I think you mean state-funded and independent schools, because in the UK private and public school essentially means the same thing - fee-paying. Also, there are such things as scholarships to certain institutions. Independent schools have the freedom to teach their own curriculum rather than adhere to a government-prescribed one, so for some they are a better option. I know several people who are not wealthy who go to private schools, for many reasons.

Correct. However, I think that the show may appeal to the upper class moreso, since they can relate to these characters. I have been to both private and non-private schools, and I can definitely say that this would appeal to privately educated pupils more (proportionally). Pupils from private schools are more likely to be intelligent than those who aren't. Think about it - a better school=a more intelligent pupil.

It all depends on whether you believe that intellect is nurtured or natural. Personally, I feel we are completely moulded by our surroundings and thus that social class affects intellect. The world isn't fair, but the reality is that people with money (ON AVERAGE) will get more opportunities to broaden their intellect.

but thats more to do with cultural capital (books, internet etc.) than actual social class, yes those with parents of a professional background will have more opportunities given to them to learn, that doesnt mean they will take or prosper from them and theres nothing stopping those of less wealthy backgrounds from broadening their own outlook. yes its very hard 2 do that when youre 3 years old and developing, but id say its more 2 do with individual parents.

Exams to get into non-independant schools are usually non-existant unless it is a grammar school. On the other hand, pupils who go to private schools must already have a certain degree of intelligence in order to pass the entrance exam. Also, if your parents are wealthy enough to send you to a private school, they are more likely to be intelligent. These intelligent "genes" usually get passed down to the children, through a combination of intrinsic intelligence, and learning from experience.

This is obviously not applicable to everyone - exceptions always exist - private school wasters and, conversely, uneducated Alan Sugars. That said, the figures speak for themselves - people from private schools achieve at a higher level than their state counterparts and manage to reach greater heights. Look at Parliament - nearly 80% were in private secondary education... The world isn't fair - we just have to fight harder!
