Buddha's teaching is pretty simple and straight forward. The more you minimize the difference between expectation and reality, the closer you are to enlightenment. Much of our suffering is caused by the disparity between expectation and reality. Close the gap, and better you are. And, I think nihilism is already encompassed within the idea of enlightenment. Because the reality is that Its all for nothing. So in that sense nihilism can be a gateway to enlightenment but sometimes people just get caught up in the void of nihilism and fail to see the light of hope beyond that. They put the very idea of existence in the witness box and cause havoc and chaos. I have not thought much about these two though but they seem to be integrated in a way.
