This Jaguar XK120 was once the fastest production car in the world. This 1954 example has been in the Wile family for decades and boy does it sound incredible. I'm honored to have been trusted to drive this car. It was quite intimidating. Once you hear the first little crunch of the gearbox shifting into first it really keeps you on your toes to be delicate and deliberate. The 4 wheel brakes are quite timid to slow this vehicle so while its fun to ring out the twin cam 3.4L inline 6, you'd better be sure there's nothing in your way! Driving classics like this Jag really make you appreciate the talented drivers who raced them.

Please don't blip the throttle changing up , changing down blip it if you must if its not a synchromesh transmission , I passed my bus test on an old crashbox ( non synchromesh transmission ) and had to double de clutch and blip it between gears on the down shift , its an art matching the revs to the road speed.

I'm 69 and now one of my one vivid teenage memories is when my late Aunt Jean arrived in our driveway one spring in 1963 at the wheel of her silver 1952 drophead XK120. Possibly the coolest thing and boldest entrance I have ever experienced. For 3 consecutive years she drove that Jag cross country from her home in New Mexico to her cottage in Port Stanley Ontario on Lake Erie. My brothers and I went nuts. It was the coolest looking and sounding thing we had ever seen or heard. It had Borrani wire wheels and the lead knockoff wheel mallet in the trunk. It also had a small dash plaque attesting that a racing version of it had set a lap record at Lemans. I was too young to drive but she let me hit the start button and rev it and showed me how to slip the clutch to get it moving. Smelled of leather and oil. She took me on my birthday in it to the Stratford Festival theater for my first Shakespearean play. It was really all about the 2 hour trip in the Jag with the top down. Another year she made the trip from New Mexico with my cousin and a large dog packed into it. She and that car were a perfect match. Miss them both.

That’s a great story. Grew up in Stratford and attended many plays at the theatre there. I moved away when I went to college never returning for very long. Years later it went into disuse as no more Shakespearean plays as no actors. A few years ago bums got into it and started a fire. It burned to the ground. Treasure those memories! Stratford really goofed up not protecting and re-using it. The car is wonderful especially in its original condition, a real driver. Jay Leno would be proud!

My late uncle, Don Callarman of Downey, CA, had this car. When I was 15, back in the early 70s, my brother Seth and I flew out to stay with Don and his family, and he gave my brother and me the "job" of basically polishing every part on the car and helping him install a radiator hose. I remember the DOHC in-line 6 with polished aluminum...everything. And Abarth exhausts, which have a phenomenal sound. On the day before we left, we got ONE short ride in the car, down the boulevard, VROOOOOOOOM!, before it blew out the hose and Don U-turned and headed for home. A car like that can change your life, if you're a teenaged future "car guy." It put the demon in my blood. I'm still chasing that sound!

I was a kid when these Jags were in the hands of kids of people who could afford to buy Corvettes, T-Birds and Jaguars at slightly more than a normal sedan. My friend and Neighbor had a XK-150 and would regularly race late '50 Corvettes or triple nickel T-Birds. The Jag would always lose off the line but once it was in 2nd gear, it was Bye Bye American Pie.

My first car was a 1957 XK-140MC (210 hp. version). At the age of 17 I had to build it myself, as it was in 100's of pieces when I bought it for $250. Never worked on any car before, but the prev. owner gave me the factory shop manual with the car. I studied that manual for about a month before I started working on it. Valve job (by hand), wiring, etc. Drove that car daily for about 10 years, and took many incredible road trips in it. Best, most exciting car I've ever owned, and that is saying a lot considering past E-types, XK-8, XJ-R's, XJ-6's, Mk. VIII, '63 Stingray, etc. 55 years later, I still miss that car. The sound in this video is what really got me, and stirred so many memories.

There's something to be said for the Jags, Astons, and even Triumphs of the day with the straight 6s. The sound from that XK is glorious, this is definitely a video that has made my day. Everything on this car is simple, analog. It brings you back to a time when cars were simpler. When these cars were new, England's first motorways weren't opened until almost 5 years later. Imagine this motoring down narrower roads than what you were on in this? As a car guy I'm envious of all of these cars that you are able to drive & show us, but I'm thankful that I'm able to "see" them through your eyes & ears. Again thank you for this video & keep up the great work!

