Although he isn't widely known in the western world, May I mention Seiji Yokoyama? He is mostly known as the composer for Saint Seiya OST. I wish you guys can check out his work. Songs like "Inside a dream" o "Heated Saints" are worth listen to

The train scene from Spirited Away is so moving especially with the music reinforcing the sorrow the main character is feeling. It's the first time she's had to just stop and has nothing to distract her from everything that's happened.

I think you are missing mentioning the MELODY. That is a big plus whenever a Hisaishi piece is played. His melodies are memorable with all the interesting key changes or remarkable inversions.

It's the gateway to anime because the real music is the friends we make along the way. Seriously, Studio Ghibli knows the right amount of heartstrings to pull. They prove how powerful music can be. And that's on top of the beauty of Ghibli's animation. A perfect balance

Joe Hisaishi.. honestly creates these masterpieces of music, some of them I think can be on a level like Beethoven’s work, or Mozart. Ghibli has always had put talent and hard work into everything, and it can reflect on there works of films. Sixth Station is my favourite Joe Hisaishi piece. I wanna play it on my funeral

I’m so glad you did A Town with an Ocean View. One of my favorite songs from Joe Hisaishi! As many others said, would love another one of these or focusing on one of the other Ghibli films you haven’t covered! There’s something so special and emotional about Joe Hisaishi’s work.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail I was thinking "I hope he listens to The Legend Of Ashitaka" It's phenomenal! Certainly my favourite piece of music from any Ghibli film. You'll hear the same themes all throughout Joe Hisaishi's work. It's pretty romantic at it's core imo.

If you haven't already, I'd greatly enjoy your take on some Ryuichi Sakamoto pieces; he was a great inspiration to Ghibli composer Joe Hisashi and is a preeminent example of western style music with a distinctly Japanese inflection. Maybe. I'm not musically trained, but I'm a big fan of Sakamoto and love these videos

Ahhhh I loved this!!!! でも惜しい!!! I wish Charles was familiar with the story a little for Kiki's! Its about Kiki, a young witch, who only knows how to fly, flying off to find a town to 'settle' in. So that base upward motion (flying off) that lands (settles) on the 5th is sooo relevant to the narrative!!

I would say Studio Ghibli is responsible for creating a lot of the anime sound we are familiar with today and also setting the bar for how good animated food looks. Please do a part 2 of their works this is great!

Maj7#4 (or #11 but I mostly see it replacing the 3rd, not extending on it in these cases) is used so frequently, from what I can tell, because it is a nearly complete chord of the In Sen scale-one of the two main Japanese pentatonic scales-of its 7th. For example, Fmaj7#4 has all the notes of an In Sen scale starting on E, excluding only D.

I think the opening theme of Nausicaa is one of Hisaishi’s most underrated pieces. That string section that comes in toward the end is so powerful.

I wish this episode was twice as long.. A Town With An Ocean View and Bygone Days are 2 of my favorite pieces from Joe Hisaishi, so to hear them both in 1 episode is just great 🤗 Btw, the audio clips used seem to be from the Budokan Studio Ghibli 25 Years Concert (from 2008). It's easy to find on KZbin, it's awesome. Just the opening suite from Nausicaa is already worth it.

If you like Ghibli and you also like jazz, Platina Jazz is definitely your go-to band, they make amazing jazz versions of Ghibli movie themes and they're amazing. Give them a listen if you are interested, they have a few albums

I'm sure somebody has mentioned Yoko Kanno. My favorite anime soundtrack of all time and one of my favorite albums period is the Macross Plus soundtrack. So many different kinds of music on that from orchestral, to jazz, to electronic, to a bunch of others, but they are all so good.

Please look into the Monogatari Soundtrack. It's got it all. Jazz, Pop, Flamenco, Rock, etc. It would be cool if you could go over some of the Openings too, like Perfect Slumbers. The ending song for Season 1 is nuts too. "Kimo no Shiranai Monogatari" or "The Story You'll Never Know".

Watching jazz musicians marvel at simple inversions never fails to entertain. For the record, the chord with its 3rd in the bass is called a 6 chord, or sextacord. If the 5th is in the bass, it's a 64 chord or quartsextacord. As in, C-E-G is a C5 chord, E-G-C is a C6 chord, and G-C-E is a C64.

Hey Charles! I'd love to see you take a look at Bernard Herrmann's score for Vertigo. Especially with the piece 'Scene D'amour', Herrmann creates a dreamy, haunting and romantic atmosphere. Would probably need a spoiler warning first though!

I gasped when you started to play One Summer’s Day BY ACCIDENT! We love to see it! It’s super cool how Joe Hisaishi made both songs in the same key but with completely different feels. Where One Summer’s Day feels almost whimsical and mysterious while Bygone Days is more jazzy. Hisaishi is truly a master at his craft.

Fun fact about Kiki's Delivery Service; the city of Koriko in which the movie is set is primarily based on the swedish cities of Stockholm and Visby. Very beautiful cities (no bias whatsoever because I'm from Stockholm)

I always love how enthusiastic you are about good chord progressions. Although I don't fully understand the technicalities of what's happening in some music, I get a lot of the same feelings unconsciously. Especially from Joe Hisaishi and Studio Ghibli
