The Impossible Expectations of Silver Surfer

Ok sir. I can’t believe I’m about to give a critique of your gameplay, but consider this feedback. I’ve been a surfer player since my maxed out 6* and I use my r3 7* in all content including Bgs. There is a problem with your rotation. To get the most out of him you don’t want to use the sp1 at all! You also want to focus on the fury first. Your heavies are what get you his buffs which allow for much more control of his phase to get openings and no issues of being dependent on the opponent’s AI. You second buff doesn’t matter between power gain and armor. The goal is to get to the sp2 asap…you can even use the precision from a dex to get your third buff and launch that beautiful unblockable sp2. Surfer is a nuke. After that sp2, it usually takes me a combo or two and the Bg match is done. He slays the tech class and trouble fights like KM. Definitely a staple of my Bags deck and respectfully it’s not the champ that was born to fail, it was the lack of understanding of his “rotation”. (No sp1s!!)

Super valid point. I think regardless of the short fight loop, he’s not quite what he could have been in terms of design. Even as a fan, I stand by that. I always appreciate feedback though, and this was insightful 😄

I have to disagree on the ‘No sp1s’… I am a long time owner of a 7* R3 SurfGod aswell and all it takes is one SP1 to gain 2 furies instantly, then one SP2. If the fights longer then two SP1’s and then a SP2. The heavy only gives you 1 fury. It’s faster to throw the SP1 then 2 heavies with the last being after the cool-down.

@ i think you are making my point. I win fights with just one sp2 and no sp1s. Far faster. Surfer is about how many different buffs he has, not about stacking them. The sp1 slows him down and his heavy phase is his main way to create easy openings.

@@TheCurt451 I get you, but having 2 furies from an SP1 adds more damage than 1 fury from a heavy. I personally never need to use his phase mechanic for opening. 2 furies & maybe 2 CPR buffs are well enough to do the job very quickly… two furies and an SP2 slumps the defender without the need of more unique buffs for me. Either way, both playstyles obviously work very well for us so to each their own.

The fact that Doom came out the month before Surfer took the hype for him to unrealistic level. Also his kit being base of timing as well as special rotation made him difficult compared to the other popular champs (NF, Sunspot, CMM) at the time.

Had 7* R3 Surfer for ages now and he reduced potency of Shock, Incinerate and Coldsnap but 100%, basically immune to it, but because he isn’t actually immune, he can heal with willpower whilst these debuffs are on him… & even better, these debuffs class as buffs for him and increase his overall damage a lot. You basically welcome any of these debuffs as it makes him stronger. He isn’t AI reliant because you don’t have to land his Heavy or SP1 to get the buffs you want. You can wiff your heavy and wiff or throw your SP1 into the defenders block and all his abilities still apply. You can play Surfer slow or fast. The only things that counter Surfer’s playstyle is if the defender has over 100% debuff potency, if they’re immune to Armour Break or if they remove buffs. He works against most champions. I use him for nearly all content in the game, he isn’t the fastest or a top 5 cosmic, but he’s super reliable and fun to use imo. Like MSD said, he’s a very good above-average damage attacker as a 7* R3 high sig with solid utility. He’s nothing more than this though.

Most of the famous and iconic champions are trash because they were added in the early stages… It really sucks. Sometimes I even wonder what doctor doom would have been if he was added a few months later.

I understand. They make sand man, one of the most known and iconic villains a noodle that has some decent utility. But they make dust who is a complete nobody, a hard hitting great utility champion.

if he wasn't already in the 7* pool, I would have loved to see him get revamped for this year's banquet event. I really like his design and playstyle (easy ramp for good increased damage, hell yeah!) but he lacks just about anything else. seeing more damage and/or utility (especially with one of the poster children of Marvel comics) would be nice, and I do hope he gets that.

His kit should have Precision as well and gain some energy while under coldsnap/shock/incinerate. When dupped, he also should have extra duration for his buffs and half the energy damage when hitting enemy block.

This is how he should have been released. 1 power rade should go up just like Hyperion, dr strange. 2 he should have been immune to cold snap, incenerate and he should be bleed immune. 3 get his damage to stupid level. He should go toe to toe with the Hulk. Armer break on every heavy hit. If this was the case when he came out he would have been KING!

All you need is odin pre fights and heimdall synergies for fury and precision. Just dont let your buffs expire. Use heavies as and when required. Use all types of specials. Dex before specials and use them when opponent charges their dash to gain extra precision damage. The phase buff also helps in this situation

@ why would you deal less damage? You get more damage overall this way, since you already have a fury while you wait for the buff to reset. And when you would have thrown an sp1 instead you continue building up to an sp2.

Probably 🤔 But I thought “less buffs = less burst damage” so I thought it would deal a bit less damage. Sorry, I don’t use silver surfer so I don’t know so much about him. If you use silver surfer and you found out that is the better way how to use him, that is amazing! I’ll try it out too!

I gotta say I totally disagree with how you're thinking. People WANT to like silver surfer and sandman, but their kits are just not fun to use. People give silver surfer and sandman an extra look and they still hate them. But if they had moon dragons kit, they would be considered good characters. Silver surfer has close to no utility and has AI reliance. Your examples of massive damage for Kate and CGR all have way more utility than surfer.

Whiffing an attack is the easiest way to get your heavy punished by new AI. And debuff potency reduction is hardly utility in comparison to anything else useful. He's better in a few node set: hazard shift or energy adoption, but thats it and other champs take it just as good as him. He also has a specific playstyle and his buffs are on a short timer which you have to perform specific actions to refresh. His utility is minimal and his roation can be clunky or straight up unfun. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts though! I just dont agree that there is much usefulness to his utility but you do have valid points.

@@edwardlawson9219 I actually don’t have any of the issues with Surfer that you mentioned here. It’s very easy to perform his play style and it rarely ever gets intervened with. I use him for nearly everything. Plus, I don’t wiff heavies 95% of the time but it’s great that his heavy and SP1 attack abilities trigger if you do wiff. It can be useful.
