When I was maybe 3 or 4 years old somewhere around 1989 1990 my aunt and grandma took me with to see the st louis arch. I thought it was amazing lol we went up in these rickety bucket cage things that wobbled through what looked like an access shaft and then arrived at the top in the little finished area with carpet and windows. I remember running from window to window being amazed to be so high and see so much. When we went back down there was an art exhibit at the base which just added to the wonder for me seeing all the different pieces. I loved it and still at nearly 40 remember very much of that visit. While I didn't know the unfortunate but also unsurprising history behind its construction until this video being able to visit and go up in the arch will always be a fond memory for me Thanks the awesome video and as always fantastic hosting Eric - one of the best sign offs too lol

An idea for a future idea. Can you do an episode on the Domus Aurea which was Nero’s golden palace? I think it would make a great episode.

I was born in St. Louis, but moved away when I was very young, so I had no memories of it, let alone of the Arch. I visited a few years ago and made sure to stop by the Arch. It was beautiful. 10/10, would recommend.

Sad that the Interstate has led to the downfall of St. Louis and so many other cities. It was just outside St. Louis that construction on the Interstate first began.

I like your acknowledgments of the writers. I lived in St Louis from the mid 80s to mid 1990s. Great baseball town with a world class University and Hospital, (Washington U.) But still declining. Monsanto was bought by another company, same thing with Bush brewing.

@@Dyl6886 I agree. Chicago City is massive and full of life, St. Louis City is a depressed warzone with a few Hipster spots with neat art and nightlife stuff. But I wouldn't want to live in either city. As far as the metro goes, I'd take St. Louis metro over Chicago metro any day of the week.

StL should have never built the arch. If we hadn't, we would still have a great connection to the awesome and historic riverfront. However, Mound City is still the MOST underrated city in the world. The Lou's urban fabric was built at the time of pedestrians and trolleys, making it an amazing place to live or visit still. We just need to get serious about prioritizing the restoration of our stolen trolley network ,and outsiders will realize how amazing it is here in St. Louis! ⚜ :]

IF only ppl in US wanted to ever visit St. Lious... Spoiler: Most would rather not. It ranks like in top 5 or 10 of highest crime cities. Up there with Detroit, Atlanta, SanFran, Chicago, Milwaukee, NYC, D.C. Maybe if Detroit builds 2x arches and paints them yellow, it'll help save the city.

You say the windows are small but show nothing of the interior with people looking out the windows to show scale. The size of the windows are fine. Did the person who wrote this ever personally go up the Arch?
@jeremymontgomery93542 күн бұрын
Normally, regarding the arch I'd say there is nothing there worth seeing, but you are correct that proper journalism requires personal knowledge of statements presented as facts.
@yankeecrazy9Күн бұрын
Yes, I have been up in the Arch, several times. As someone who is 6'1", I have to lean pretty far over in order to see out of the windows, so I stand by what I wrote. The common visitor complaint about the size of the windows is drawn directly from the source material I used (see my comment above.)

If the arch is a monument to anything, it memorializes corrupt and disastrous mismanagement. As a recent transplant to STL, my advice to any would-be tourists is, skip the arch and STL completely. There is literally nothing worth seeing in this town.
