We hear a conversation in one the last books of Notre-Dame De Paris: a woman hated gypsies because some had exchanged her baby with another baby who was hunchback, this woman appeared to be: Esmeralda's mother and she abandoned the ugly baby in a church, never heard of Jehan's affair with a gypsy (although it could make sense)

But that is with the mixing of genetics too (I would guess you might even have more diversity between your parents too?), recessive genes make things more conplicated om how children turn out, but it's very strongly implied that both of Quasimodo's parents areally shown on screen. So, this is the equivalent of two white people giving birth to Michael Clarke Duncan - something doesn't match in that DNA!

This is also true for my children, even as half siblings. Even myself. My mother being unusual due to the fact that she is Dominican with very pale skin. My father is Costa Rican and much darker in complexion. I take after my dad. As a stay at home mom, my skin turns lighter in winter (I can almost pass as white to strangers from a distance) because it is too cold for the kids to go out and play. In summer my skin tone turns back to my father's skin tone.

Maybe Quasi just got recessive genes and turned out lighter. Who knows the ancestry that passed that down. In the book its mentioned hes born into the Gypsies but doesnt say the parents are. The gypsies abandoned him and he was found and adopted by Frollo . That's by the book tho, the movie had a different beginning

My parents and my half siblings all have significantly darker skin tones being primarily of African-American ancestry dating back many generations. Yet when I was born my complexion was that of a white Caucasian. I also was not outdoors much as a child. In spite of this I had melanin in my skin & still stared to get naturally tanner (albeit still significantly lighter by a large margin by comparison) into my adult years. My skin melanin also does naturally fluctuate in tone depending on the seasons. Also just as a side fun fact to mention, I realized after doing more dna ancestry tests and research showed a bit of southeast Asian dna that carried over into my appearance that is not seen in either of my parents or siblings. This has always made people often ask of my ancestry especially when they learned of my upbringing and family and why I look so much different. Needless to say it was an obvious recessive trait from a few centuries back that somehow became dominant in my appearance. That's just the beauty and randomness of the way genetics works. It's not as linear or as black and white (literally and figuratively) as some would think to argue that it may be.

It's not really impossible for him to come from dark skinned parents. His parents could have had a parent that was light skinned. I mean, I have two elder sisters who could pass for of European descent (they are very pale), and my skin tone is much darker than theirs. Both my parents are dark skinned, but only my grandmother has the same skin tone as my sisters. The DNA traits game doesn't stop with the parents...not by a long shot.

So while listening to the whole first half about four minutes of this video I disagreed she saying that Quasimoto is not the birth child of the gypsies doesn't seem accurate to me it could be very possible that he was her son just because his skin is lighter and has red hair means nothing.. I loved reading all of guys post about people being diffrent skin tones from there siblings showing that not all famies are one shade or one type.... .... This isn't how skin color works. Darker colors are more dominant, BUT people with darker colors still have all the genetic information to produce the lighter colors but it is unlikely since the darker colors are dominant. People of the same skin color can always produce children with the same skin color or lighter. This means two gypsies with olive-skin could absolutely produce a fair skin child, especially if it's one who already has a variety of rare genetic traits as shown in Quasimodo who has red hair (light color,) blue eyes (light color,) fair skin (light color,) and physical deformities. Quasimodo doesn't have to be albino to have light colored skin, hair, or eyes, it's absolutely genetically possible. For example, horses that are genetically non-albino pure white (the horses we see that we consider "white" are not truly, genetically white in coloration but are a very, very light cream or other variation) end up dying shortly after birth IF they even make it full term due to the genes for a true white coloration being linking to some physical deformities that kill the foal. Not to be racist but since this is an historic story, the idea of gypsy inbreeding may have been a factor and having a child with a bunch of rare/unlikely genetic traits all put together could be a hint at that. Inbreeding increases the chance of recessive traits showing up, including conditions like Quasimodo's deformities.

Yemi Babatunde. I agree too but I also have a 2nd theory which should be considered. What if she was a STEPMOTHER? My Theory goes that the Gypsy Dad was married TWICE! Wife #1 was a pale - skinned Redhead who left her abusive home & joined the Gypsies where she meets & marries her husband. She dies in childbirth & some years later the dad remarries, why wife #2 would care about her stepson as if he were her own? Well, perhaps she had a child herself at 1 point & it died, but her maternal instinct refused to die. The Gypsies in this tale show an Extremely Strong Family Bond, even towards distant relatives.

