It can't be classed as a War of independance purely because of the following facts - A united India did not exist at that time in political, cultural, or ethnic terms The vast majority of the Sepoys who mutinied had up to that point been quite happy drawing British pay to fight and kill fellow Indians. 80% of the Army used to crush the mutiny was Indian Many of the local rulers fought amongst themselves rather than the British. A number of revolts occured in areas not controlled by the British.

Its a war for independence for one simple fact. Indian aristocracy elected an Emperor of India and they fought for independence. They failed and were all executed and Queen of England crowned Empress of India.

True there was total anarchy from 1740s - 1850s. Mughal empire was in its dying throes. One ruler attacking this next door fiefdom. The stage was set for the British And they exploited India to its core. In the mid 1600s, when the British first set up their trading post in Madras - the Taj Mahal was being built. At that time, India had one of the highest GDPs in the world and when they left, it had one of the lowest. The British absolutely robbed India to its core. True, they built railways and the Indian army and the judiciary, but it was not for altruistic reasons. Irrigation infrastructure was not a high priority for the British in India. So by the time they left India the population had increased and famines in India were common. The British gave India its “Indianness”, and without this patriotic fervour Gandhi and others could not have pressured Brits for independence. British got kicked out of the USA because of the will of the people, and then out of India because of WW2. In 1942, the British had promised Independence to India if the Indian leaders agreed to helping the Brits in ww2. Without this, “us versus British” patriotism India today may have looked a lot like Africa a bunch of 12-24 different countries - Rajasthan, Bengal, Punjab, Hyderabad, you get the picture. Not the “Union of India” as it is officially called today. Much love to all from the USA.

If what British did was so admirable and honorable then why does your education system devoids your children with it's history?? It's such a shame that even after all these years instead of acknowledging the wrong that you people did you are defending the barbarism of your ancestors. British owe a great deal of reparations to India. Our problem is that we forgive and forget very easy.

The hatred against the British was caused by the several brutal massacres committed earlier by the British against Indians that's why revenge killing was conducted against British citizens the idea was that "When these whites didn't care and had mercy for the deaths of our families why should we give mercy to them" and still then several leaders tried to not involve the citizens but the more radical rebels disagreed and killed somewhere about a hundred to 300 British civilians in retaliation of these killing the Brit's immediately massacred more than 10M Indians in the aftermath directly

Whatever happened was terrible and this should never have happened...but look at it from another perspective...if u take your family to a stranger's house, stay there indefinitely, although tidy up a little here and there but pocketing all of their riches in the meanwhile and start commanding them and rule them....then the homeowners lose their patience and start attacking you and your family...now before blaming them u should know that you are the one who put yourself and your family in danger in the first place!!!

I agree that the title should be changed but i dont agree with the reasons you gave. You see the causes of this rebellion was a deep desire to drive out the British from their homeland. This feeling is always described as a War of independence rather than Mutiny. I would understand if the brits of that time called it mutiny but now that history has been studied from a "thiid party" perspective, both sides should be taken into consideration

The Well of the Bibighar is still there in Nana Rao Park, Kanpur. The bones of the 210 women and children murdered, dismembered and cast; the dead with the dying into that Well on the 16th July 1857, are still there and undisturbed. I have travelled to this Well twice in the last 3 years from New Zealand; as among those 210 women and children, are my Great, Great Grandmother, her younger sister and their combined 8 children. It has been said that there were more visitors to this sacred Memorial during the 19th Century, than there were to the Taj Mahal. Sadly, there is now only a circle of brownish concrete where the Gothic Memorial once stood and nothing to mark the resting place of our dear Women and Children who suffered as much, or even more than the Christ. Sati Chaura Massacre Ghart, is pretty much as it was on the 27th June 1857 and Wheelers Entrenchment about 1 kilometre south east of Bibighar, still holds much of the intrigue of June 1857, including the old water Well near the centre, that stood between the 2 barracks. It is still there, very much as it must have looked at the end of the siege. The other Well just south of Wheelers Entrenchment is alongside the Military Barracks on Cambridge Road and is also a sepulchural Well, containing over 300 plus of those killed at Wheelers Entrenchment between June 6th and June 25th. This quite large Memorial Well is off limits to any visitor, especially if you are British; with access strictly denied by the Indian Military. Believe me, I have tried so hard, but even Ravi Kant Chopra; the senior Minister for the Indian Military, has ignored all requests to date. All Souls Memorial Church though, is on the northern perimeter of the 4 acre Entrenchment and is so worth a visit. You would be warmly welcomed here I am sure. But might I suggest a very well written book by Andrew Ward, titled "Our Bones are Scattered'. It is 'the' historic authority on what took place in Cawnpore and is thoroughly dedicated to the true story of the Cawnpore Garrison during June and July of 1857. Any one wanting more detail on this incredible piece of history and to do with Cawnpore or Lucknow, I can be contacted at mark@gafelk.co.nz

