There’s one thing silver dimes can do that the rest of the denominations can’t do by themselves. You can’t go wrong when purchasing any kind of junk silver but dimes are my personal preference and I’ll discuss why.
Disclaimer- I am not a financial advisor, I’m just a guy passionate about gold, silver and numismatics, please do not make any purchases or sales based on my videos. What I say in this video is just my opinion.

I like 90% Washington quarters pre 1964. I have 3 5 gallon buckets filled and leveled off to the top. Mathematically each bucket has roughly 23,400 quarters in each one. I worked back in the 60'S at a large self serve car wash. The vacuums were loaded with silver dimes in the waste pails of the vacuums. I collected thousands of them and silver mercury and Roosevelt dimes. I worked there for 8 years as manager.

Years ago, I purchased a dime storage box that has 50 slots for 50 tubes(rolls) of dimes to store my dime stock. I have been buying handfuls at a time each month for years with each pay check. I have just been loading them into the tubes until they were filled. Mission accomplished this week, all tubes full! So I decided I would began to count each tube to make sure there were exactly 50 coins in each roll. Guess what? There were an average of around 53 coins per roll! I asked my local coin shop WTF? He told me he sells them by the coin but buys them by weight because over time these coins lose metal weight from constant wear. So, keep that in mind.
@StatesideStash

Nice video! Good info. I love Constitutional or "junk" silver! However, my understanding of the term "junk" silver is that it refers to 1964 and earlier US dimes, quarters, and halves that have no extra numismatic value, and only hold their intrinsic value based on their 90 percent silver content. Not because they have 90 percent silver content rather than the .99 percent or higher found in modern silver coins or bullion. It goes back to coin collecting and numismatic valuation.
@marianmoses9604
@marianmoses9604 11 күн бұрын
That is correct. I have been a numismatist for 54 years and your explanation was accurate. The dude who made the video must have pulled his alternate explanation out of his ass because I’ve never heard that from anyone, anywhere, at any time and I’ve been messing around with silver since 1970.

Some time ago I sold a few things that I no longer needed or wanted and took the cash to my local coin store and just said turn it into real money. I got some random rounds, a half dollar, quarter, and couple dimes. It was actually the beginning of me getting into junk silver. I now have many different tubes and bags of junk silver sitting in my safe. Now when I show up at the coin store with an envelope there they just ask how the yard sale went.

My relative owned a candy store in upper NYC. Back in the early 80s he realized that the new clad coinage would be worth much less than the 90% silver so he began putting away anything pre-1965. In the later 80's he gave me a very heavy box as a gift, which turned out to contain....70 rolls of pre 1965 quarters, 49 rolls/ of mercury and roosevelt dimes and 30 rolls of franklin and walking liberty half dollars. I disposed of the halves after checking for numismatic value and traded them in at a coin shop for 4/$50 gold American Eagles, intending to give one to each grandchild upon their college graduation. The first one was gifted last Dec. I still hold all the dimes and quarters in addition to about 300 oz. face value of numismatically valuable coins from well before 1920. they'll all go to my son and daughter, probably before I pass on so they can enjoy them as I have. Sad part, his candy store was broken into back then and 4 cigar boxes filled with indian head pennies were stolen. Based on my estimates each box probably contained at least 2,000 indian heads.......UGH...what they'd be worth today.

Yup..., constitutional dimes are great fractional. As you do, and say, it's always best to price it at all your local LCS's. I've also bought just a few dimes at a time. My favorite constitutional is the dimes. Hands down since I can purchase them in such small dollar amounts. I routinely see purchases of under 30 dimes at a time (just like me) and the shops run out of dimes first. Also, I routinely see only the dimes being purchased (just like me). The mercurys disappear quickly around here.

Favorite constitutional silver. Washington quarters and '64 Kennedy's/Franklin halves. My reasoning behind this is if we ever became a bartering system where silver regained its valuable roll. I also believe the cost of goods would go up due to the changes in society say from the 50's 60's time frame. Population has grown and i'm betting less independent food production exist and its gone primarily corporate America. So if a silver dime bought you a loaf of bread in 1950, I'm betting a Washington quarter or perhaps a Washington and a dime would be the cost of that same loaf of bread in 2024, in theory.

I don't think we have to have a TEOTWAWKI to go into a local bartering system. For instance, food scarcities or liquor scarcities. I like dimes, but I also like 6 oz bottles of Whiskey, and do buy the plastic, but keep larger glass bottles to pour into bc expect return customers to come in for refills.

I've been a big fan of 90%, especially dimes, since I started stacking in 2008. For those concerned with barter, here's something to think about. If a silver dime is just a little more than you need to trade for something, the 35% war nickel may come in handy. It has roughly 1/18 oz. silver versus the dime's 1/14 oz.

Well said Mike. I was going to bring that up. Two years ago, I bought 16,000 war nickels for just over spot. We will have a learning curve to deal with in a barter scenario but the price was right and I was buying for weight.

I always carry a assortment of 90% silver coins when out and about. No much a couple of troy ozs. worth. Its fun to barter worth more and more people are understanding its value in the commerce world. The look on their faces is worth it. They always say do you have more. My response I will see again with a smile and thumbs up.

I cannot go into a coin shop and walk out empty handed. I buy something even if I just walked in to look. A lot of times I would buy the dimes because they were relatively cheap. You do have to be careful if you get really worn dimes because they lose some weight. Since I started doing this I have wound up buying 8 rolls of dimes lol. I generally buy the American Silver Eagles when the premium isn't too high. I have bought some pre 64 Washington quarters. I guess they would be good for barter to make a small purchase or make change.