While it may be a money grab I actually have a theory based off your own. Say we were in the disney world and it was all part of the story this may make more sense: While Quasimodo could have been stabbed in the back and dreamed all of it he may have been in a fit of insanity while doing so and actually thrown his master off the cliff after doing what Simba did to Scar and force him to reveal Esméralda wasn't a witch which would have sparked outrage and the fact he could have forced his master to reveal his true nature, the knife sticking out of his back, which again cause further outrage and then thrown Frollo to his death before doing as you said and curled up with what he believed to be Esméralda's corpse, however Phoebus could have found the woman's pulse showing while she was slowly dying due to smoke inhalation and suffering sever burns around her legs she was still alive, he could also save Quasimodo due to the fact the knife was still in the wound, after all we see Phoebus saved after being stabbed with an arrow so our favourite hunchback could have survived and lived to tell his tale which is why people love him and finally set aside their differences and commend their bravery. Esméralda and Phoebus end up having Zephyr and so we go onto the second movie.

The only reason people hate the gargoyles is because Nostalgia Critic says he hates them. I'm serious. I see positive feedback towards them everywhere but KZbin. Because god forbid it's the worst thing ever to have an opinion of your own. I thought they were fine. My favorite is Lavern. I love how she was a mother figure towards Quasimodo. Without them. This movie would have been a dark, depressing mess. I see them working like the toys from toy story. They saw that he needed companionship so they came alive only for him. I mean, mice can't talk so they should be a figment of Cinderella's imagination but I don't see anyone complaining about that....

I can safely attest to the fact that I have no idea who Nostalgia Critic is. Film Theory and Cinema Sins are the only two channels I really look at regularly, and I don't even watch their videos if I know I'm going to talk about the same subject. So, nope, I disliked the gargoyles way back in 1996, because they tried to flip an adult themed movie into something for 5 year olds. I usually don't care for the comic relief characters, but at least most of the time Disney uses cute animals so they're more tolerable and less trying to spit snot and bang goats. Hugo in particular was disgusting, but Victor and Laverne were poorly developed and didn't add to anything either. They were just a mother figure, maturity, and poor social skill voices in Quasimodo's head.

NC's cool and welcome to his own opinion, but I like them :-) Quasi needed that balance desperately, or he really would have gone crazy. If his only personal contact had been Frollo... yikes. The Archdeacon was obviously aware of him, but we never see any interaction between the two after he saved baby Quasi. Which I rather thought was a pity, but there it is. Laverne is my favorite gargoyle too :-D She's awesome. Third favorite in the whole movie, after Quasi himself and Esmeralda.

Also...He could be their son. When my father was a cop. A black couple asked him to make missing person's report, for their son.. And their son was white as slice bread and had red hair. HE WAS THEIR SON BY BIRTH! So with logic..their son (Quizy) could be white. I have seen mix kids, with one white parent/black parent. And is fully white! But has black features. Or Black with fully white features. And sometimes the children are just fully black or fully white..even if their parents are two different skin tones/races.

the thing is the probability for the white skin and red hair is so low that its almost not possible red hair is one of the most recessive traits and the further back the trait came into the gene pool it becomes even rare if you notice majority of gypsy keep to themselves ie court of miracles they hide stay away from persecution because it wasn't just notre dame that was against them almost the enitirety of Europe because they were believed to be pagans and thieves which at the time meant almost everyone hates you and if they don't they tolerate you so that means it wasn't recently that red hair came to their gene pool and gypsys became disliked since they immigrated to Europe from india in roughly 1000 a.d. so basically every one ever hated them and told there children to as well in a time when listened to you parents and are normally married of at young age in other words I'm sorry but it literally almost impossible what is very likely is that he was abandoned and the gypsy woman took pity on him because he was discarded and abandoned because of reasons he cant control like gypsies

Black people's eye sockets tend to be squarer, have wider foreheads, and the nasal passage is bigger. On the surface that translates to the wider noses and more subtle curves near the brow. And everyone is a little different, but that doesn't change the fact that if the world turned to one color, you could still identify someone's race by their features.

