First-time UniFi purchaser and recent channel subscriber here. I went with the UDM base model, 2 nano APs, and this Switch Lite 16 PoE. I’m really satisfied by the hardware. I have it hidden away in somewhat of a network closet. No money for a rack yet. But the software is really where they missed the mark for what I believe Pro-sumers want. I was looking for more control over my network compared to consumer brands like Netgear, and UniFi seemed like a good option. But I quickly found myself opening 15 tabs at once to troubleshoot connection and adoption issues, and after a few DAYS of research, found out that the most recent firmware had a bug that prevented the UDM from seeing the Switch Lite 16 PoE. And the issue was well documented on their forums for over 4 months. So there I was installing firmware after 4 days of troubleshooting an issue that was only discoverable on their forums when I had bought the hardware from their website, not even a 3rd party. I guess I expected at least a warning that the firmware the product shipped with would render the product unusable by the controller out of the box. Anyway. It just soured my excitement for a product called “The Dream Machine” and now I’m forced to run beta software on my home and work-from-home network. If they’ve pivoted into selling direct to consumer, then they should have expected the need to scale their support and QA before shipping the firmware. Hardware is *chef’s kiss*

The smaller sister product with 8 ports (of which 4 are POE) has a 52W POE budget (13W/port avg). This 16 port model has double the POE ports (8) and a lower 45W POE budget (5.5W/port avg). I think there is a reasonable risk the power budget could be exceeded. My current POE cameras are ~8W each. A 6 Lite AP is 13.5W. A UAP-AC-IW is 7.5W (19W with POE pass through used). I realize these are max draws and nominal would be lower, but it adds up fast. It's handy to have the 16 ports but seems oddly under-powered. Also, the power supply is internal and may not be easily replaced if it fails. My Edgerouter X power block failed and was easily replaced in minutes. This looks nice for sure but make sure it will really work for you. For $20 more you can get two 8 Lite switches with more POE power and external power blocks.

In our company'(60 employees) we choose Unifi because we can manage the network our self, i literally log into the controller once a month. The investment for the equipment also was extremely low maby 5K EU. I think this is the area where Unifi shines: Low investment, Low(NO) operational cost. And this all because it just works withouth ever really thinking about it. I would use this switch as a trow under the desk/ceiling switch. We have a 16 unifi 8 port switches under desks and i think this would simplify things a bit since it provides double the ports. If you need a more industrial high wattage POE switch go for their rack mounted POE switches. I think this is a great addition especially for business where there was an obvious gap beteween the 5-8 switched and the 16-24-48 rack mount solutions.

Agree with this. Most PoE cameras are less than 10 watts. IP Phones tend to be similar, and Access Points tend to be under 15Watt. In a home situation, 3 cameras and an access point would work well and if you have more PoE access points, I guess you go for a slightly higher power switch or get two of these :).

I purchased the 8-port version direct from Ubiquity recently and I really like it. Same power budget, 4 PoE ports, HALF the price of the 16-port. Powers a UAP-AC-HD with no issues, and still has a enough power budget left over for the rest of my equipment. Doers not get nearly as hot as the older 8-port PoE models.

I just bought an 8 port 150 watt. I have 3, 24 volt PoE cameras. I wanted one switch that would handle my 2 unifi APs with 48V and cameras with 24V. I was worried I wasted my money until I saw the product page saying it's 48V only. Great video and I'll remember this product or any friends and family I deploy unifi for.

$199 is a bit high compared to the many similar choices, but as a solution is ok. They all use similar, off the shelf components, so quality and durability should be similar. But if you married their brand/solution, you have to pay extra for it.

Considering the overall prices in the UniFi lineup, if that's your ecosystem, I can see a nice niche for this switch. 45w is not a lot of POE power, but UniFi cameras are pretty frugal with their power (under 5w each for many). Add a couple of APs (9w ea), a CloudKey G2+ (13w), a couple of G3 Flex (4w ea), and a G3 Micro (3.5w) and you're at the max power (9+9+13+4+4+3.5=42.5w)... but that's a pretty nice little setup. Sure, you could go with the 8 port 150w version instead and have lots of power to spare, but you'll run out of ports for your non-POE equipment pretty fast. You could also go with two of the 8 port 60w switches, that's only $20 more and gives lots more power, but it's also two switches instead of one (and you lose a port on each linking the two). So there are lots of options depending on what your needs are.

