In 1923, when this film came out, my mother was teaching at a girls' school in Hawaii, and she would go out into an orchard in the evening to watch silent movies, which were accompanied by a Hawaiian band. She told me that she remembered the scene early in the movie when Lon Chaney was climbing on the facade of Notre Dame Cathedral and leering at the crowd below; and what was the band playing? "Yes sir, that's my baby; no sir, don't mean maybe; yes sir, that's my baby now!" Seriously, this is one of the greatest silent movies ever made. I also remember visiting Notre Dame when I was in Paris the second weekend in May, 1965, and I had to smile when I saw a small restaurant to the left of the cathedral called "Café Esmeralda." The gypsy girl lives on in the culinary world!😀

I'm here for the classic and beautiful acting portrayal of Quasimodo by Lon Chaney, one of the most gifted, talented, underrated actors to grace stage and screen. His vision of Quasimodo is beastly, beautiful and accurate.

1:12:15 Literally one of my favourite scenes where the crazy old woman realises that the gypsy girl whom she hates for being a gypsy is in fact her own daughter who was stolen as an infant. For a silent film it sure screams with emotion throughout! Great film.

I just received my DVD copy of this film. I also received my DVD copy of the 1039 Hunchback starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara. In time I should be receiving my DVD copy of the 1997 Hunchback starring Mandy Patinkin and Selma Hayek. I already own DVD copies of the 1996 Disney animated film and the sequel. there was also a stage musical from 2014 that used songs from the Disney animated film which I enjoy a lot. All of these versions of Hunchback are enjoyable to me

This movie is from 1923, nearly 100 years old ! Naturally all people involved are long gone now. Lon Chaney ( Quasimodo) died already 1930, over 90 years ago due to throat cancer and shortly after having finished his only talking picture. This msrvelous silent movie was considered lost for many decades until a much damaged copy in a private collection was found. To bad it was only a 16mm copy with many damages and not a 35mm copy, and the original negative, that could have been the best source for the best professional restoration, is lost forever ! Shame on Universal ! So every copy of the movie, that we can watch today, comes actually from this same 16mm source. Sadly this is not the best version around ! There is one, where thy took the only source and at lesst digitally afapted the movie to the 24 pics/sec frame, that is standard since the introduction of sound and slso tried to restore sharpness and contrast as good as possible and even monocolorized the different scenes.

Many books are based on real life characters, whatever the truth, just like Bram Stoker's Dracula. The Ottoman Turks ventured and cleaned eastern Europe for a reason, What would you become suffering from insomnia and mental illness staring into a dark depressive gothic castle with no medical cure? A Vampire. Christ vs Anti Christ, hence evil is evil. Quasimodo can say the Elephant man existed.

まさかあのノートルダム大聖堂が燃えてしまうとは…カジモドの登ったあの塔も今や無くなってしまった…早期復興をお祈りします… It is said that the Cathedral of Notre Dame will burn up... The tower on which Kazimod has climbed is now gone... I wish for early recovery... ※Translation may be a bit weird.
