For such a strong beautiful intelligent resourceful resilient woman who was also Super Mom, it's an absolute tragedy. Taken (?) from her family and culture, dumped by first husband, misled by employer, abused by the Knight guy that she was nursing and keeping alive 👹, not getting paid, ripped off and besmerched by the expedition organiser - my heart bleeds. I hope that she had some happiness with her sons and second husband. That is so sad 😔 Inspirational woman. Bless her Spirit. Good wishes to you and followers Worldwide Xxx 🙏🏼 ❤️ 🍀 🗺️ 🏴

What a fascinating and heartfelt story about Ada Blackjack and so appropriate that you would show it on Mother's Day. Not to be mean but you must live in a very privileged place to say "how many could survive like that , oh we are spoiled" No maa'm you must forget that there are other countries than the US or EU. My parents are from 2 different countries in Africa and I have seen worse than this story since the day I was born, including my parent's story and mine. My mom would go work physical jobs under the scorching Egyptian sun, shoeless , and carry more than twice her own weight in bricks, my mom is an extremely petite woman due to malnourishment. she would have to slowly climb very narrow unstable wooden rails to bring them to the workers who made the buildings, if one brick falls, she would be penalized, and have been beaten so many times by the contractors. I'll leave out the constant sexual harassment. I was 7, my youngest brother attached to my back with rags, and I would go to the giant open dumpsters to hunt for recyclables while wearing plastic flip flops. I have been bitten by Scorpios, my feet were stabbed by broken glass so many times, my poor 6 month old brother cooking under 140 degrees with nothing to protect him but meager pieces of clothes that we put together. We would eat once a day, often skip our only meal. Sometimes, My mom had nothing to give us when we were crying because our stomachs ached so much because of the lack of food, and she had to lie and pretend to go get something to eat, and would wait hidden until we fell asleep. she would cry to the point of loosing consciousness and people would have to carry her in our shack. She couldn't bare to hear her kids pleas for food. .. When she knew she had nothing to give them. she already went to the dumpsters, the market that tosses uneatable food and vegetables (which was our main source of food) wasn't there everyday, especially during hollidays... her last resort was to steal vegetables displayed outside, but the shopkeepers would shoo her away because of her rags and surely because they knew why she was there for. She would walk miles and miles and miles from shop keepers to the next to see if someone didn't drop an apple, some bread, anything. She was too proud to beg, even if it took blisters and bloody feet she would stay 6 hours outside after work to pick the maximum of food. Nice butchers will give her chicken skin and stuff like that. Sometimes nice shopkeepers would give her older stocks of vegetables or fruits. We had to carry water on our head and walk 15 minutes without dropping anything, and a bucket was our toilets . This wasn't in the 1950. This was in 1996 . Today I speak 8 languages fluently and I humbly think that I have good enough bases in English, I have my medical degree that I acquired in one of the highest ranked uni in the world, thanks to thr scholarship I won and my mom fought for. And I have the immense honor to be serving Médecins sans frontières aka Doctors without borders to give other kids back some of the luck I had. Materially we had nothing, but my mothers love makes me feel to this day that I had the most AMAZING childhood. Apart illnesses due to malnourishment, I carry nothing negative from my childhood. My mom is 62 now and in extremely bad health, and after a life of abuse , violence that started in her childhood, sexual assaults, vexations, racism, she still works hard to GIVE to others just like she did when we had nothing. She would still share the meager food she cooked with a neighbor, someone sleeping in our street. etc. I beg her to finally rest but she refuses, she want to help until her last day on earth, so less people have to go through what we and million of people like us have to go through, everyday. I have never ever ever heard her complain once, she never cried on her misfortune, only for us her kids, and for others who were in the same boat as us. She always says that she is the luckiest woman and mom, and her "little trying times" (like she calls them) were for something greater than her, and she thanks God everyday for them, and being still alive. A little peek into my life story to make you think. This isn't over, people's sufferings are far from over. if this story broke your heart, know that this happens EVERYDAY, and 100000 times worse, so you might want to drop some canned foods to your local food bank, or wire 10 bucks to action against hunger. If you are financially challenged, know that you can give your time to a lot of people who need to learn how to read, learn a trade, get some love they never received. Don't look down on those "illegal alliens" help them, those are the doctors, the teachers, fireman, nurses and humanitarians of tomorrow. My team is composed of 70% of kids who were like me. Black and brown kids born into places that were ransacked, used and abused and left into an calculated chaos. If you want and like our gold, coffee, cacao beans and resources, you should like our kids too ;) (I say "you" as in anybody who would read this message but hate immigrants and kids who try to survive and thrive) People still die of hunger in 2020 and this shouldn't be. Peace and blessings

Noice and Stefansson are definitely the ‘villains’ of Ada’s story. But closer examination reveals some interesting nuances. Noice was, mostly, a huge admirer of Ada. He wrote a long and detailed series of newspaper articles in which he details her ordeal, criticises the expedition for being woefully amateurish, and practically hero-worships Ada. The fact that Noice commercialised the story annoyed Stefansson hugely - he felt that Noice was treading on ground that he himself owned. Meanwhile Noice, who must have had some massive weakness of character, decided he could make some more newspaper money by turning against Ada and accusing her of practically murdering Lorne Knight. This about-turn is hard to believe, when you compare the two stories both printed under Noice’s name. Stefansson, in turn, had his ‘go’ at Ada’s story in his book ‘The Adventure of Wrangel Island’ (a curious title). In this book, he is actually highly complementary of Ada, and treats her pretty fairly. Unfortunately, off the page he was less kind, and did relatively little to help the poor woman who had been left emotionally devastated by the ‘adventure’ that Stefansson had thrown her into.

There is a show here in the U.S. called Mysteries at the Museum that recently dramatized the story of Ada Blackjack. The show highlights items in the collections of museums to tell stories about those items or people connected to them. In this case, it was Ada's "pocket-calendar" (her expedition diary) which is in the rare book collection of the Dartmouth University Library in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Their version of Ada's story is mostly like this video, but they did choose have a more triumphal tone, so they left out Stefansson's ill-treatment of Ada after her return.
