Thanks for the memories, I'm 77 now from Liverpool and in '65 I played a '63 pre CBS tri colour sunburst Stratocaster with a number of groups, it was the most magical time that people will never ever see again in the world, if I could go back in time I wouldn't think twice about it and just go, I feel sad for the current generation, they will never be as free, as wealthy and happy as my generation. The problem with toady's music is what they call suicide music in the business and it really makes you want to commit suicide not be happy.

My favorite year. It was a Golden Age called the Youth Quake and it was so exciting to have experienced it. Theater, arts, fashion, music, cars, freedom, manners, class..everything good was part of that year. In America we all wanted our town to be a mini London with the hip clubs we saw across the Pond. We had the Beatles right out the gate when they shook the planet. Jackie Kennedy was our model, as well as the four original Beatle girlfriends..they were so chic and original. It took your breath away to see it all unfold . And personally, I met my husband in April of 1965, so it was doubly exciting for me. All of us are grateful for having been there.

I lived this life. It`s something unimaginable now. News papers had news that one then believed(now you do not know what to believe). At least once a day we had a useful conversation, from which you learned something. When we got our first job we knew we were on our way. Never knew the word "layed off". We met at the local Record Store, till it was time to go home, have supper and watch everyones favorit TV shore with the family, did our home work and went to bed, with a positive mind set.Only fear would have been the cold war but, that was for the adults!!

'66 is generally perceived to have been the summit of Pop music, but '65 was also a high point. It was about the writing. We teens in bands believed we could do great things like we were hearing on the radio, and many of us did have hit records, despite being only 16 or so.

OPTIMISM is a great word to describe things, a sense that anything was possible, that one could impact the world through science, education, right intention and everyone putting their heads together. What happened to change things: A war in Vietnam that would end, the assassination of political leaders, JFK/ RFK / MLK, the Watergate Scandal, an Arab Oil embargo with ensuing inflation, a worsening job and stock markets? The fact is we all expected changing the world would be easy, 1-2-3.. Presto, Change-o. We had become used to the post WW II economic expansion where there was unlimited money for science, education and there was plenty of housing. We weren't prepared to deal with how hard change really is. How hard changing our own self is, let alone changing a complex, inter-related world populated by people who did not share our values. People can be mean, selfish, violent and resist all changes. So, where does it leave us? We are forced to live realistically amongst our problems: over-population, wars, ecological crises, political extremism, social division and we are still forced to confront ourselves, our own fears. However, we are also people with choices including the choice to love, to learn, to make wise choices and choose wise leaders.

Pop music and fashion had arrived. The British invasion was in its second year. Swinging London riveled New York and Paris as the place to be. Skeptics who called the Beatles a passing fad were having second thoughts after the song Yesterday was released. In a few months, Rubber Soul would be released, leaving no doubt. Astronauts were doing space walks - the planned moon landing didn't seem so far away (and it wasn't). The US committed ground troops in Vietnam, a huge foreign policy blunder that divided the country and cost close to sixty-thousand American lives. Like all years, 1965 was both a good year and one not so good. I turned 16 and got my driver's license.

It's okay to reflect on the past, but definitely NOT HEALTHY, to dwell in it. For the music comparison??? Yes, that music movement was groundbreaking for the times, but today's (past 20+ years) music, is definitely MUCH, MUCH BETTER!!! And, some of the BEST music🎵 🎶 composed in history, is presently, right now!!! Unfortunately, it's human nature to preside, in a time frame where, we were young and safe. The music of those times, goes along subconsciously with that attitude, and THAT'S HOW, middle-aged, and older peeps get stuck, living in the past. Plus , they are unaware that, that music🎵 🎶, ain't copistetic, anymore. Go to anyone's who's older, house and/or party, and ask them to put some KOOL music on, and see what you get. It'll be more than likely, that you'll have to unfortunately deal with, the beat-down music, depicted within this documentary😔. In the 21st. century, no less🙄🤭!!!

Thank you for posting this. which is beautifully put together, and shows the joy of those times. I love the black & white stills, especially of children playing. I grew up in Essex, England, and I was 7 in 1965. Culturally, I agree they were special times we were lucky and privileged to grow up in. However, I think nostalgia can be misleading. Personally, my family life was terrible, there were also gangs in my area, there was much sexism, racism, etc. In the UK class distinction was stark. In parts of the US there was segregation. In South Africa there was apartheid. The world was really far from perfect! The process that really began in the '60s led us to where we are today - and that's not all bad either. Think about it!

