The "Indonesia" Hidden In Suriname 🇮🇩🇸🇷 (

Suriname, a country like no other. In the 1800's, the Dutch were looking for labor to replace the slaves they brought from Africa. This led to a contract program that brought over thousands of Indonesians from the island of Java. These "Javanese-Surinamese" would go on to have a big impact on the country's culture and food. Being that their arrival in South America was such a unique situation, I wanted to learn a bit more about their history.
I decided to best way to do this was by visiting a fun food market, and then an abandoned plantation where a bloody uprising had occurred. A typical Sunday afternoon, you could say.

It's been fun, Suriname! What an interesting little country you have. There was definitely more to see and do, but that'll have to wait until next time. It's a miracle this video got posted--I had a problem with some memory cards that led to me losing some footage. Thankfully nothing that ruins it, but there was a really nice elderly Javanese guy in Tamanredjo who sat me down and taught me some of the Javanese language. Shoutout to that guy, sadly that's all I can give. I also know that the sound quality for many of the Guyana/Suriname videos hasn't been the best--I figured out the problem afterward, so videos after this should be fine. Anyway, onwards, amigos and rafikis.

I’m Dutch and I literally grew up with Indonesian food, you have no idea how our cuisine is influenced by Indonesia. You can find it all over the Netherlands and Suriname. Rendang, resolles, nasi, you name it.

There's some interesting indo dishes that take a influences from outside Javanese cuisine, or provide a snapshot of "older" Javanese cuisine tho. Like with daging rujak. I talk to contemporary Indonesians, they can only place rujak as a salad. In indo culture it's a beef or pork stew tho. Sweet and spicy, so good, stewed in coconut milk, lomboks and palm sugar.

In Surinam we also have your Soato Ajam only over there we just call it Saoto. The stock is the same but we do have different condiments that we put in. It's one of the most popular soups of Surinam. A couple of years ago a went an vacationon to Bali and the herbs and taste of the foods are similar with the taste of some of the Javanese/Surinamese food. We also have adopted your peanut sauce. Hier we call it peanut sambal, sate saus and also peanut sauce. Revisiting Indonesia (Asia) is high on my to do list. I had an amazing time on Bali and Gilli Trawanga

They were not sent... the hindus and javenese got paid for their work and were free people. Many of them also returned to java. This is why their history and modernday culture is different than the creoles in surinam.

I am 100% Dutch. My father remarried two times, from his second wife (Indian Surinamese) I have a sister, his third wife (Javanese) I have one sister and a stepsister who is Javanese-Creole. In Holland you can find many restaurants serving the same food as in Suriname. And because Indonesia was another colony of us we also have a lot of Indonesian restaurants, my favorite dish is Beef Rendang. You should try it out whenever you go to an Indonesian or Malaysian restaurant. P.S. your Dutch sounds really understandable. And I am always happy to see you release a new video, so keep on making them.

And I also have two children by different women from Asia. My son is half Thai and my daughter half Filipino. I guess mixing races in programmed into my DNA. Another fun fact about Holland is that Papua New Guinea was part of the Dutch Indies. My grandfather worked there as a carpenter building some villages for local tribes. So, considering the DNA me and my father have, there might be some uncles and or aunts living as hunters in the mountains.

As a Javanese Indonesian, its really fascinating to see this. My late Grandmother have told me stories about her cousin who was Javanese Surinamese and that they came over to Indonesia in the early 2000s to visit. I was too young to remember back then but if i ever have the chance, would love to visit and find my long lost relatives "Nggo dulur2 ku sing ning Suriname, mugo mugo diparingi sehat lan becik urip e karo gusti" Javanese people will understand the above 😉

@@JT-tb9ri poor David🤔. Polyglot, multi-lingual or just smart about learning languages. Sabbital is a 9.8 out of 10 in learning languages. I lived 11 years in Suriname and learned Dutch and Sranang Tongo. I could barely speak to my two farm workers in their languages, one Javanese and the other Maroon (Saramacan). We spoke Sranang Tongo to each other but the moment we seperated, I spoke English to my Surinamese wife (her english is better than my Dutch, plus we met in English speaking Guyana so it came more natural), and they went home and spoke javaanse and saramacaanse at home. I never tried to learn their language and am now sorry I did not. Also, I lived in Switzerland (St Gall canton), where Romansh language is native. Going to an international school that taught in English, I cannot remember any of the language eccept for: "E Stange bitte" (a big glass of beer). I am not sure that was Romansh or not because I used it all over the country and was always happy to get my drink.

