I remember back when I was 8 years old, I had an eMac, and I tried and tired to get Snow Leopard installed. Little did I know that Snow Leopard was architecturally incompatible with PPC (I thought Apple just locked it out so I would buy a new mac). This video would have saved me so much time back then.

@@ActionRetro Imho, Snow Leopard for PPC didn't make much sense, which is why Apple ultimately scrapped it. I haven't had the chance to play around with the PPC SL beta yet, but I believe there are hardly any differences compared to Leopard, for a PPC system (except for the black menus), especially performance-wise. That's because most of SL's innovations were under-the-hood optimisations or Intel-related features. For example, I remember Grand Central Dispatch, of which no PowerPC machines, except for multi-core G5s could've taken advantage of (and even then, one could argue it would be pointless as the PPC architecture had been abandoned). Same goes for OpenCL and so on. And if you add that SL increased the RAM requirements to 1 GB, well... I'd say about 80%, if not more, of the PPC Macs didn't meet the requirements (any Mac, even the last Power Mac G5, shipped with 512 MB RAM at most, and not many paid to raise that to 1 or 2 GB). The impossible cat would've been an upgrade which offered little to nothing new for a few select machines, that is fully-upgraded G4 and G5 machines. That's probably the main reason, even more than boosting Intel Macs sales.

Well, the first attempt with Mac OS X 10.4.11 failed. Also I could not activate the image with Tiger. So I took my 10.5 DVD and recover the image from there. As for the system: You can clearly see that it is a beta. In some views in the Finder, the text for the pictograms is missing and the speed is rather slow. In any case, no comparison to Tiger on the same G5 or 10.6.8 on my Mac Pro 3.1, but maybe there's someone who still tinkers with it.

Apple should've totally released snow leopard for the powerpc products. Originally they planned for 10.5 leopard to work on g3 macs but they dropped support because they just couldn't handle it. Apple should've done something similar with snow leopard. They should've made the minimum requirement be like a 1 ghz g4 processor and have support for all g5 processors.
@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree
@onkelebert7874 жыл бұрын
I don't see it that way. Sure, it would have been great for the fans (and I'm talking about fans, not normal or professional users), but what software that requires 10.6 would still run reasonably well on a G4? For example, even on my G5, garageband only runs acceptable if the partition is on a striped raid volume or SSD. Also, you only have a maximum of 2 gigabytes of Ram on a G4. A G5 can handle more memory and has at least SATA-1, but it consumes a lot of power and gets very hot. Here the end was simply reached, which you could already see from the fact that the variants from 2.5 GHz on required water cooling and the 3 GHz variant never appeared. Please do not misunderstand. I also like my old G3, G4 and G5 Macs, but for once Apple did everything right here.
@Krzrrazrrokr4 жыл бұрын
Onkel Ebert the way I'm looking at it is whenever snow leopard came out in 2009 you had g4 macs from 2006 that couldn't run the latest operating system. So whoever owned a 3 year old emac or ibook or even a powermac g5 already had an out of date computer at that point.
@onkelebert7874 жыл бұрын
@@Krzrrazrrokr That is correct and also bitter, but the G4 was already hopelessly outdated in 2006. Well, it was even outdatet in 2003. Or why did Apple "have to" release versions with dual CPU's? Certainly not because a G4 was fast enough. The G4 was only continued later because the G5 was not suitable for use in a laptop or Mac mini.

Other than the 'wtf' factor, what other reason would there be for this? What software supports 10.6 but not 10.5.8?
@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, it's 100% about the cool factor. However, a few people have said in the various threads that a later version of Xcode is available, and that the later version of Safari that's included makes a difference. To my eye, it does seem to run a bit smoother than Leopard too. If I can get WiFi working, I might keep 10.6 as my couch-browsing laptop.
@RedHairdo4 жыл бұрын
WindowShade X 5.0.7, if that counts. There may be more. Also, libre software targeting Snow Leo+ can now be recompiled from source as PPC binaries and, perhaps, work on this. So I say it's 90~95% for the cool factor.

So I'm trying this on my TiBook G4 1GHz, but I only have one partition on my hard drive. So, I booted from a Tiger DVD that I have and opened Disk Utility. I inserted a flash drive into the USB port with the .dmg file on it and mounted it - that all went just fine. Now I'm on the step where it's copying blocks. It just says Copying... at the bottom right, and it's been that way for 3 hours. No progress bar or anything displaying. Should I just let it be for awhile? I realize it may take awhile since it's USB 1.1, but I was just wondering how long I should let it sit before giving up and trying a different way...maybe with an external SCSI hard drive hosting the .dmg file or something like that.

Wait, can you put graphics/wifi KEXTs from Leopard's S/L/E or L/E into Snow Leopard's? The Kexts are very similar between the two. I should try that!

If you're trying to resize your existing partitions to make a new partition, you need at least Leopard to be able to do that.

Does anyone know where in the macrumors forum they fixed the wifi issues? If not, does anyone know how to fix it?
@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
As far as I could tell, I don't think they ever really fixed it yet unfortunately. I think people were using third party WiFi cards and USB adapters to get around the built in ones that don't work in the beta.

There is a fix that works for some models, like the iBook G4. We’re still working on fixes but the WikiPost on the first page of the thread has been reorganised for those wishing to follow along and help us with testing.

I wonder why the Macrumours guys are using beta 190 when beta 222 is out.. surely later is better? archive.org/details/10a222 DL links also

As far as I understand, they are working on that version as well but have not been successful in getting it to fully boot on PPC. With each successive beta, more and more drivers are intel-only. For example, WiFi works on the first beta, but not the second one even though both now boot on PPC.
