The Ideal Section of the Lincoln Highway | A Documentary

The ideal Section on the Lincoln Highway was once known as the most advanced piece of roadway in the world. This one and a third mile stretch of road led to a transportation revolution. Join us as we learn the history of roads in America and how an Indiana businessman led a group to create a transcontinental highway and eventually the most advanced engineered road in the country.

I am from Lancaster, PA an I have lived alone the original King's Highway aka the Old Philadelphia Pike which ends at the Lincoln Highway aka Rte. 462 through Lancaster City most of it is still US Route 30 Lincoln Highway, I was lucky enough to take a road trip vacation in 2013 the 100th Anniversary of the Lincoln Highway from Lancaster to Bedford PA crossing over the mountains in PA instead of thru them on the PA Turnpike in my brand new at the time 2013 Mini Roadster S Convertible top down. First road trip after I became a widow, It was awesome. The Flight 93 Memorial is along the Lincoln Highway and also the Quecreek Mine Rescue site about 10 miles west from Flight 93 Memorial. Many farmers then had repainted murals about the Lincoln Hwy. on their barns along the road. I did have to exit the Lincoln Highway for the western most part of my trip to Fayette County, PA, but it was a wonderful trip, glad I was able to do it by myself.

A young lieutenant on that military convoy that attempted to traverse the still nascent Lincoln Highway would later draw inspiration from the German autobahns he would utilize as Supreme Allied Commander during WWII to push for the creation of the Interstate Highway System when he became President in the 50s. His name? Dwight Eisenhower.

There should be a lincoln highway passport system in which travelers can purchase a passport to collect stamps, and businesses can purchase and register rubber stamps to stamp the passport (with a qualified purchase or donation.) Then, associations can have promotions to reward travelers who collect a series of stamps in their passport. The passport should include a route map and a link to find businesses with registered LH stamps.

And here we are. Watching our once revolutionary road system crumble as road funds are diverted to other things. With almost half the country on some form of assistance and less than half actually paying federal taxes, I won't hold my breath waiting for our valuable roads to receive the attention they so desperately need.
