Whilst I await and invite comments on my Opinion, let me express first and factually that all the groups Ika, ikwerre , ukwuani, Abohs, Igbo etc cannot deny a lineage or trace to the Igbo ancestry given the make ups of culture , tradition and language content. That said there is a natural course that proceeds the genesis of distinct sub groups over time as seen in various other ethnicities accross the globe and locally also. so that for example an American is no longer referred to as British today even if language and Ancestry point to His Anglo saxon origin. Neither can an American deny this Ancestry. Distinct subgroups take on a new Identity slight or major over time due to factors which for the most part we do not have control over as century old migrations, alliances, affiliations, wars, disputes, politics etc. It is not uncommon for such distinct groups to refer themselves or be externally reffered to as the case may be by a different Identity; neither is it a bad thing but can be beautiful depending on how you accept it; this in principle . Whilst two or three out of say seven cousins today bear sur names retained from 5 generations away the rest may choose more recent surnames. Regardless we still celebrate each other as cousins with close ties. It is allowed. This is where while I appreciate a move to Unify the offshoots of this Ancestry and remind all of this Ancestry and in fact celebrate this Ancestry and our common kinship, I will also caution that the best way to approach this is to celebrate these unique distinctions, by manner of celebrating the uniqueness of each in language , tradition , culture etc by a consistent embrace and appreciation of the diversity, with each given the attention and celebration it desires in terms of Identity , much like Engineering say is studied under different fields but under the root discipline of Engineering. There is great beauty and more in diversity and it is a blessing from God not a bad thing. An approach other than this I am afraid can instigate further divisions , rancour, alienation etc. The Urhobos and Itsokos , the Efiks and Ibibios , the Yorubas and Itsekiris are local examples. Each celebrating each other without a desire to impose origin or lineage of one over the other or assismilate one into or begin a supremacy march over the other not withstanding that there is usually a group far larger than the other. Most of their words and phrases are either essentially same or slightly differ in pronounciations and syntax which defines the group distinctions. They celebrate each other not withstanding. Life is beautiful depending on how you see or accept it and thus worth celebrating in all its aspects. Diversity is also one of the most beautiful and natural manifestations of the Supreme Creator in the proceeding infinity of His Wisdom and Power and Grand plan and not a bad thing depending though on how you see it.
