जिस प्रकार भारत में चार धाम स्थित हैं, उसी प्रकार चार दिशाओं में चार मठ हैं।
यह चारों मठ भारतीय संस्कृति और वेदों के केंद्र हैं।
इन चार मठों की स्थापना सातवीं शताब्दी में जन्मे, शंकर का अवतार कहे जाने वाले आदि शंकराचार्य ने की थी।
सातवीं और आठवीं शताब्दी में, जब सनातन धर्म की प्रतिष्ठा जैन और बौद्धों के कारण क्षीण हो गई थी, तब केरल में जन्मे मात्र छह वर्ष के बालक आदि शंकर ने पूर्व से पश्चिम और उतर से दक्षिण तक यात्राएं कर, शास्त्रार्थ कर, भाष्य लिख कर वैदिक सनातन धर्म की पुनर्स्थापना की।
CHAR MATH are considered to be the most popular Hindu pilgrimage circuit in INDIA, which are believed to be the abodes of Gods and Goddesses. Char Math, as CHAR DHAAM are located in the four directions. The Math / Peeth are stated to represent Indian culture and VEDAS, in their true spirit.
SHANKARACHARYA established four MATH / PEETH, at four directions of the country.
When Sanatana Dharm went through a down phase, after Buddhism and Jainism, SHANKARACHARYA appeared! Born in Kerala, at the mere age of six, ADI SHANKARA travelled throughout the country from East to West and North to South, and established the prominence of Vedic Sanatana Dharma again. He travelled to propagate his philosophical ideas and beliefs through discourses, with other thinkers. SHANKARACHARYA is credited with unifying and constructing the significant currents of thought in HINDUISM.
It's not hyperbolic to assert that these CHAR MATH are the foundation pillars of HINDUISM. These CHAR MATH are believed to be dedicated to the four VEDAS. In order to understand the unifying tradition of HINDUISM, it becomes significant to know much about the MATH in the country