I just got the UniFi Switch 24 POE last week. I love it so far. I think the switch reviewed here would have been a contender if I had known about it, but probably still would have gone with the one I purchased and received last week. I have 3 AP Lites at my house and a work IP phone that requires POE, and I'm planning on setting up a Zoneminder video surveillance system. I bought a couple POE cameras to play with and they work well on it. I also prefer to hardwire what I can with cat 6 instead of WiFi. So the 24 port was best choice for me. I have my Unifi Controller on an AWS Linux instance and I run my house and 2 of my daughters apartments with an EdgeRouterX and Unifi AP at each of those. I have 6 Unifi APs setup for my church for the past 4 years. So I'm running 4 sites on my controller. I really value Tom's reviews of these products. I was looking at getting the USG for my own home firewall, but he's sold me on the PfSense solution. I'm currently using a Linksys WRT1900AC with the radios turned off as my firewall at home, but I'm wanting to replace it.Thanks, Tom. I always give a like on your videos!

I have had this switch for ~ 4 months. While it "works" as a switch, and the price is good, it does not perform well within the Unifi eco system. This switch continues to alert in the controller console as disconnected, it is not disconnected as I do not loose connectivity to the Internet. What I do observe is high load (>4) and CPU (99 to 100%).

I set up my home network with a cloudkey, usg, and 3 AP Pros, but when it came time for the switch I cheaped out and went with TP Link due to the number of devices that required POE and my desired budget. I have about 16 devices that require POE plus another 6 or so non POE, so I just got two 16 port gigabit poe switches for about 400 total. The question is am I really missing out on very much functionality by not running unifi switches? In hindsight, I should have just spent the extra $80x2 and went unifi but now that's not an option without tossing my original investment.

The mounting options looks like it might be sketchy for side-mount or under-table mounts, etc. For a "home" office or "home" lab enthusiast, this type of mounting (under table/desk, or on the side of something under a table/desk) seems like it would be commonplace.

I have several Unifi switches in my home, the central ones are rack mounted, the small distributed ones generally sit behind a piece of furniture. If one wants to under mount it, that could easily be done with a minor amount of creativity.

Nice, but as others have stated, they just miss the mark here: 1. power budget is a bit low even for a "lite" 16 port poe switch. Should have at least 60-80w power budget. The 8 port switch has similar/same budget? 2. price point is a bit high. ~$100 is perfect for the 8 port switch, ~$150 would be the right price for this 16 port.

I've been watching this one for a while and agree they overshot on the price. $149 seem about right. At $200, it's a harder choice. If 12 ports were POE with a little bigger power budget, then $200 would be justified.

TP Link has a POE managed switch for $133 (at Amazon) that's fairly comparable to this UniFi one but offers more POE power (110w) for less money. At that point it depends on whether the extra POE power is actually needed, and whether it's worth the extra $66 for the switch to be managed in the UniFi ecosystem, or separately.

If you really want to separate traffic for security reasons, you can't have a flat network. I has to be separated by subnetting and/or vlans. How do you determine how much power is required? I'm new to Unifi and want to setup 5 G4-Bullet cameras and 3 AP nano HDs.
@compudude
@compudude 3 жыл бұрын
The UniFi website has power consumption specs for all of their cameras and gear. The G4 bullet cameras use 4w, per their specs, so 5 of them would use 20w, and the NanoHD APs use 10.5w ea, so 3 would be 30.5. So unfortunately you're a little over the output this switch can handle. You could use a pair of the 8 port 60w models (costs $19 more) and have power to spare, although you lose two (non-POE) ports linking the two switches.

@compudude

@@rollover36 It's borderline, for sure. MIGHT be ok, although high draw at startup might be an issue if there's a power outage, and then everything is starting up at the same time when the power comes back. If he doesn't mind futzing after any power shutdowns (reattaching devices one at a time so power draw stabilizes before adding the next one), and being a little risky, it could work out. Personally, if I know I'm going into a borderline situation that could cause problems, I'd look for something that fits the specs I need now, if I'm buying new hardware. If I inherited it, I'd be more willing to "make it work". But buying under-speced hardware, brand new? *shrug*

UniFi products all support at least 48V 802.11af or 52V 802.11at (active) PoE nowadays, which is NOT the same as the passive 24V and 48/52V PoE used by most of their non-UniFi products still. You need to do your research and read the datasheets. It should be noted that 802.3af/at/bt are standard... UniFi switches will absolutely power non-UniFi equipment if they follow that standard. Passive PoE was never standardized, and while much of it is interoperable if you have the right voltage, it is by no means a guarantee, and definitely won't work with downstream devices built for active PoE (exceptions being later-production UAP-AC-Lite, UAP-AC-LR and Gen3 cameras which support both active and passive PoE). With passive PoE, there is no handshake negotiation protocol to protect downstream devices from getting the juice if they're not built for it.. if you enable passive PoE and plug in a lower-power or an unpowered device, chances are it's a goner. Plugging active PoE device into enabled passive PoE port *usually* does nothing, but could release the smoke. Plugging in a passive PoE device to an active PoE switch is safe, it just won't work. It should also be noted that the first generations of UniFi PoE switches support both active and passive PoE on ALL ports, a feature I miss.

