Subnautica had a near perfect map design that was never going to be recreated. Starting you off in the center of a large map, with blueprint and material progression flowing smoothly as you moved outward. Before finally going linear in the endgame. Below Zero is a smaller map, but is also rather scattershot. You bounce around all over the place to get what you need done, find the blueprints and materials. You have almost everything you need in Twisty, Thermal, and Purple, which are right next to each other. Whereas the blueprints are just randomly placed. Instead of a natural flow outward, you might have to go to the other side of the map to get an upgrade. I don’t hate the game. And I think the first game was ultimately a happy accident, rather than meticulous planning and design. But on the exploration and upgrade front, Below Zero is lacking compared to the first.

SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE VIDEO: It is entirely possible I got a one in a million glitched out encounter with the Ice Worm but near as I can tell, this kept happening each time I encountered it. The misplaced hitboxes, the really unreliable Snow Fox, and of course an incredibly passive Ice Worm that barely showed itself. Even if it was a glitched encounter, I still was thoroughly disheartened one of my favorite parts of the Early Access Below Zero got utterly ruined for me live on Stream. Apologies for the video being somewhat anti-climactic and hopefully my little end-of-video rant made up for it in some way. As I said, I'm burnt out on gameplay videos and want to focus on the next big Retrospective video, possibly multiple, so keep an eye out for those in the future. If they gonna do a Subnautica 3, I really hope they go back to the "scary" part of the first game. Below Zero wasnt bad at all, graphics were amazing and the story wasnt bad. However most of the Level design felt more annoying then scary or being a threat. The big Shrimp leviathan was for me most likely a joke in terms of danger because he just looks ridiculous. The Ice Worms were actually cool but didnt really worked that well ingame. Shadow Leviathans were also cool but their aggro mechanic were hell of frustrating. You just enter their Area and they already targeting you through terrain. Overall I did enjoy below zero in some parts. Specially in terms of building you had way more freedom. But in terms of exploring I prefer the first game more.

I'm sorry your ice worm experience was so disappointing :/ my ice worm times were actually pretty fun but the problem for me was that the damage the ice worm does is kinda.... piss. get hit by that thing once and it's like, ah, this isn't really that big a threat. the stakes just felt a bit lackluster, is all. also I have so many issues with some of bz's plot, like it's never clear why everyone left, how maida survived kharaa, considering she was alive for like 10 years before the cure went out, and especially how sector zero even has life in it, considering kharaa supposedly wiped out everything save for what the sea emperor was able to preserve in the crater??? I wish some of those things were more clear. oh well. I look forward to your next video : >

1. Why everyone left. Maida's constant minor sabotage coupled with the two pronged attack of her blowing up the compound and Sam blowing up the entrance to the frozen leviathan (and causing her own death in the process) basically turned the Sector Zero outpost into a sunk cost (not to mention the poor publicity). Altera cut their losses and pulled out altogether. 2. Maida surviving Kharaa. The same reason why everything else on the planet is surviving despite being infected. The traces amounts of enzyme in Peepers were able to stifle the progress of the virus coupled with modern medicine. 3. Arctic Life. Life, uh, finds a way. Viruses spread slower in colder environments. Perhaps this, coupled with the trace amounts of the enzyme slowly making its way through the ecosystem was enough to prevent a global mass extinction event. Or perhaps there was another Sea Emperor doing similar but wasn't found/contained by the Architects and traveled the open seas spreading what enzyme it possessed.

When I played this, I didn't know how to make the snowfox so I went through the whole snow area with the prawn suit with a grappling arm. Running away from the ice worms by Spider-Man grappling onto walls was much more fun than what using the snowfox appears to be. I'm glad I never found out how to make the snowfox now lol, beat the whole game like that.

When I was going around with my prawn suit, the ice worm didn't seem to have broken hitboxes for me and seemed to do the ground poke more than the swing, and the frequency was not rare...I had to jump boost constantly to run from it. Maybe it depends on the vehicle, since the prawn is heavier and the ice worm responds more to stronger vibrations? Or maybe it's a bug, who knows

Honestly I just took my prawn suit through the ice worm sections. It was seriously way easier doing it that way because: 1. It's sturdier, it can take more hits. 2. You don't fall out of it every time you're hit like you would on the snow fox. And 3. It may not be as fast as the snow fox, but it gets some speed and distance when you have both the grappling arm and jump jet upgrades. My exosuit both literally and metaphorically carried me through this game lol

Recently finished this game. And yes, overall the Leviathans are mostly disappointing. They are numerously spread out, attack frequently but barely do anything. They are a nuisance rather than a somewhat rare incredible encounter. Complete opposite of the first game imo. They really dropped the ball on Leviathans in this game, ice worm no exception.

