my problem with 2 was the blocky weird dark thing that I didn't know what it was in the foreground

Yeah, makes sense. Might come from the fact that the thumbnail was maybe too small though. In the "normal size" image you kind of grasp easily it's just some decoration items. Although on a primary reading, theoretically, the eye will just bypass what is dark in the foreground and just look at the rest of the image so it shouldn't be a problem. But thanks for pointing it out! Means even out of focus objects should either be really out of focus so that it doesn't bother the viewer, or understandable enough so that the viewer quickly moves on to something else in the image.

@@HoromaStudio yeah, I think it's the readability that caused me a blip - plus I do think the fog effect is a bit too strong!

@@spridgejuice yep, image 2 would need further adjustments for sure. Bear in mind the idea is that option 1 and option 2 are quick in-house sketches that wouldn't even be presented to a client. They might actually not even be rendered and would just live in the Frame Buffer until option 15 emerges and do get rendered, then postprocessed properly for a meeting :) But yes you're completely right, fog would need to be much more subtle so that it catches the light, but doesn't look like we're in a dusty space :D

Love it. Subscribed. Is framing the image with objects (image 1) always a bad thing? Do we always want the space to be open and avoid placing items and features on the edges? I hope i make sense.

Thanks for the kind comment and subscription :) Channel is a bit less active than it used to be so feel free to check out older videos, but I'll do my best to release a few videos this year :) Regarding your question : 1 - No, you can definitely use a column to frame a space, the only thing I would try to do is to have enough contrast and that this element has enough "presence" (meaning not be 10px wide) so that it doesn't fall into the "edge flickering" category. What you notice though ,between option 1 and 2 on the right edge, is that option 2 looks much brighter and open than option 1, because it doesn't have that vertical element that closes the view. But again, in this case it's really down to details and what effect you want to create I think. 2 - In composition there are very very few "no go" situations. What matters is really to be conscious of what is happening. Edge flickering (having stuff on the very edge of an image) in itself is not bad, but it has a noticeable impact. So if it is your goal to create tension on the edge of the frame in order to catch the viewer's attention momentarily, then it's a good tool. But if your goal is to straightforwardly draw the attention in the middle of the canvas, then it will be a problem. Just as a side note, sometimes if you want to "compensate" (or balance) a big object in the image with a smaller one, edge flickering can help because even a small object will have a noticeable visual weight because it's near the edge, thus can create a nice relationship with a bigger object that would be centered. There are many classical paintings that rely on this approach (you can check out Claude Gellée's/Le Lorrain or even Canaletto that tend to have detailed foreground with elements (often people) being placed very near the edge of the canvas). Hope that clarifies/helps!

@@HoromaStudio Thank you so much for this elaborate answer. That definitely answers my question. It’s impressive how much you know. I love that you encourage to look at paintings also. My side note: I just realised I bought your Photoshop Plugin some time ago. Great stuff. I will check your older videos for sure.
