If I’m not misinterpreting (which I probably am), the Meaning and Principle school reading would have given almost the completely wrong advice in this situation. In cases like this, would it be best to stick with the Image and Number, or to compare both schools and see which one fits more accurately with the current situation?

You are not misinterpreting. Throughout history both schools never were able to work together - you either used Xiangshu or you used Yili. However, I do believe that in the ideal situation the hexagram (=xiangshu) and the text (=yili) should complement each other. The reason I often focus on the hexagram is that it enables me to come to an initial conclusion fairly quickly, which is very convenient when you have to give talks and lectures. That is the reason why I didn't look at the text in this specific case. That fact that I chose not to look at the text is incorporated in the answer of the Yijing: it 'knew' that I would focus on the hexagram and put all the necessary information in that aspect of the answer. Should I have decided to focus on the text I might have gotten another answer, although we will never be sure of that, of course. I think the Yijing adapts to your knowledge and usage of it, which is the reason why you will never get an answer that you can't understand. Now, suppose I would have decided to look at the text instead of the hexagram, I would have focused on the text of the lines and think, "1. 閑有家,悔亡。Interesting. 閑 has to do with blockage, in medical terms it means that something is obstructed, imprisoned, immovable, or exhausted. 家 is normally 'family' but since I can't relate that to the topic, the 'leg problem', I tend to see it as either a suffix for a group of people that are experts in something (like in this case doctors), or as 'a place, a location to stay'. So the 'leg problem' has a place to stay, it is fixed, immovable, and might need experts to solve it. 悔亡: regret disappears. If this were the only moving line this might be a good thing, but it isn't. The disappearance of regret might be part of the problem: maybe it points to a "it's going to be alright" attitude. Etc. I am speaking after the facts, which makes my textual interpretation very hypothetical and maybe even useless. But I hope you see what I am trying to do: regardless of the method that you use, in the end you should always return to the question that is asked and come to a conclusion that is an answer to that question. If you make a clear and conscious decision about the method that you will use, you will always get what you need.
