollo and that he's not a bad guy. In the first 10 minutes of the movie we see him: -kill a woman -attempt to kill a baby -lock that baby up in Notre Dame for all of its formative years and early adulthood He's also seen ordering the torture of prisoners when he's introduced to Phoebus, and he also burns down all of Paris so he can find a piece of underage poontang. This is not a good guy.

for me, it's several things: first of all, I don't believe in the terms 'virtuous' or 'wicked', because those seem too relative and stupid terms to me. I only hate villains when all you can say about them is that they are 'evil'. That's a bland and pathetic character. Frollo is more complex, in that he contemplates what he's doing, but constantly tries to prove that he's doing the right thing. The further he goes, the more he has to prove, so eventually you'll get to kill the people who don't believe you. It's the downward spiral that makes the character fascinating for me. Second, he does genuinly believe he's doing the right thing. Especially now, it's important to keep such themes in a movie, because of the religious fanaticism that's going on. In short: he's not evil, but neither is he good. He's a character with his own story that, unfortunately, doesn't end well.

I like that they counterpoint this with Heaven's Light in the film. It really demonstrates how much Frollo has really fallen to the dark side and how some men truly do vehemently loathe the objects of their affection, whereas Quasimodo truly loves Esmeralda and it's that love that allows her to let her go, unlike Frollo who would literally rather see her dead than with anyone else.

This song right here has to be one of the most powerful scores in any Disney Film (excluding Star Wars). It invokes so many emotions; envy, anger, fear and lust. Lust is the big one, as this movie was rated G. This score alone should have made it PG. However it's sung so perfectly, hence why Frollo is one of my all time favorite movie villains; he believes he's doing good yet he's committing several acts of evil, drowning in his own hypocrisy. At times he's calculating and charming but other times he's cruel and sadistic. The perfect movie villain.

***** That is true, however, he keeps talking about her skin and her hair and how beautiful stuff, which (to me at least) makes it seem like he's just freaked out about how he has a boner and doesn't know how to react to it since he's a holy man. I mean, don't get me wrong, I understand your meaning of love and how he wants her to himself and no one else, BUT you have to understand that how he speaks out about her physically, it kind of seems like he's screaming and scared of how he has a boner for her and doesn't know what to do. haha Just to lighten the mood, my boyfriend watched this movie with me one night and he paused it to just look at me and laugh and "sing" that he is afraid and doesn't know how to feel about how he has a boner for Esmerellda and how he is a holy man. It made me laugh for quite awhile since he was standing up right and trying to imitate Esmerellda. Anyhow, This movie is great and I wish that movies like this were made more often instead of parents freaking out about how many "adult things" are put into a children's movie. They're going to learn it in life anyway, why not at least have them a little more prepared instead of having everything thrown at them at once?

He's not saying she needs to bang him or die, he's a devout catholic who presumably never married or anything because he considers himself to be above temptation. Then comes along this one girl, who happens to be a gypsy, a people he has always despised. And for some reason, this one gypsy girl he can't get out of his head. He's fallen for her and has never dealt with temptation before. He just also happens to be a cruel bastard, but he doesn't believe he is because everything he does he believes he does for god. Ridding the world of what he believed were a bad people. Naturally he is confused, but the message definitely is not, "get on my fun parts or die".

To me Frollo displays what I view as wrong with some of my fellow Christians nowadays. Namely how they think that they are superior over others because of it or some other nonsense like consistently telling people who are different they should go to hell (it is a constant source of annoyance for me). Some should be directed to the story of the stoning of the adulteress to make a point (which is the common reference) but others I think should be directed to Luke 12:48 where the Good Lord says. "Much is given much be required". Overall there is a reason why pride is one of the Seven Deadly Sins (though I think all religions at some point or another are guilty of that). (yikes that was longer than I intended it to be)
@Ignisan_66 Жыл бұрын
Have you been living under a rock? In today's western society, religious people especially Christians are constanly mocked, ridiculed and even opressed by the media, films, TV and by goverments which are now controled by the secular anti-religion establishment. There are people that are being fired form job simply for their Christian beliefs. But this is not really surprising, for the Bible wisely foretold that the persecution of Christians would happen, especially in the end times in which we live now.

