I grew up with the late night sound of my father playing his 1945 Martin D-18. He used a pick to strum but it was late at night and I would soon be off to sleep. So after playing a violin and piano I decided to learn to play the guitar. Suddenly guitars were in the hit parade and were cool. So the summer of 1954 I spent all my free time learning how to play a flat top guitar during a summer job as a dishwasher for a summer camp. By the ending the summer I could play a few songs finger picking. I soon gave up the violin and piano and for the rest of my life the guitar was the center of my music passion. Now 70 years later I have around 10 Martin guitars that I play, one at a time, at art shows and live cafés here in South Korea. Now could I have done that with a violin? My Martin guitars range in age from early 1880s to my 2001 D-45 and 2016 D-1 Authentic. My dad’s D-18 is now with the 4th generation in our family. Thank you Mr Martin for making these wonderful guitars!
