The Hustler is a 1961 American CinemaScope drama film directed by Robert Rossen from Walter Tevis's 1959 novel of the same name, adapted for the screen by Rossen and Sidney Carroll. It tells the story of small-time pool hustler "Fast” Eddie Felson and his desire to break into the "major league" of professional hustling and high-stakes wagering by high-rollers that follows it. He throws his raw talent and ambition up against the best player in the country, seeking to beat the legendary pool player "Minnesota Fats".
Minnesota Fats is based on a real person: Rudolf Walter Wanderone popularly known as Minnesota Fats or New York Fats, was an American professional billiards player. Although he never won a major pool tournament as "Fats", he was at one time perhaps the most publicly recognized pool player in the United States-not only as a player, but also as an entertainer. Wanderone was inducted in 1984 into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame for his decades-long public promotion of pool.
The film was shot on location in New York City and stars Paul Newman as "Fast" Eddie Felson; Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats; Piper Laurie as Sarah; and George C. Scott as Bert. It was followed by The Color of Money in 1986, with Newman reprising his role. In our next video we will discuss The Color of Money co-starring Tom Cruise.
The Hustler was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. In 1997, the Library of Congress selected The Hustler for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Academy Film Archive preserved The Hustler in 2003. So if you haven’t seen it, ummm I think ya better!! Especially if you love the game of Pool, which I absolutely do!

How can I lose? Because you were right. It's not enough that ya just have talent. You gotta have character, too…. Yeah, I sure got character now. I picked it up in a hotel room in Louisville.

As much as I love classic movies, I've never seen this one. Minnesota Fats was the only pool player I'd ever heard of as a youth and I never knew his likeness played a role in this movie.

The author of the novel Walter tevis always maintains the character was not based on anyone in particular. Rudolph Wanderone aka new York fats quickly changed his name to Minnesota fats and claimed he was the inspiration for the movie.

@@themoviebuffer Yes, for the most part Gleason, who was in reality a great pool player, shot his own pool scenes. The real fancy trick shots were performed by the great Willie Mosconi, who is as well in the movie. One more tidbit, Jake La Motta of Raging Bull fame, starred as the bus station bartender.

Fats wasn't named after Wanderone. He was a scam artist who adopted the name later and claimed that it was.

Thanks for this review. The Hustler is a gem! I think it would play well in a double bill followed by Touch Of Evil… or Perhaps or more contemporary comic relief, the big Lebowski. No pun intended, but I wonder if they had considered shooting The Color of Money in black & white. I really like the soundtrack of The Hustler (jazz & film noir are well paired), the cinematography is excellent, the editing style is smart, and the casting is perfecto. I wonder if the average young adult movie-goer would have the patience to watch a slow paced movie like this. I’ve worked on motion pictures for three decades. I never went to film school. Going to the cinema and attending film festivals has been part of my continuing education on the art & craft of filmmaking. I’m curious if The Hustler is shown at film schools. Due to common shorter attention spans these days, maybe they just show a condensed version of it or just show them the trailer for the movie?. For any of you unfamiliar with condensed versions of feature films, this was commonly done for films that were shown on airline flights. They were re-edits by the studios, and released to film distributors who serviced the airline industry. One of the main reasons for condensing a film was so that it could be shown on a flight that was shorter than three hours. As I recall the full length version was shown at the cinemas aboard cruise ships, and on trains that included a cinema car. Thanks for your review of the film. It’s refreshing to encounter a film review on KZbin that doesn’t put the KZbinr in the starring role… I’m referring to your choice of being off-camera. The spoken voice is more effective that way, one of the reasons I continue to be an avid listener of good public radio programming, especially film reviews I heard weekly on many stations around the country. cheers, HM… founder Highway Cinema