I have a theory that might explain who quasi's parents are and why he is light skinned. In the musical, Frollo had a brother. One night, his brother brings a gypsy girl to his room for a birthday surprise. Frollo is disgusted and turns them in to the archdeacon who kicks them out. Frollo tries to apologize, but his brother disowns him and he runs off with the gypsy girl to a life of pleasure. Let's imagine for a minute the gypsy girl is quasi's mother from the film. She stays with Frollo's brother, who is white for a few years and eventually gets pregnant with his child. But after experiencing one of his drunken mishaps (he's an alcoholic) that turns violent, she fears that he might hurt her and their unborn child in a drunken rage and leaves him to start a new life for her and her baby. During that time she meets and falls in love a young gypsy man A.K.A the guy we see her with at the beginning of the movie and they get married. This fits in perfectly with the timeline of the film. Quasimodo is born and because he's a baby with deformities; specifically a hunched back, the poor thing is probably experiencing pain in his back. He needs medical treatment. That is what I think was the reason they snuck into Paris: so she can get help for her baby and they can stay in the court of miracles in the meantime. But things don't go as planned. They get caught, her husband is torn away from her and they threaten to take her baby. She runs, desperately trying to escape, fearing for the lives of her and her child. She fights to protect her baby to the very last second where she is killed by frollo. But hey, it's just a theory.

If you read the book by Victor Hugo, you'll understand that Quasimodo has gypsy parents, and his Disney persona as a red head with a pale complexion makes no sense. Esmeralda was actually born of French descent and when she was a baby she was kidnapped and the kidnappers exchanged her for Quasimodo. Esmeralda was most likely to have a pale complexion, while Quasimodo was not. So, I got that you're going by the Disney movie, but also understand the actual novel and the factual race of each character.

A quote from Oscar Wilde's Tale The Birthday of the Infanta (that's Spanish for Princess, not a misspelling) refers to the Gypsies as 'a Troop of Handsome Egyptians'. The story goes that an extremely lavish party was thrown for the Infanta on her birthday where several groups performed in the City Square including a troop of Gypsies performing a traditional dance of theirs. I reckon that the similarities between the 2 words may suggest that there may be a connection too.

Eleni Storm actually he's judge Claude frollo nephew. in the book and musical frollo has a brother (not mentioned in the movie) who he loved that was more wild and handsome. this brother hated the trapped cathedral and ended up running away with a Gypsy woman he fell in love with. after several years frollo got a letter and went to see his brother to find him dying of French pox. his brother said Quasimodos mother died the year prior and begged frollo to take care of the child because he was dying. that is why Quasimodo looks like that

I 100% agree! (just came across this now) I come from a bi-racial background, my mother is french while my father is an Indian who comes from Romani decent. Let's not forget that in the book he is actually mixed, that would make a lot of sense when coming from mixed decent to be lighter skinned than your parents. Maybe the skin color here is more related to your education than to your decent, after all, Esmeralda's French in the original story but she still has dark-skin in the Disney. So maybe: -Disney did that not to be accused of white-washing -Disney did that not to create a confusion -The skin color is related to education (which doesn't make a scientific sense but come on, if art had to make sense, life would be boring)

It could also be that the ending is heaven. If he died and went to heaven it would make sense for his idea of eternal paradise to be a place where he is considered a hero and is loved by all. Esmeralda being with Phoebus in heaven rather than Quasimodo also makes sense because despite Quasimodo being in love with her he knows she would only be truly happy with Phoebus and therefore be happy for all eternity.

3:16 Well, in the sequel, Phoebus and Esmeralda have a son, Zephyr, who is a miniature version of Phoebus. Also, there were a coupe of redheaded gypsies during the song, "The Court of Miracles." They were wearing the skull caps. I think Disney was probably re-using the same character design since there are a few that look practically the same.

My little pet theory for the Disney version is that Quazi is a relative of Hercules. After all, he's the only other human in the animated Disney universe who seems to have greater than human strength than Hercules. Add to that that the Gypsies seem to have originated in India in the real world, and thus there being a chance that either his mother, or just one of his ancestors might have passed through Greece on their way to France over the coarse of how may years. Idk, I think it's a bit of a fun theory.

