A Call for Decolonization: Southern Cameroons - Ambazonia The United Nations must urgently address the decolonization of Southern Cameroons - Ambazonia. The ongoing crisis, marked by widespread violence and oppression under President Paul Biya's regime, has claimed the lives of over 45,000 Ambazonians. Thousands more have been tortured, imprisoned, or have disappeared. The UN's inaction has left many accusing it of complicity in this humanitarian catastrophe. Immediate intervention is necessary to ensure the region's full independence as originally intended by prior UN resolutions, not through annexation by La République du Cameroun. True independence for Southern Cameroons cannot be achieved by merging with another nation, especially one with deep colonial ties to France. The UN must honor its previous commitment, which recognized Southern Cameroons' right to full sovereignty. The attempt to force assimilation into a French-dominated state disregards the will of the people and defies international law. This unresolved colonial legacy, perpetuated with French support, has been rejected both in the past and present. The decolonization process must be completed in accordance with UN mandates. Key international stakeholders-Britain, Germany, and the United States-cannot continue to ignore the fraudulent occupation of Southern Cameroons by La République du Cameroun. For over 60 years, Southern Cameroons have endured systemic plunder and repression. Since 2017, the violence has escalated, with the Bataillon d'Intervention Rapide (BIR) spearheading brutal campaigns against civilians. The UN’s silence amid these atrocities undermines its own principles of human rights and justice. There is no legal foundation for the claimed union between Southern Cameroons and La République du Cameroun. No treaty was ever signed or deposited with the UN formalizing such a union, rendering the ongoing occupation illegal under international law. Southern Cameroons remain a distinct entity that must be recognized and liberated from this fraudulent arrangement. The UN has a duty to rectify this historical injustice and end the suffering inflicted on the Ambazonian people. The urgency for action is clear: the UN must decolonize Southern Cameroons immediately, putting an end to President Biya’s campaign of violence and dismantling the illusion of a non-existent union. The time for justice is now, and the world is watching.
