Ive done Storyboards and the thumbnails were an essential.step in the storyboard process..we used Permanent AD Markers back then with a PenTel for detail and the secret was to draw well.and quickly enough to pencil, ink and then color the sketch so you could quickly re-cover the marker with the cap. They were alcohol based and pricey back in 1978! If you left the cap.off the marker pen for an hour, the pen was dried out and wasted. I learned how to apply them like a pro!

This is really going to help me do better paintings! I never fully realized how important a shadow pattern is-I would just dive in and try to paint all the leaves on a tree.

Thanks Patricia, It really does help to simplify the subject with a shadow pattern.

This is very good advice Phil. This past summer I did a lot of pen and ink sketching which is very helpful. I tend to try to rush into a painting without really taking the time to do multiple drawings as thumbnails like you talk about here. It really is important to take the time to do this. Thanks for this information. Your videos are always great, love your work. Look forward to them.

Thank you for posting this video. I love drawing but seem to skip doing thumbnails because I want to get painting. Eric Sloane is another artist that emphasized doing thumbnails to work out value and composition.

One of my favorite artists. Would like to see more of his work and technique rather than showing the work of others.

Value study is so important! Time well spent, but I seem to forget to do it quite often?

I don't use black, ultramarine blue and burnt sienna create a dark that is dark enough.
