I just don’t feel like it’s good writing to have him beat her with the brush. There are so many alternative ways to show Tedros is replacing her mother, without being sooo literal. It’s way too on the nose to say “hey, get the hairbrush and let me hit you so you go back to normal”! Clearly they chose to write it that way for shock value. But the most shocking choice isn’t always the clever choice. The writing there wasn’t clever imho, and it kinda put me off continuing this show, which is a shame bc that dinner table scene 🎬 👌 !! Does anybody else get the sense that this show thinks it’s way cleverer and deeper than it actually is? I’m finding it quite indulgent, pretentious, and shallow. Just my honest opinion, if other people love it, good for them but after that hairbrush scene, I think I’ve seen all I need to see from this show and it’s poor plot development 😅

That's because certain talents are inheritable to a degree. Basically, the creative part of your brain is to a certain degree hereditary. I'm an illustration graduate who's studying writing, and my maternal family is filled with artists. Singing, dancing, writing, painting, ceramics, photography, I have family members active in almost every creative field imaginable. Sam Levinson seems like one of the rare souls who inherited zero talent outside of his visual style.
@rafagnys3193 Жыл бұрын
@@inferiorinferno8859 I think a part of it is that the job of an actor is public-facing - connection may get you through the door, but at the end of the day people are either going to want to watch you or they won't. It just seems like this show doesn't know what it wants to be (kinda what you get when you scrap an almost finished show, rewrite it and reshoot it). The writers/director don't seem to have a clear vision of how they want to portray the characters (in one scene the main heroine has a spine and can stand up for herself, in the other she is a complete wimp; and are we supposed to see Tedros as a dangerous strong character, or a comical despicable cult leader, or is it just the weeknd's bad acting?). Lily's character doesn't have any qualities, except for her "mother arch", that can evoke deep sympathy towards her from the viewers. Like why should I care for what is going to happen with this character aka watch the show till the end?

The Weeknd just can't act. If an "actor" has to release statements to explain what his acting was intended to do, how we were supposed to feel or see their character, etc. then they just didn't do their job well. So we see how cringe he is in reality but it will take her to get over herself in order to get there with us. And she in my opinion is actually aware of how bad and cringe he is. But she’s just letting it pass and get what she wants out of this; get the album done and have some fun distraction. In fact, I believe she’ll end up being the real mastermind with a twist. On the album cover topic, Miley Cyrus comes to mind with the glitter goop cover. Forgot the name of the album but she's been pretty shocking for a nasty pop idol I geuss?

@@DavaniGrant she truly was. I just think it's funny how they think it was a shocking idea when we have an irl example. But Miley is my queen, she wears shock factor well.

If someone said to Sam Levinson: “you are not allowed to use the verb fuck” he wouldn't write scripts anymore. Because, WHY is he so addicted to use this word in EVERY PHRASE OF EVERY CHARACTER?? 😭😭😭 It's so repetitive that annoys me

I think the show is based on true life events that can happen in real life like the emotionally,physically,sexually abuse/control narcissistic man who needs to take control of his girlfriend and all he wants is sexual control and he can make his girlfriend want more even though she feels embarrassed and yet feel good at the same time.she’s naive and can’t leave I’ve been in an abusive and emotional relationship before and I’ve been that naive like o he cares he’ll change he just needs time and u are afraid and it takes a long time to get away So i in a way understand the relationship between Jocelyn and tendras and how hard it is to get away Definitely don’t relate to the sexual tension between them though But what he’s doing as a cult leader it happened in real life like NXIVM and shows how mental health and childhood trauma happens in this world I wanted to watch because of jennie kim is in it even if short scenes in each episode