I was 17 and looking forward to high school graduation in May. My college acceptance letter came in the mail, and I was on top of the world. Some of my friends were going to college. Some were drafted into the Army; they knew Vietnam could be in their "college". As Charles Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities, "“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way..."

I like the way you have clustered the music scenes, fashion, world events, street photos, etc for April 1965. - it helps to give the flavor of the time (exuberant and positive). April 1965 I was a 20 yr old college student working that Summer as a waitress on 5th Avenue, Manhattan NY.

mac - you MUST buy Ian MacDonald's book Revolution in the Head - 500 pages of every dang Beatle song reviewed and explored both technically and otherwise AND a section in back of parallel things of the time all chrono - Politics, Sports, Science, Sociology, Entertainment of the entire decade so you can easily put together a picture of the decade in chrono if you didn't live it in real time like we boomers did. He does the BEST job of conveying life pre-Beatles and of course the culture shock of after. I have 100s of Beatle books - used to work at Capitol and trust me, Ian's book is THE book if you had to own ONE Beatle book. 🎸

I think one of the most important points brought up here was the difference in the amount of social interaction between people back then. There were no mobile phones, no internet, with maybe one telephone in a household (probably stuck in a hallway somewhere) where the rest of the family could hear what you were saying. If you wanted to talk to your friends, you went out and met them in person. People hung out on the streets a lot more. Life happened outside.

Indeed it did, outside with our friends all day except for when we had to go home for lunch then dinner. In summer back out again until it got dark. Whole communities of families all pretty much the same, great times.

April 1965 was a memorable time. Iwas 12 in the 6th grade Ct. USA. I bought into the music scene in a big way. On the advice of older musicians I decidrd to play bass guitar and obtained my 1st bass and amp in june 1965.Today I'm 71 and still perform on bass. It all started in 1965 for me.Acts like Wayne Fonbender and Hermin made me laugh. But other UK acts were extremly influential. I don't think I need to name them, you guys know exactly who I am reffering too. By April of65 I had seen Peter Paul Mary thanx to a very kind Paul Colby who allowed me to see them at his club acompanied by my father. Next was the UK's Dave Clarke 5 and in Augest 64 the Beatles at Forrest Hill Stadium. I eas 10 and 11 for these.1965 was the starting point. From that point forward, way too much happened to me than I could possibly explain here. Not even close!! Your "65" doc was great. Glad to have Freewheeling on board. That's it!!

I was so young I could barely remember any of this, but dug it more than what was going on a decade later. Just had more verve than what was in the charts, with very few exceptions, at least unil punk rock and new wave gave the scene a much-needed kick in the backside, including bands that were very mod influenced. It's been my style to this day, with my own twists, and I still get a lot of compliments for it, even as an older geezer.

It's all gone now. It's all negative low vibe noise now. Hopeful and romantic times were everywhere then. Now its dead. Thug rap, hip hop and lame pop crap have dumbed down the hearts and minds of humanity. No romance, no gentle caress, just dominance and materialism. So sad how culture has spiraled downward out of beauty, harmony and a desire for goodness and happiness for all.

The music still sounds great. The attitude of society at the time seems a bit naive though. The Vietnam war, civil unrest, race riots, assassinations were also happening, at least for Americans. It must have been a very interesting world to live in. It feels like that last hoorah of youth before waking up to the cold reality of the adult world.

In my little British Commonwealth country all was still post WW2 positivity except for Americans testing their damn atom bombs down our way even though we did not know how bad it REALLY was, we knew it wasn't good. Some of our armed forces went to Vietnam, some didn't come back, but there were no social problems except a few anti nuclear protests (we are still nuclear free and no nukes allowed to be here in any way.). It was an amazing time, so much innovation and teenagers had a voice of their own, for the first time. Unemployment may have existed, but as it was a fairly shameful 'condition' because jobs were very plentiful, I don remember knowing any unemployed people then. It really was the best of times.

Much of that music is still quite easy to listen to, and what is discussed here is just a small part of what had come, and what was still to come just in the '60s. This was before the Beatles 'Rubber Soul,' 'Revolver,' and 'Sgt. Pepper'. Before the Stones 'Let It Bleed'. Before Hendrix, the Doors, Joplin, Led Zeppelin, and so much more. Groups like the Yardbirds and Cream aren't even mentioned here. It is doubtful that any significant percentage of today's pop music will come close to being listened to as much even 20 years from no, let alone 60.
