Even in sub-zero temperatures in Upper Peninsula Michigan, you can find one man who surfs Lake Superior.
Daniel Schetter, known as “Surfer Dan,” has become a local legend for surfing Lake Superior, rain or shine, and making epic ice beards in the meantime.

I think what he meant by that is that he shaved his beard, and because of that, the focus is on his friend’s beard. As opposed to shaving it specifically for his friend to have the attention.

@@heyheywoahwoahhey "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” That is something Jesus said. Trusting in Jesus and His promises saved me. I’ll try to make this brief (kinda lol), but the Holy Spirit revealed the supernatural to me. I didin’t believe in “spirits” until that day. I had been oppressed by a demon for many years not knowing/believing it. Jesus delievered me. He took the craving for alcohol away in an instant. No jail, AA group, rehab, hospital, halfway house or anything worked prior. "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. We hide from God. Usually by means of unbelief, and also shame, due to sin. How do we believe in a loving and perfect God who is also Just, when we are so wicked? Jesus paid the price so through grace we can be saved. His last words before His death was “it is finished”…and our debt was paid.

local legends are what make the world just a little better. had this guy in my town who used to be a professor at a pretty well known college who said he was “enlightened” by LSD and would just walk around down town with no shoes and an industrial bucket which carried all his belongings. he was so kind and would even cool jewelry he made during the bi-annual fair our town had and would always say hello to my mom and sister and i. I haven’t seen him since I moved 5 years ago but I hope he is well. He also once sent LSD to the dean of the college with a letter telling him he had a stick up his ass haha

Born and raised on the shore of Lake Superior on Bay Mills Reservation in the middle of a white out blizzard in 64. Born in my grandparents log cabin because we were 20 miles from the Soo where the closest hospital was. We were so far removed from the world that we still did our shopping and trading at the trading post that was built in the 1700's by a French trapper. We didn't have running water or electricity but we had the best underground spring with ice cold water even in July. I will be buried on the shore in my spirit house so one day my spirit will join my ancestors and my body will become one with the lake.

@@datonbush5147 I enjoyed this video. I think it was well made about what seems to be a genuinely sweet man just spreading joy around town. He doesn't seem like someone I personally would actually enjoy spending time with. I am truly happy he exists though. This great little video about this kind-hearted man almost made me shed tears of joy. I am sure there are musicians, comedians, tech innovators, writers, etc. that have brought you joy, made you think, maybe even have made you cry by warming your heart. Maybe some of these people that have brought you such beautiful emotions... also strike you as someone who you wouldn't really want to hang out with in real life. That is all I was saying. I believe it's fairly obvious that my initial comment had no ill will in it. I apologize if it angered you. Hopefully I cleared it up for you. Cheers.

I don't doubt that one bit! When I lived in Utah, I went with some friends on the Great Salt Lake, to Antelope Island. My friend had installed a filter on his cabin cruiser, to filter out the brine shrimp (then when we got home, he flushed out the motor with fresh water...at least I think it was the motor). Anyway, the wind got up & we were being tossed like I couldn't believe! It was like being out on the ocean in a storm! I was steering at one point, & I had to hold on with one hand on the frame of the boat, the other on the steering wheel, lest I'd be tossed overboard. I never would've believed it could get like that on an inland lake!!

This makes me miss my local legend. We had this guy in Lake Elsinore who had to have been in his late 50s or early 60s but he would just cruise around town on a longboard shirtless with a tennis racket in hand. He would cruise around town looking for people to play tennis with. You could find him any given day at the court at Machado park, asking strangers to play with him. He was unbelievably kind and was known by almost everybody in town. Then one day he died, I am not sure how I heard he got hit by a car while cruising. A ton of people held a vigil for him at the Machado park tennis court where he used to play, and they hung up signs and tennis rackets in his honor. I never paid him much attention when I was a little kid, but now every time I go by Machado park I find myself looking for him. I miss seeing him cruise around town and playing tennis at the court. I wish I knew more about him too. You never know what you got until its gone

There is an understated connection between his mental health and addiction, and the freezing waters he surfs in. The mammalian dive reflex is a powerful tool that can bring someone back from a catatonic depressive state, and involves being submerged fully in icy water. There is also the benefits of icy water "shocking" someone. He has more control than the average person, but his nervous system is reacting on a massive internal scale. Lastly there's the passion. Doing this hard, dangerous thing successfully, and saving others, is so gratifying. This is all from someone once diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and using meds as well as holistic healing such as cold water. Thank you so much for sharing your story, Dan. ❤

It's funny, yesterday I watched a video from a creater I was (key word was) subscribed to have a complete melt down over the color of her f*ckin hair. She acted like it was the worst thing that ever happened to her and she decided she needed to buy an entire new wardrobe to match it... It was extremely hard to watch. I left a comment saying she really needs a reality check and even more so a change in perspective. I wish more people were like this guy and would stop taking their lives/privileges for granted. The town should designate him as a park ranger give him the title of "shore patrol" and a salary. It would be like having a year round life guard. Then the municipality can then justify building a station for him on the park land near the shore. That would allow Dan to spend all his time doing what he loves which also happens to allow him to keep an eye out for people in distress. It would benefit Dan, it would benefit the town, heck emulating a model like that could benefit the whole state. The great lakes have a long sorted record of drowning incidents. If nothing else Vice should help Dan's friends gather up the funds to build him a shore front house if you do though in box me I wanna be the first to throw some cash down on it. Unique people like Dan are a major part of why this country is so great we need more Dan's in this crazy world.

A couple years ago I was swimming with some friends on the beach of the island you see them surfing in front of in this video. We were like 15 or 16 at the time and this dude in a big van pulls up and starts surfing. He comes up to us after a while and says that there’s a spare surfboard in the back of his van and that we should go grab it. Later I found out that that was surfer Dan. He seems like a super solid dude. Side note: I also learned that day that surfing is extremely hard.

I was a Harrier plane captain and mechanic aboard the USS Nassau during Operation Allied Force in the winter of 99. We flew war pace operations all winter long in the northern Adriatic while Mod Loc’ing a show of force before bombing. I would be working on aircraft on the flight deck all night long preparing for more sorties. Freezing rain blowing right across the deck all night. I would come in to the shop with ice frozen to my forehead in a perfect mold. 18 to 20 hr days everyday. And i would get off work and head to birthing for shower, and all the infantrymen onboard would have already used up the hot water and I would have to take a cold shower. I hate winters now.

Vice literally did a story of an urban legend in my city a couple weeks ago and the guy said something similar. It was the "Milverine" story aka the Milwaukee Wolverine. He says a lot of the same things too.

I grew up along the Niagara River. Right at it's mouth. In a town called Fort Erie. In the spring, when the Lake Erie ice starts to break into chunks and float downstream towards Niagara Falls, we would get into our wetsuits/drysuits, swim out and get on those automobile sized ice burgs and go for a ride.

He really hit the nail on the head at the end there. What makes me appreciate life more is making it difficult short term to enjoy long term comfort. I started running in the winter, and now there's nothing like hot chocolate after four miles at 30 degrees and only gloves and a hat to keep my extremities warm. Life feels more real with that contrast.

Agreed. It's crazy how sometimes we can't bring ourselves to endure a little discomfort for just a little while. A couple weeks ago I went for a run in shorts while it was below freezing and dark outside 😂 feels great
