The Žižkov television tower is one of the dominants of the capital. Not only does it transmit television and radio signals, but it also functions as a lookout tower. However, a number of controversies have been associated with this construction since its inception. We focused not only on them in the next part of our series Live Prague!
What attractions does the Žizkov Tower in Prague hide? We have five spices for you to score on a date with a view:
1. The transmitter was originally supposed to be on Petřín, but the conservationists did not agree. In the end, it was decided to build it on the border of Žižkov and Vinohrady, on the site of an old Jewish cemetery, which was largely destroyed.
2. Construction began in 1985 according to the design of architect Václav Aulický. The public at the time was not very enthusiastic, and the protests intensified after 1989, when some Praguers even demanded the demolition of the tower. Nevertheless, the Žižkov transmitter was finally put into operation on May 3, 1991.
3. The sculptor David Černý, who placed 10 toddlers crawling up and down the tubes on the tower in 2000, took care of other exciting discussions.
4. The Žižkov Tower is the highest viewing platform in the Czech Republic, from which you can see up to 100 kilometers in good weather.
5. The transmitter offers accommodation in a single hotel room, which is the highest in the Czech Republic. You can also visit Bistro 66 or the bistro with a view and enjoy a coffee or cake. If you are looking for top gastronomy, the Oblaca restaurant awaits you here.
