Absolutely loved the illustrations from the JUNGLE BOOK and De Becque's animal renderings (something I am particularly attracted to). And, as I keep droning on about myself in these comment pages, I'm always struck by how many of these highlighted illustrators are masters of such diverse mediums in their careers. Craftsmanship and basic skills of drawing and painting always rises to the top and De Becque is a perfect example. And, if I may confess, I'm more attracted to the mastery of his figure drawings as opposed to the erotic nature of the images. Drawing figures is hard! ;-) De Becque knows what he's doing. Anyway, thanks again, Pete, for highlighting another master illustrator. Hope all is well with you. Cheers!
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hi Doug and thanks as ever for the comments. I must admit when it comes to the erotic I'm more a Gil Elvgren sort of chap. Or Kremos -have you heard of him? If not well worth a google. @@petebeard Well, except for the latest cooler days (26° C° ) it can get bloody hot here (36°+ last week) so Mrs. B may have the right idea. Though a refreshing G & T helps. Extraordinary, that an artist so versatile and so immensely talented should have become obscure. The images of illustrations for Le fleurs du mal instantly bring to life Baudelaire's poetry. His Jungle Book is very different from others I have seen. yet somehow more applicable, catching the spirit, the feel of the stories. (With apologies to other artists, whose work I am not familiar with). Delving into a different world - watching this was like Alice's journey down the rabbit hole. Gorgeous works. Such elegant compositions and intoxicating color harmony. Each one on point without fail. Thank you for making me aware of my newest favorite illustrator. This, incidentally, is just what I needed to see, as I've taken it upon myself to do s series of illustrations for each track on an old record of lovely life-affirming and lushly orchestrated, never-condescending songs on an album my mom used to play me in my formative years , and knew I wanted to avoid anthropomorphizing any animals where they appear. Like De Becque did with the Jungle Book, it would be best, I think, to make the animals believable, as if the events in the songs' lyrics actually transpired - even if, for example, a turtle speaks - since the spirit of the record overall is so honest and never patronizing or underestimating the intelligence of its young audience. Anyways, I could very well have kept this ti myself after "thanx for clue-ing me in to DeBecque"... Just a weirdo thinking aloud, and, nevertheless, may as well post it. No harm done. No shame in my comment game, despite the digressions and self-indulgence. Thanks again!

Another obscure gem. An artist with so much quality and so prolific and yet bafflingly unknown to the public. You remarked on this fact in the video, have you come to any conclusions as to why such talented artists remained so little known by the public. France, in particular, was known for it's Graphic Arts.
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks a lot. And although I've given it considerable thought I really don't know why so many have become so forgotten. And in this instance it's surprising as the French are usually among the better nations at keeping their past culture alive.
@mesolithicman164 Жыл бұрын
@@petebeard Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they are illustrating someone else's ideas, and in that regard 'not really' the creative force behind a work of literary art. Occasionally some illustrators do receive more recognition, Beardsley and Rackham spring to mind, both were significant for their influence over many of their contemporaries, so their roles as stylistic originators may be why they received more acclaim than is usual in the field of illustration. And then we have cartoonists - in some senses regarded as inferior to 'proper' illustrators - who DO get broader public recognition, I'm thinking of people like Thelwell or Ronald Searle here, who's art expressed a distinctive worldview, in a sense they were both author and illustrators of their work. Heath Robinson is known more for eccentric gadgetry than his excellent skills as a versatile artist. So, three factors. The assumption that that illustrators are secondary to the real creator of a piece of work. That many illustrators, though skilled, are rarely groundbreaking stylistically, and that most have nothing original to say. The exceptions, Searle etc, proving the rule. Apologies for an exercise in 'thinking aloud' but I think those are my conclusions. And just to say, I don't think it's fair, people should know about John Minton, Eric Ravillious, Rockwell Kent and their like, because illustration was and is a necessary means of an artist supporting himself and his family. And good art whether in a gallery or on the printed page always has the power to lift our soul, even if only for a moment.

@@mesolithicman164 Hello again and thanks for your observations about the lamentable second class status of illustrators. Personally, I try to focus on attempting to redress the balance through the channel, and hope (probably in vain) that it increases awarenes and appreciation of at least some of them.

If it counts, I'll not be forgetting about Maurice any time soon. Quantity and quality.