I don't think he is a descendant of Hercules. As explained in the books he got his super strength from years of ringing the bells. If anyone is a dead ringer for being Herc's descendant it will be Prince Adam or Beast as he looks almost exactly like him as a human.

In the play, Frollo had a brother, Jehan, who had Quasimodo with a gypsy named Florika. The reason he's deformed is because Florika got small pox while pregnant, and the disease spread to Jehan, who came back to Frollo after years of not seeing him. Jehan's dying wish is for Frollo to take care of Quasimodo.

I definitely agree with you! She went on to talk about science but totally forgot about the recessive genes that we have. I come from a mixed ethnic family and I am only slight darker than my mother and her father, and her hair is light brown and my dad's is black, but mine is the same color as my grandfather's who's hair is falls between dark brown and off black.

I have a friend who's mixed-race. But when people see her with her dad, who's black, they get confused, because she has the same skin-tone as her mom. She's also got dirty-blond hair, (again) like her mom. It's all about how the genes get bounced around, as a baby develops. I have a feeling the same thing happened with Quasimodo. In fact, I even wrote a fan-fiction about this, filling in the genetic blanks. In the story, his father is a red-haired, fair-skinned Frenchman, and the man we see in the boat at the movie's beginning is actually his uncle (his mom's brother). Maybe, I just like the cutesier side of Disney too much, but I do prefer this idea more than the changeling one from the book.

Coco Meador. Actually I read the book. Let me confirm that Miss Hannigan is BY NO MEANS RELATED TO ANNIE OR ANY OF THE ORPHANS LEFT IN HER CARE. There is a part of the novel where Mr. Warbucks (who adopts Annie) with President Roosevelts help obtains information about Annie's birth parents. Annie is told that they fell victim to a very severe outbreak of Influenza, a description from a recovered photo reveals Annie's Dad was a Redhead & her mum was a blonde. She was left at the orphanage when the parents realised they had caught the disease (they had no living relatives) & had planned on fetching her back when they recovered, sadly they never did. The novel has a different ending to the movie too. Miss Hannigan is arrested for being an accomplice to her brother Rooster & his girlfriend Lily St. Regis in an attempt to kidnap & murder Annie.

I have been saying most of this for AGES! But I will say, that the "Shut it up, will you?!" line would have been common back then, regardless of if it was your kid or not. Deformity was seen as a curse or something along those lines, and even if people knew it was just a malformation, those kinds of things were treated with a death sentence for the baby. Even if Quasi WAS their kid, I can imagine his "father" still using "it" instead of "him". But everything else you said in the first half of this theory is perfect! XDD Granted, I'm biased, because that has been a theory of mine since I had biology class in high school...which was about 12-13 years ago.

I have such a love/hate relationship with this movie. It's so beautiful but the gargoyles are SOOOOO awful. I've hated goofy sidekicks in kids' films since -I- was kid. Same, I actually don’t mind Timon and Puumba, even in the sequel, or even Mushu and Cricket because of how their comedy works. But my God the gargoyles are why I kinda didn’t like this movie. I felt Esmerelda, Phoebus and Clopin already did a great job of carrying the comedy, and it’s confusing why the gargoyles never are alive around Phoebus or Esmerelda, given they’re Quasi’s new friends. Only her goat has seen them alive, and apparently Madeleine in the sequel. Legit Guy Like You and their overall presence is just so annoying and doesn’t even add anything to the story, doesn’t even explain how they’re alive… Other part I slightly hated was Esmerelda choosing Phoebus over Quasi, poor guy.

This would mean the sequel never happened which actually makes a lot of sense because the girl at the end is dancing with Quasi and Zephyr and she’s the same age as the first one. Zephyr is 10 so either her parents had two daughters who look exactly alike or there’s some shenanigans going on because this child should be an adult!

Glad I missed the book in school. ☺ I think, 1. It is a children's movie, so they had to make it less depressing. 2. Quasimodo could be the child of Frolo with another woman. Since Frolo was essentially a Cardinal or Bishop, he tried to hide him or get rid of him in the Chanling scenerio, then the romani/gypsies found him. He killed the adopted mother and father, then took him back in & hid him. 3. The ending to me, sounds like he passed, then went to Heaven with his friends. I thought it was implied a couple of years after the movie had been out.