I built my base right next to a chelicerate without realizing it and started eating food while my character stares out a window and i spotted a massive shadow swimming around and then it swam out of sight and another chelicerate then came from behind and scared me to death. I somehow built a base inbetween 2 of the most agressive leviathens in subnautica without realizing :)(

I completely agree, the first subnautica playthrough from you was so interesting, it felt much more like an adventure and even if there was glitches, they were funny. The terror factor was also the biggest part of the game and this is why it was so much more interesting. Below Zero really doesn't have as much of a fear factor imo. Honestly, that wasn't how my experience with the Ice Worm was at all, sure I brought the Prawn Suit so that probably made things harder for me, but it attacked me either 10 to 25 times (I did get lost for a while too) and it's a HELL of a lot scarier going in while partly blind to its newer attacks and as well as it was night like every 8 or so minutes with 20 minutes of me being like "OH FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS GRAPPLE AMAZON GRAPPLE!"

i was playing subnautica below zero and the ice worm hunted me like a monster i even try to run at it would hunt me down with the intent on killing me the thumpers helped but somethimes it still attacked me and i needed to run and hide i could maby outrun it but it always gets a few lucky hits in you cant even walk normal because the only way that it isnt going to kill me is by standing still even walking normaly its so agessive that it will chase me and i need to run and find a hideing spot and i dont even try to go there with a snowfox because it will just kill me on it its absulutly terrefieing and brings for me back the same terror i felt when i saw a reaper for the first time sneaking behind me and then i turned around and made a run for my life pod the same terror was as i was in a fight with a snowstalker that didnt let me go so i needed to kill it and as it fell to its knees the ice worm came out looked ant me and chase me and i only got away on 10 hp that was compleatly terrefieing also the reason i got away with only 10 hp is that the snowstalker also attacked me but the iceworm still did so much damege that i nearly died also i learned that they can intantly kill you luckly that didnt happen but i defently got some close calls and i found out that it is IMMORTAL what makes it even scaryer because i killed a squidshark and thought i was the king of them all and then there comes a 95 meter long worm and makes my heart explode in the end ice worms HATE me. edit:i tryed going there with my snowfox after exporing it and nearly dying i found out that going there with the snow fox makes it awsome so sethoven probibly buged his game you need to sprint right before the ice worm attacks he still gets quick attacks sometimes but its awsome having the chase sorry sethoven for a broken game.

I share your exact grievances with the snowfox and the ice worm area. I didn't play the game in early access so I don't have anything to compare it against, but I too was incredibly frustrated at the general buggyness of the scene. Constantly being knocked off the bike and just generally not having enough time to stop and get my bearings was incredibly frustrating. Really, I was dissapointed with most of the glacial setting but I won't get too far into that here. I actually ended up doing the ice worm part with just my prawn suit since, with the enhanced thrusters, it actually moves faster on land than the bike whilst also having more health, power and being immune to the ice worms disembarking move.

My ice worm experience was very different from this, and I may know why its likely that the reason it attacked infrequently is because of the snow fox itself, being a hoverbike of sorts, it seems to barely detect your presence since it doesn't create very many vibrations if any at al when I played Below Zero I got very frequent encounters from it attacking me constantly, and that was likely because I was traversing in a P.R.A.W.N suit, and not my snow fox and it was honestly fun, using the grapple arm and jet pack to try and time dodges, and if I stopped and didn't move to make repairs, it rarely attacked if at all, plus the added thrill of me playing for the first time on hardcore mode made it that much scarier, so I'd say if you ever play Below Zero again you should give it a shot in the P.R.A.W.N But I do understand that most people on first playthrough would obviously use the snow fox, so I can see the disappointment there

Below zero seems fun but it just seems like its an entirely different feeling than subnautica was. It has a better story sure but the feeling of going into open ocean knowing that it is an area where very nasty things live seems to be more unique to the first game. Each has its own pros and cons, but the first game will always bring a whole different feeling than below zero. It's hard to explain the feeling but the first one definitely brought more of a rollercoaster of thoughts, emotions, and gut reactions in my opinion.

I barely encountered it once... XD This comment can contain very small mechanic spoilers Im kinda glad I didn't use the snowfox at all during my playthrough lol I used my Prawn suit and trust me it was equal in speed if you jumped every time you hit the ground and move forward or side to side but side note it was a good feeling when I saw Ion deposits farther in. Not Just that but seeing how fast that snowfox is id say its slower by 25% due to how fast you can go WITH the grappling hook and just speed demon your way through 200ft of land in the span of 5 seconds
