Gosh, this was such a great discussion! I think I’m going to have to watch again as I’m sure that at least some of it went over my head, however it made me feel quite excited and inspired about all the different forms of divination and philosophical traditions 🤓 Strangely (or perhaps not), I felt like the hexagram you picked was speaking to me and my current moment in life, and it made me feel happy that it was so auspicious ☺️🙏

Regarding the history of Astrology in China there's a useful and extensive academic survey on the subject that I'm gradually working through which answers several of the historical questions that went unanswered in this discussion: "Astrology and Cosmology in Early China Conforming Earth to Heaven" by David W. Pankenier (2013, Cambridge University Press). It's not really a text for practitioners but I think it has a good deal of value, despite its more academic treatment of the subject, as it traces the development of local systems based primarily around Polaris and the Dipper, and the later incorporation of both Vedic and Hellenistic approaches into Chinese Astrology (and I suspect the reverse too some degree as well).

TY! Benebell Wen, I love your book. I WISH you would print CHAPTER 8 on its own as a Reference Book like those really nice Guide Books people have for birds and other creatures. It would feel very nice in the hand and just The reference I need in a smaller CATEGORIZED INTO easy to turn to HEX# very quickly form. ❤ I actually would love your book having been split into 2 books, Chapter 8 and the rest, in a box set. You could even charge more money for more the same. I'd pay for it.

The I Ching is an amazing book; sometimes I have the feeling that I am talking to a living Person. Carl Gustav Jung did a great service to humanity by presenting that Book to Europe and the world. When I think of all the books burned in the Middle Ages, the Inquisition, etc...

This is a sidenote, but I really appreciated Benebell’s comment about craziness (perhaps that was also her Mercury/Pluto speaking). A lot of people in my family are pretty out there/crazy in ways that are sometimes wonderful and often difficult, and the world can be so cruel to people who don’t/ can’t live in consensus reality. For that matter, we can be cruel to the crazy parts of ourselves… but there is often a kernel of sanity inside insanity… Of course, like Chris said, there are different types of craziness… I’ll have to give this some more thought, but I felt touched all the same 💕

Thankyou for sharing. What i noticed about Benebell's words is that it's coming from an awareness of Spirits and direct-experience spirituality with spirits -- which isn't the purpose of this episode. There is a wide range of spirits, and they're not all angels nor enlightened beings. Our perception & conscious awareness of spirits affects our sense of balance, and reality. Those we deem as "mental illness crazy" are often tuned into a particular range of distressing spirits that enjoy chaotic circumstances, misery, or spooking the excitable. I only realized any of this through my own practices and experiences.

Its interesting how life and astrology here was described in terms of coding and needing to be mathematically adept because I precisely described astrology to a friend a few years ago as akin to computer code, or programming of life and everything. Everything has a birthdate. Everybody's life has trajectory that was chosen before birth. The astrology reflects this almost like a computer code--life follows a trajectory, but offers a set of choices within that trajectory. Astrology is a set of options (kind of like a flow chart), because we all have free will and make choices within the life we chose. And make no mistake, astrology is a science. It does require mathematical knowledge. Astrology and astronomy were once one and the same in most parts of the world. In Europe as well until the so called Enlightenment. But prior to the 1700s astrology was actually taught at European universities as a subject like any other science. In fact Galileo was actually an astrologer (he read people's birth charts) as much as we consider him an astronomer today. So was Tycho Brahe. The Roman Catholic church founded the first universities in Europe in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. And astrology was one of the subjects taught (in fact the Roman Catholic Church still operates modern astronomical observatories). Eventually over time astrology became modern astronomy, and why nearly most of basic modern astronomical terms and early calculations were directly derived from astrology. And as I said, even though astrology was demoted in the mainstream, it remains very much a science like astronomy (because that's where it came from). Any advances in modern astronomy and physics also advance our knowledge of modern astrology. Astrology is a subject that like any other science, requires further investigation--it is a live field of study and research. How do black holes, dwarf planets, supernovas, etc.function astrologically? How do red giants, white/red dwarf stars, neutrino stars, pulsars, quasars, etc. affect life on earth in astrological terms? Note quantum physics also helps explain astrology. Quantum entanglement--that observed experiment in physics where 2 particles millions of light years apart can mirror each other instantly--exists because the universe is a conscious entity that like us is all a part of Source creator what many call God. A singularity if you will. So eveything is automatically entangled. Time and space are an illusion--they function only within our perceived dimensions. But outside of these dimensions time and space don't exist. So whatever happens in a perceived faraway planet or star that affects life on earth in an instant astrologically, happens because everything is part of a singularity--we are all connected or "entangled" to everything else in the universe. Frequencies. Super string theory in physics is basically a theory of frequencies that explains how matter/elements have different properties (and note Super String Theory posits our universe has at least 26 dimensions). That is why Tesla said that to truly understand the universe one has to think of it in terms of energy, frequencies, and vibrations. Music is frequencies. Johannes Kepler once wrote a treatise on the planets called Musica Universalis or Music of the Spheres (planets), or Harmony of the Spheres. Every planet and body, every mass, has a different harmony or resonance.

The Chinese adopted the I-Ching from the Yoruba people of West Africa, Nigeria to be exact. The original system that is still around and practiced by me and other children of the diaspora is called IFA. The original system from Nigeria, is comprised of 256 combinations of any given life circumstances called “Odu”. The Chinese opted to adopt only a portion of the teachings and knowledge. The IFA system is the basis for the very computers that we use today. 256 Bits, 256 Odu. Study and learn about IFA if The I-Ching interests you. In short, the I-Ching is like the cousin to the Original system from Nigeria, known as IFA. Great video!