I also have a theory which should be considered. What if the Lady Gypsy at the start of the film was a STEPMOTHER? My Theory goes that the Gypsy Dad was married TWICE! Wife #1 was a pale - skinned Redhead who left her abusive home & joined the Gypsies where she meets & marries her husband. She dies in childbirth & some time later the dad remarries, why wife #2 would care about her stepson as if he were her own? Well, perhaps she had a child herself at 1 point & it died, but her maternal instinct refused to die. The Gypsies in this tale show an Extremely Strong Family Bond, even towards distant relatives.

Ok, here's the thing: Quasimodo is a hunchback. He has an altered genetic code. Red hair and a hunched back are genetic mutations. He's not albino either, pale skin is a thing that happens with the red hair mutation. So it makes sense that he's a Romani child in the Disney.

My mother is Roma gypsy and she has darker skin and thick jet black hair, and my father is Scottish and has tan olive skin and dark brown hair. But I have fair skin, light brown hair, freckles and green eyes, while my sister has thick wavy dark brown almost black hair, darker skin, and brown eyes. Its possible that the woman shown in the opening scene is actually Quasi's mother.

What if Quasimodo is originally of Irish decent. The gypsies travel a lot. They end up in Ireland and see a disfigured baby crying alone in the woods. The woman feels empathy for the child and takes him with her to Paris. Where Quasimodo is adopted by Frollo, learns to speak French, and thinks he's French because obviously he can't remember his Irish ancestry. Before he was found by the gypsies Quasimodo had two ginger irish parents who saw his disfugurement and thought he was a demon, so they left him in the woods. Also the gypsy man saying "Shut IT up will you" could be a product of the times. I mean it is fifteenth century Paris.The gypsies could be Quasimodo's parents or he could have other parents.

Based on the evidence you presented, yes, Quasimodo obviously was a child that the gypsies found abandoned and then took in. However, based on the father's reaction to the child and his mother being the only one truly concerned for him, I think the mother was the one who took him in while the rest of the gypsies just went along with it because they too were treated like outcasts. As for the gargoyles, it's explained in the musical adaptation that they were his imaginary friends that he created so he would have friends to talk to (like you I don't consider that monstrosity of a sequel canon.)

I was born with reddish blonde hair and super light brown eyes. Both of my parents have dark hair and dark skin. In fact all of my brothers were born the same except for me. I have a mixed ancestry to the point where at the time of my birth, no known living ancestor had been looking like I did. So it's entirely possible that Quasi's parents were the two dark folks in the film who had dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes.

I agree with your theory but I would like to clarify something. Skin color is a bit more complicated and comes from multiple alleles; it is possible to have a light child despite being dark. Since most of his traits are recessive, they could be his parents though it's unlikely to get that many recessive traits.

Yes, but, the movie heavily implies that the gypsies were not reproducing with other populations, as they all looked the same. So, to make Quasimodo so different in an animated film means there was more to it than recessive genes. If it were, the court of miracles would have had at least a little diversity shown.

I heard a rumors, that Disney wanted to make Esme and Quizy siblings. With Esme being 1 and some months older then Quizy (as well as rumors say Hugo hinted this in his own book too)but Disney changed that subplot. And Esme was already in Paris (I know potholes, why Disney didn't do it) as another family member sunk her in a few months prior. And said Gypsy woman was pregnant with Quizy and could not travel, so little Esme was send away with another family member (or close friend)to Paris. There is also rumor they are really Half siblings and Coplin is Esme's father. That Esme was a " love child" after quick fling her mother (aka Quiz) with had with Coplin.

In the Hugo novel Esmerelda/Agnes was kidnapped by the Gypsies and they left Quasi in her place, her mother named Paquette fled to Paris and left Quasi in the Notre Dome.

It’s something about Gypsies believed maybe he was cursed because he was a changling, a fairy child that is born to humans, normally because they’re deformed or are rejects. So unfortunately in the book Quasi’s biological parents are cruel because they got rid of him.

