Internet animations (often) have so much passion and creativity put into them that it's a breath of fresh air from the typical shows and humor that gets aired on TV. Whether it's surreal, comical, insightful or emotional, They'll always be the peak of animation to me, and they deserve all the support they can get.

The realm of web animation proves that the Internet is capable of giving independent animators who put more effort and passion to their projects more creative liberties than TV/film studios would ever be. It's no wonder why Newgrounds is relevant for giving us experimental and fresh content when it comes to cartoons and Helluva Boss finally achieved the limelight it deserves.

I grew up and saw all these animators be successful from the ground up. I didn't see the struggles. I figured they were just talented and I was not. I am now about to be 30 years old. I don't have shit to my name. 2,000 subscribers to a channel full of dead end content. My ambitions have always been short sighted, and my expectations way too high. I spent the past 20 years wanting to create something amazing, and the past 10 years thinking I was a failure, and doing nothing. I've learned that I've done a lot of things right. I am not normal. No path makes sense til it works. I wasn't drawing since I was a kid, I have no art or film experience firsthand, outside pretty much garbage, and I have no connections... I consider my lack of initiative my first failure. Watching these videos reminds me that it's not too late to get back up. And I think I'm ready. I'm ready to spend the next 10 years doing...something.

Same here, I am 32 years old, and recently began to do youtube animations. Spent most of my life dealing with extreme depression, I had no freedom to take any initiative. This really showhs how much the industry has changed from the classic media that was broadcasted on TV's are now upgraded into the now, modern technology era, as well as the age of the internet. Our generation has come to bear witness some of the most creative and influential pieces of animation and media, whether from the cartoon like stories of Edd's World and asdf movie's or by the passion projects like Battington tapes. I don't think we would be able to have come across any of these wonderful creators that have shared their ideas onto the internet and making them into reality. TLDR: Internet changed media and animation. Yipee This has to be one of your best works Skipper. Love it!

there's one area of online animation you didn't talk about, but probably because it is a bit obscure. There's one (or two) corner(s) of online animation that is made by usually young animators or experienced animators with little to no budget that have made what i can describe: 'talking wolf' or 'talking animal' series that usually have graphic / mature writing and plots. With the success of the Warrior Cats books, a lot of animations were made by fans of the franchise and were and are still very popular in the KZbin animation community. That corner of the internet inspired a lot of young people to self-produce stories they came up with and post it to KZbin and have become a place for stories that are right in the middle between children's animation and adult animation. Warrior Cats is basically a bunch of wild cats living in the forest, they are segeregated into four clans and live by a 'warrior code'. There is a lot of death and violence and for years fans have wanted and pleaded for a TV series or movie because of how popular the books are, I've heard rumors of Warrior Cats being picked up by studios, but because Warriors is graphic with talking animals and a large amount of characters, it is basically 'impossible' for studios to want to greenlight a show/movie that is not family-friendly and will not appeal to the general adult audience either. In my theory, this is because of the Watership Down (i like to call it 'The Watership Down Effect') film adaptation in 1978. The film is a cult classic but was very controversial when it was released, it traumatised a lot of children and angered a lot of parents because it was accidentally marketed as a 'general audience' film because it had cute bunnies (the marketing team probably didn't even watch the whole movie lol), but it had extreme animal cartoon gore and violence. Because of this (and also merchandise reasons), studios are basically unwilling to accept and greenlight stories that depict talking animals in mature / violent storylines. KZbin Indie projects examples: Cow of The Wild & My Pride ( TribbleofDoom) Unknown Blood (Fluffylovey) Azurehowl (Azurehowlshilach) Alcatraz (JudgePikachu)

This is exactly why I'm so passionate about art and animation. Not because I have a genius idea for a tv show that I want to see the light of day or a story I think needs to be heard, but because I know others do. And having this talent takes a lot of time and energy to craft and make it look appealing to an audience or network. There's so many people out there with amazing ideas but no resources to get those ideas out onto paper. That's what I want to do. I want to help someone shape their idea and maybe give them the voice they deserve. But that's a ways ahead of me. I can't even finish animations I do for fun yet 😭

Internet entertainment is great because it allows for variety. Great, great variety, like this video essay of yours. It didn't get turned into an article on a newspaper or website that many will ignore. it turned into this video that I'm only 7 minutes in and I can already tell how much was put into it. This is fantastic. So yeah. The internet has a very different system, but one that allows independent artists to do so much more, and not sell their souls to a bunch of business people who get to decide the future of said artists. There are so many things on the internet that are so unbelievably refreshing that I'm pretty sure would never be greenlit by higher ups due to not following trends. Everywhere at the End of Time, The Mandela Catalogue, Undertale, etc. I love it, and it's always a good thing that it's there because the path straight into mainstream media is not for everybody.

THANK YOU so much for this video, you have inspired me greatly and I have a more positive outlook on internet content creation and potential fame (even if I don't make it to the mainstream) as an aspiring 3d animator! I was thinking of watching a Rooster Teeth retrospective soon after, because I'm interested in the evolution of 3D Indie animation, Red vs Blue and RWBY (even though I am not too familiar with the shows themselves, but I know of a hbomberguy RWBY video) are meant to be important to that side of internet creativity, regardless of if they (the shows and inevitably the studio) fell off or not... heheh I'm also looking forward to Accursed Farms' work (like THE MOVIE) as he is so funny and inspirational (and started in the same place as Rooster Teeth, ALA Freeman's Mind and Civil Protection!) Edit: obviously, the more modern example of 3D Animation getting big for me was Kevin Temmer and What's the matter Martha, Delete This Tweet and working as an animator on GLITCH (which I have seen episode 1 of TADC and liked!)

I feel like it doesn't matter how well the jokes are timed and delivered, or how impactful the stories are, or how nuanced an original setting or moral can be if a network doesn't want to greenlight it. Do I try something good that will be too original and risky to pick up, or do I rehash some garbage IP to sell more marketable plushies?

11:57 This song always makes me tear up. It's so beautiful. Loved the video, but just wanted to point out that if you haven't listened to "Old Black Train" from Over the Garden Wall, you need to.

watching this as I'm working on my own long big animation honestly we're living in the golden ages of indie and small studios, the multimillion dollar productions are a joke when you compare the results to these projects, the whole machine has been dead for a while. So I'm looking forward to keep seeing these small creators kick behemoths ass ✊

You should look into Glitch Productions. They went from a teen (and later his brother) making Mario meme videos every weekend to starting their own indie animation studio with two-and-a-half completed shows under their belts, while still producing Mario meme videos.

I feel a huge issue with internet animation is nepotism, especially from people who think they don't have it. Like they think they know what's up which in turn makes them up their own asses. These I think Zach and Mike are anything but up their own asses. Yeah, they were at one point. Zach sucked in sleepycast but he became a lot more humble and insightful and funny the more work he got. You just make shit and you see what happens, that's how it goes and it makes me wanna just, make shit no matter how hard it might be.

This video is hella important, and it’s inspired me to keep trying my hardest. For me it’s wanting to start music in my own home, my own sound. I would like to be able to make my own money from it someday, I hate my job, but it’s not as important as making what I visualize myself as in audio form. Because as a visual artist, the lack of noise isn’t enough.

That was increibly well made and makes me positive for the future of future animators and who knows, maybe even try to do animations, of course i doubt i'll be on the same level as the animators mention on the video but i could do something for fun Also i hate to be really mean, but do you have a list of the songs you used for the video?