My old Healey sounded almost this good...of course, the engine in that car was a straight six, making around 124hp...The engine itself was not nearly as complex as that Jag DOHC engine...I remember that the XKE models offered somewhere between 220 and 265 hp, in their engine upgrades as the years rolled by...Amazingly, there was, for a short period of time, a "Rootes Works" Healey that was totally upgraded, tweaked to a racing vehicle-type of car, that generated 250hp--a lot for a Healey!..There is a video on KZbin that shows a driver named Canfield, blasting through the field at SPA, in a vintage car race...It is an almost frightening thing to watch, as the guy pushed that Healey to its limit, passing XKE, 911s, other Healeys, etc. Really something to watch.

The sound is very much as I remember, tho it has been awhile. I drove a 1953 Jag XK120M as a daily driver when I was a teenager in the 1950's. Going through the gears both up and down was effortless and an unconscious act. Crunches occurred but were uncommon. Sometimes I double-clutched but usually did not. Going down, the transmission called for a lot of heel-toe work to blip up the rpm's and one satisfaction was hitting the sweet spot to slip down into the next gear. It a routine procedure but the outcome wasn't guaranteed. I loved the description here of the drum brakes as a suggestion but of course the '50's were long before disks and abs and the braking seemed fine. I have watched a lot of these Jaguar 120 videos and yours captures best the sense I remember of driving this remarkable car, especially its sound. More than 60 years later, having driven and owned a lot of other very fine cars, maybe only one has come close to the tactile excitement of the 120 and that is the current Alpha Romeo Giullia Quadrofoglio. I would still prefer to go back to what I had when I was a very lucky kid.

I'd just passed my driving test in 1992 and a friend sat me in the driving seat of his XK120 and asked me to drive him somewhere. I had to learn that gearbox quickly..

my dad just picked up a ‘59 mk II and it is absolutely phenomenal. it has the same engine as the xj120, but its 2.5L inline6 so its the smaller engine. but damn does that thing sound good.

I love that oldscool sound!! My dad does restorations of classic Triumphs, TR3, TR4 and TR250. I don't fit in a TR3 with standard steering wheel and they are mostly 4 cil. So i'll take the TR250 to events and boy that 2.5L inline 6 screams when you rev it!! At the end of the day my jaw hurts from smiling! hehe :)

I always had trouble with finding my favorites of various categories. I can appreciate a lot of very different things for what they bring and each is nice in its own way, etc. That said, I can’t help feeling that the Jag XK is likely the most beautiful car in history.

A wonderfull roar that leaves no misunderstanding that this is a serious sportscar ! Even though you don't redline it , it builds up speed verry quick with the ease that big torcky sixes posess . It's a Jaaaag ! 😁😁😁

The beauty of old cars is they feel and look fast even at modest speeds. PS you blip on downshifts but not up in my admittedly ancient experience of driving old manual gearboxes.
@TedwardDrives

Missed the point. Gearbox was unhappy and slow to enter gear. Revs drop to idle immediately so I’m raising the revs. Leaning on the gear and letting it slip in when it meshes. Notice that it worked and never grinds.

@@TedwardDrives Thanks for the response. Maybe guilty of reminiscing but when I drove dodgy boxes 50 odd years ago they just couldn’t change quickly even when fairly new. Upshifts I often move pause in neutral and then move into the higher gear and the loss revs was okay as they wold be lower in the higher gear so no need to blip. On changing down the rpm would obviously need to be higher hence the “blip” to equalize the revs and minimize the crunch. We called this double de-clutching. However, each gearbox is different and needy in its own way!

Agree! Once, I even had to drive a car where the clutch cable had snapped so all changes were double de-no-clutching!

Bit of a tip for anyone dealing with a gearbox like this with a dodgy syncro. At the end when he stopped, waited to try and get 1st gear but it still crunched, if he would've come to a stop, then put it in neutral, then clutch in and out fully twice, and then tried for 1st, it almost certainly would've gone in smoothly.

The duel overhead camshaft 6 with Hemi heads was a great engine for Jag. It came in several displacements 3.4/3.8 and mine in 4.2L. I added 20" Cherry Bombs and the sound is amazing.

The coupe style was always my favorite Jaguar. Missed out on buying an XK150 coupe in the early sixties, got scared off on cost of rebuilding the transmission. Never actually driven one but don't remember it being so archaic. I guess the XK150 was more updated.

I bought a 1953 XK120 in 1972. It was in bad shape but the mechanics, the wood and, the body was all there and in decent condition including the original spoked wheels.. Holes in the floor boards and the leather was a disaster. Ran great. I loved that car but, just couldn't justify the expense with a baby on the way. Had to get rid of it after just a year.