This theory would work but your forgetting something. The sequel. Now i know people bash on Disney sequels but like it or not there cannon and cant be glossed over. Quasi is still vary much alive and Esmeralda for that matter. She even has a kid. Yes people hate it and its quality but its still an official continuation and in it everyone is alive and well. Actually, I've answered this in the comments before in two different ways. Either the sequel is Quasimodo's death dream (like his version of Heaven), OR, you just accept that the sequels are not cannon, as they aren't even made by the same production company that makes the feature films for Disney. Without looking it up, it's like Disney Animation Studios and the straight to film sequels are like Disney Home Video or something like that - they don't even use the same creative teams, and gear their videos towards elementary aged children, which means they write completely differently.

If Quasimodo would have a skin tone that is in between than Melanin is not dominant, if it were he would have the same dark skin as the darker parent. Also despite what this video, and other people, suggest, all humans, except for some albinos, have melanin in their skin, hair, eyes etc. It how much you have, not whether you have it. Also this video goes way beyond anything in the movie. The reason Quasimodo has pink skin and red hair is because that is ho he was portrayed in the book where he indeed is a "Gypsy", in fact he was exchanged for Esmeralda when the gypsies stole her from her mother. The reason the gypsies are all brown is because that is the stereotypical gypsy image, just like their colorful clothes:

I think Zephyr may have been adopted as well. He just doesn't look anything like his mother. We're supposed to believe he's their kid just on blond hair and green eyes? My theory is he was a foundling left on the church's doorstep (Often done with illegitimate children at the time) and Quasi wanted to raise him, but Esmeralda and Phoebus convinced him the child was better off with two parents. They did, however, allow Quasi to be the godfather. (IDK if the Church allowed illegitimate children to be baptized at the time, but they could've fibbed and said Zephyr was theirs.)

Zephyr is literally the child version of Phoebus lol. I don’t look anything like my parents, but a lot of my relatives on my dad’s side says I look exactly like his mom (grandma) when she was younger. And my younger sister is nearly identical as my mom. Some genes are more obvious in others. For a while Disney wasn’t too comfortable with making main characters parents because they’d have children and apparently Disney thought it was disgusting or inaccurate for children learning about how babies are actually born.

Actually in the stage musical esmerelda stays dead and the gargoyles are truly figments of his imagination. Also with quasimodo being pretty much only able to hear the bells the musical takes a lot more from the books since it can get away with a lot more than movies.

Someone here said something about the Romanis having strict codes based on incest and such. They will do extensive research to make sure they aren’t related in any way. And if a child is born with any deformities, even the slightest ones, they will be abandoned in the city or in some cases, killed. This makes sense with what happens in the book. In the book, Quasimodo’s parents actually don’t die. They abandoned him because of his physical deformities. And, get this, they actually take Esmeralda in as their child instead. Which makes them adoptive siblings.

Personally I’d say Pocahontas was darker, especially considering its the only Disney movie that got a sad ending unfortunately. Plus not to bash Pocahontas (she’s my favorite princess and 3rd favorite film) but her saving John Smith doesn’t mean she was able to completely stop British occupation, considering in the abysmal sequel how many British moved to Jamestown, and King James obviously wanted more, he wasn’t going to stop just because one of his noteworthy soldiers Captain John Smith refused to fight anymore. It’s a similar problem in Spirit, yeah he managed to delay the railroad progress by blowing up a locomotive (which were super expensive at the time) but that doesn’t mean he permanently stopped it, as shown in the noncanon series, the city I believe is supposed to be near where the setting of Spirit was (I think the main horse Spirit is his son) but it never shows Little Creek’s village or anything to show if the natives were forced out or something.

My husband is native American and Irish, but he favors the native American in appearance like his mother. He has dark hair and olive skin with brown eyes. While I have very fair skin and black hair with green eyes. When you talked about how a child would be between the skin tones of their parents I had to disagree. So far we only have one child, but our son is as pale if not more so then me. He has white skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Since neither of us have those colors besides my skin a lot of people look at our parents. Both sets of parents have dark hair, my mother having hazel eyes, my dad having blue, his dad having green and his mom having brown. But if you look at my mom's siblings and her biological father? Red Hair, blonde hair, blue eyes. Just because Quasimodo's mother was dark skinned with dark hair doesn't mean she couldn't have a light skinned child with red hair.