+Dipesh Satam To anyone of consequence, it is always written as Cawnpore and will remain so for countless generations to come. "REMEMBER CAWNPORE" An indelible cry that echoed around the world in the ears every civilised living human being. Even today there is 'The Cawnpore Club' - the private retreat of wealthy Indian's in the heart of Cawnpore. They know, and relish to be in the shadow and sight of the Bura Sahib's who were Men of old, fearless Warriors of honour and integrity, to be feared.Yet Cawnpore still dwells in a shadow; but not that of men. See here now Maratha, for it was at the mouth of your Nana, your blood, that a solemn oath was sworn on Mother Ganga; to protect and see repatriated, the remnant of those British at Wheelers Entrenchment; that they would be delivered safely to Allahabad. And it was at the word of that one, that treachery and murder was plotted aforethought, and against those who were in his hand, to do what was good for them. Those Indian eye witnesses who saw what took place there at Sati Chaura Massacre Ghart, said that Ganga was impossible to look upon; being bright crimson with the blood of over 500 innocents murdered, most all of whom were women and children and who all now hold a glory beyond anything this world could offer.And so to this day, there is a residual and terrible curse upon Cawnpore that began on the 27th June 1857 and is unmistakable, for anyone open to that reality. The suicides, poverty, religious riots, family upheaval, famine, drought, the terrible heat of summer, floods and unexplained tragedy's, are all a consequence of that betrayal and the slaughter of those innocents, who were powerless and in the hand of that Maratha, your so called Peshwar of Utter Pradesh that you are proud to be associated with. And so Mother Ganga still flows past Cawnpore as she always has, but her face is covered and she looks away in horror at what was done in her name. And until the original Memorials to those slain are reinstated and hallowed like those in Turkey, France and other places of conflict, nothing will change for Cawnpore. Blood always commands its price Maratha.
@gtanj

+Mark Probett : The Maratha General Nana Sahib forbade killing women and children as per Indian tradition (though over the past few centuries, it had been violated by many invaders including Europeans). Tatya Tope was totally loyal to him and a man of good character. The Maratha women went on a hunger strike hearing things regarding hurting captives, which may explain the prevalent culture. It is not easy to determine who actually ordered this kind of execution. This was a coalition of factions where most soldiers would refuse to touch women and children. It could have been a mischief maker with an agenda to do something horrendous or an idiot in a drunken stupor ordering. Whatever it was, the outcome must have left Nana Sahib and Tope aghast as this kind of an act is completely against their ethos.

I'm pretty neutral here, I am neither anti european nor pro. It was a revolution and violence was to be expected from both sides. Obviously if you colonize a place, the people there won't like it and they will respond with violence. Also obviously, even powerful empires are made out of people who can feel pain and sadness and will not like having to feel those either. It's simply humans, with clashing interests, having to take the direst measures in the worst circumstances. It will continue to happen too.

The fat thing was just a rumour . It was not an indian tradition to burn widows but rather it was a tradition of some Hindus. Other religions and many hindus did not indulge in this practisce . There were 500 cases of Sati in a year . A widow in most cases remarried, was forced to be chaste and wear only white clothes .

Sometimes I wonder if the "massacre" was fabricated by the British in order to justify a violent and inhuman repression against the Indian mutiny. Have anyone ever tried to exhume the bones, identify the remains and send it back for proper funeral in England?

If you consider this a massacre and inhumane then may I regard to the aftermath of the mutiny and other atrocities by the britishers against Indians as genocide. Public execution of mutineers, forceful annexation of indian land through doctrine of lapse, unimaginably high taxes which literally caused a famine and starved millions, incidents like jallian wala bagh (over 50,000 indians including women and children shot at for gathering peacefully to celebrate a festival). These are just some examples, the full picture is tough to even comprehend. The kingdoms before the british rule were not perfect or civil, yes, but the were minding their own business. British invaders used the strategy of divide and rule to conquer and form british india. There is barely any proof of this incident and was made to fill the british troops with hate to conduct the slaughter that followed the mutiny.
