Written in the 15th century around the same time as the invention of the printing press, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis was printed in several languages and became a bestseller. It is widely regarded as the most important devotional work in Catholic Christianity and one of the most-read devotional works next to the Bible. It undoubtedly helped many Christian mystics in that era and beyond to develop a closer relationship to Christ on their quest for mystical experiences. Furthermore, it was also a source of personal inspiration and support for Dr. Carlos Eire during a difficult time in his childhood, which he shares with us in this episode. If you would like to order a copy of Dr. Carlos Eire's new book, "They Flew: A History of the Impossible," you can order a copy HERE (Yale University Press) or HERE (Amazon).

Hello Alberto and Dr. Eire, Thank you so much for the Christian Mysticism Podcast. I am very thankful for your time, work and generosity of your knowledge. Do you recommend a particular edition of The Imitation of Christ? There are some with a modern translation and translations with annotations. I also want to thank you so much for sharing how you first came to have this book. "When I left Cuba without my parents you were only allowed to take two changes of clothing; one coat, one hat and one book. Nothing else. So of course my parents picked out a book for me and my brother. We both got the same book. We each got our own copy. The Imitation of Christ. I was 11 years old. My brother was 14.........I outgrew all my clothes. I outgrew my hat. The only thing I had left that physically connected me with my parents was this book......" Carlos Eire Thank you Dr. Eire and Alberto. From: Lorraine