Nice video, appreciated the historical aspect. I've lived on The island of Java for 8 years (from America). Javanese people come from the central part of the island. Indonesia is very multi-cultural within itself. So many different tribes and ethnic groups and languages. You should totally come here! Lots of fascinating things to see and learn. I was born in Suriname (live in Holland now), my grandfather was from Central-Java and migrated to Suriname in the 1930's. My parents and siblings were born in Mariënburg and my father and brothers worked in de sugarcane factory from the 1950's through the 1970's. During my childhood I spent the weekends and school holidays in Mariënburg, it was a fun place then.

Here in suriname there is no such thing as sunnis or shia's however there a difference between the Javanese muslims ,some pray facing the east(facing the Qibla as all Muslims should pray)or some pray facing the west. About being veiled there may not be alot who are veiled from those who pray to the west but there are alot who are veiled that pray to the east as they follow the 'right' Islam, I agree that it isn't forced upon anyone but I will say that it is highly encouraged. there are alot of Muslims that are hijabi's and like you said it isn't forced, you have those who don't wear it permanently but still wear it on some occasions or like now in ramadan.

Goodmorning my friend... nice to see you are exploring the different culture here in Suriname. Lapis base ingredient are rice flour, tapioca, coconutmilk, sugar and essence. The drink is called Dawet and this is made with coconutmilk, essence sugar and lemongrass. But the taste of every vender is different, so you have to try which taste suite you the best according to the base ingredient of the food or drink. In South Africa we also have similar history of indentured labourers from Asia who were brought in by the English to work in sugar plantations. That's why South Africa has largest Indian society outside India who are based around Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province. In the Cape we have descendents of Malays, Indonesians, etc. who were brought in by the Dutch in the 1600s who worked for the Dutch East Indian Company. They formed a refreshment station at the tip of Africa in the Cape, and most Dutch and their Asian workers settled there and never left. They now speak a Dutch dialect called Afrikaans (which directly translate to African language). Thanks Tommy for this video, it shows that the Dutch touched many continents.

Javanese from Suriname here , ofcourse Java progress better than Suriname and far more better Suriname is not even close to java's economy , Suriname economy has been shit since 2014 with alot of debt , corruptions and shit politicians etc... my dream is to visit Indonesia where im actually from and maybe living there if thats possible lol because i think it would be really cool to go back home and never forget my culture and where I'm originally from

Another good video! My wife and I took a flight out of Belize in a small commuter plane that fit one other couple, I was glad we were the the last to board because the first couple were stuffed in the back. The plane did have air conditioning if you consider a small oscillating fan that had a hard time going from side to side as air conditioning. After a while we landed on a small island with a dirt runway when we went to get out we were told not your stop and the other couple got out, the pilot looked left and right for anything coming and we’re soon back up in the air to our island. Our runway was interesting as we landed you could see the buildings at the end of the runway that were we approaching kind of fast with widening eyes, when we left days later we took off in the same direction we landed and look liked we barely cleared the roofs of those buildings, it’s things like these that leave you with lasting memories and laughs.

Here is a thing. Probably 3 years ago, my friend Become a liason in a cultural event, called "Java diaspora", organized by my university. One of those attendant was, an old Suriname doctor. He shared a story in his journey from Jakarta, when he sit side by side with a Javanese student, from quite renowned university in Indonesia. This doctor tried to speak with him, IN JAVANESE, because, you know, that student literally comes from Java, and live in Java, and the student said he cannot speak Javanese. WHICH IS QUITE COMMON HERE. lol. Then both ended up, talk to each other for more than 6 hours in English. And this Suriname doctor gave a little slap in the end of his lecture saying.. "we tried so hard, protecting our ancestral tradition in faraway land, but those who live in this land, just doesn't care about it. Culture, never disappear, people just forget and neglected them"

There is a saying “wong jowo ilang jowone.”. It is pretty common among Javanese who lives in Jakarta since Jakarta is the capita. We meet so many people with different background, a melting pot. Also this is happen among the youth gen. In Central Java/Jogja/East Java most of them can speak Javanese since they meet another Javanese on their daily basis.

The Javanese in Suriname when they came as contract workers had a very hard time. Much of what was promised by the Dutch was literally not fulfilled! But today, although they know that their ancestors came from Indonesia, they are proud Surinamese and they are hard-working people who have arranged their own affairs.

I used to work in Borneo for a little while, and the people are just like the people you met in Suriname. One thing I did notice about the Indonesians is that they always had a smile on their face. It didn't matter if they were in the city or in a small village. I was in Balikpapin.