IIRC Ubiquiti sells an adapter that will let their switches power passive POE devices. Sucks that you need one, but I'm glad there's an option, at least. And it makes sense why it's needed. Different POE switches offer compatibility for different specs. Passive POE simply isn't on the list.

I had so much hope for those Flex Minis, they were basically exactly the product I've been wanting them to make for years now but they're just too compromised. No spanning tree, no custom port profiles, no management VLAN, no SNMP. I won't even use that in my home network. I have only a couple sites I manage where they might be useful without having to rework things so I don't need custom profiles or management VLAN. I can live without SNMP and STP (they'd be access switches connected to an upstream router or distro switch, and hopefully just won't get looped).

I'm no ubnt hater, the USW Flex mini and UDM are awesome value for money inexpensive products for what they offer but this is just unjustifiable. I'll stick with the Aruba switch! Wish I had never got my 48 port "managed somewhere else" piece of crap Unifi switch. That's what I get for watching KZbin videos that say this thing is great! But never mention that in order for it to work you have to setup some BS controller on a dedicated VM or Machine. Not you Tom! You are always honest with your presentations... At least the Aruba 1930 series allows both on board, one stop, configuration and centralized configuration if you want that. I don't need to dedicated a server to manage one switch and two WAPs... Any body want to buy a switch? Oh and the controller software just sucks! It is not user friendly at all...
@Zeric1
@Zeric1 3 жыл бұрын
If you didn't know about the controller requirement, you didn't do your research. Unifi is a proprietary ecosystem, people that buy into it are generally using all or nearly all unifi equipment and want a single "pane of glass interface to manage all their devices. It is not a good choice for those that like to mix and match vendors. My home network has 10 network infrastructure devices (APs/switches), and having a single place to manage them all makes things a lot easier than trying to login to each on separately. As one scales up even more, trying to individually manage devices becomes very unwieldy.

@@Zeric1 I take full responsibility for my hasty purchase but that doesn't stop me from voicing my opinion on the idea of "must be centrally controlled" BS. I made the mistake of assuming that it would be both managed on the device and the option to centrally manage all the devices. The controller software is NOT intuitive, it is not user friendly, and the layout basically sucks! My opinion. I won't spend any more time on this piece of crap so make an offer. I'm going with the Aruba 1930 series switches. But I am glad that it works well for most people and understand the desire to centrally manage, I just think they could have offered both. One last thought, as someone who use to work as a DoD contractor (still do part time), I don't see any UniFi equipment in any of the facilities that I have worked in. Doesn't mean that it's not there but I've never seen a DoD supporting company asking for Unifi equipment experience in their job listings. So if your home network uses nothing but UniFi how are you ever going to get any experience with Juniper or Cisco, etc.? Just sayin that the only reason I would have 10 plus network infrastructure devices (and I do) is because I am researching/learning to work with various devices from different vendors that I need to support.
@Zeric1
@Zeric1 3 жыл бұрын
@@tommajor2940 Unifi would not make any sense for the enterprise level, it just doesn't have good enough support. Residential and SMB can be a good fit, but not most enterprise situations that need top shelf level support. I would have been quite surprised if you had seen Unifi in any DOD facilities. Just like it's very unlikely you will find brand new Cisco equipment in a residential environment. Sure some people buy used Cisco gear for their home, but I've never heard of anyone buying the latest Cisco gear for residential along with a support contract. Different gear for different markets. The Unifi controller is different (you get used it), more importantly is that it's more limited than enterprise offerings, but again it's not targeted for that space. For me Unifi is a good balance between features and cost, are there other good options as well. People like Unifi for home and SMB because you get the "single pane of glass" controller, without having an expensive on-going maintenance contract for software and firmware updates.

@@Zeric1 Everything you just wrote basically proves my point. You don't need a controller for one or two switches and a couple of WAPs which is probably enough for most small businesses or the home if that is UniFi's target market.