joshua miller obviously when people say they want a romeo and juliet romance they dont mean the deaths and misunderstandings, but their actual week long affair was so messed up that you would never want an exact copy of their love. that is why it bugs me when people say they had a "perfect love" or "true love". at best it was a mutual crush. no need to get so defensive over it. (also, romeo and juliet was a romance, but it wasnt written to express the love. it was to show how conflict over petty things can tear families apart. i hate when people romanticize it so much that it seems like romance was the only point of writing it.)

elmakarov It's in the beginning but it's also playing in the background throughout his song. It's to show what a hypocrite he is and how he is no where near as good a Christian as he professes- the prayer is about admitting fault and taking responsibility for ones actions and desires, but Frollo instead is blaming Esmeralda, the Devil, and finally even God himself because he can't reconcile his horniness with his delusions of righteousness and moral perfection. It's also a prayer of humility so saying he is "so much purer than the common, vulgar, weak licentious crowd" is another thing that damns him.

Jonathan Campbell Isn't the last part explains vanity?
@Nerdicronia9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Campbell I'm not even going to go into how vain hypocrisy seems to be the order of the day amongst most "Christian" crowds, but I will say this: Frollo at this point is going mad with desire due to his ignorant upbringing with they would drill into everyone how women are the source of evil and "you can't be a serve the church and love another at the same time" due to some ugly bastard not being able to get laid and so edited the bible accordingly. What that mini-rant has to do with the film is this: Frollo went mad thinking he was being corrupted by evil spirits when it simply boiled down to his never being taught how to properly accept that humans can and do get urges as part of who and what they are. As a species, we'd go extinct if we _didn't_ have the urges (yeah I know, back then they didn't know that and blah blah lack of education blah, but there you have it).
@jonquilgemstone5 жыл бұрын
Blames Esmeralda, the devil, and even God instead of acknowledging "I should refuse to act on my urges instead of using temptation as an excuse." This is the kind of thinking which blackened his soul, and I like how we have this look into his thoughts (and how relatable it is-we all have thoughts we don't want responsibility for).

Is anyone else impressed by how much expression Tony Jay managed to put into this song? It's even more obvious when you listen to it without seeing the animation, because there's no visual to distract us from his voice. But then again, the visuals match perfectly with his vocal inflections. For example, when he sings "like fire" for the first time, he gasps out the word "fire", which works remarkably well with how the animated Frollo is shown recoiling from the fireplace at the same time.

One of the darkest movies and darkest songs of Disney. How it mentions hell, demons, the devil, God, heaven, angels. Sort of the topics that would be sorta taboo in a children’s movie. But I remember ever since I was 5 this was a movie that I would rewatch on VHS countless times. It definitely was unlike any Disney film, it felt real as far as the villain, how society acts towards differences. Truly a wonderful classic

I love that when he says God have mercy on her, and then God, have mercy on me, he means two completely different things. The first he's basically saying she's irredeemable and will face God's judgment when her time eventually comes. The second he's pleading to God to remove her as a temptation for him. So, he's basically saying forgive her sins, but kill her so that I can't be tempted anymore. The person who wrote this song is brilliant.

This song is so good! It’s so creepy and disturbing, yet enchanting and haunting! It has this weird eerie charm to it that even though the subjects involved in this song are disturbing you can’t help but love it and become enchanted by it. And another thing I love about this song is that unlike a lot of Disney villain songs it doesn’t make me feel like I should root for the villain or I think the villain is way cooler or more cunning than the hero. This song brilliantly shows how horrible this villain truly is and doesn’t make me root for him at all. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this song is ridiculously good, haunting, powerful and just a straight up masterpiece!

Ahh. I think I'll like watching old Disney movies even better now that I'm older. I know the original, creepy and tragic stories that the movies were based on and I can catch all the adult themes in the movies that I missed as a kid.

I personally love how he addresses her retention before his, truly believing his religion and his post to be more superior than her pure heart. Religion plays such a big role, from Frollo’s twisted ideals to Esmeralda’s heartfelt songs, it is a very mature theme that needs to be shown more often.

Tony Jay, the singer in this song, died August 13, 2006. Shame too, he had some mighty impressive pipes.

I'd honestly rather see another studio do it because Disney would definitely tone it down. If they feel the need to tone down Aladdin, I don't want to even know how dull Frollo would be. However if they could somehow manage to do it right, with such darkness as it has, it'd easily be one of the most ambitious, creepy, well done movies of all time.

If only Alan Rickman or Ricardo Montalban were alive. They would’ve been perfect for Frollo.
